Ok, a bit of a play on words but it does sound pretty cool...:D

I started a thread which has a great deal of cynicism in it now and thought I would redress the balance with a positive thread. I once overheard a student saying that they had 'found' tS7 on a torrent site and could easily download it for free. As this was when I was actively producing icons for Caligari, I told them "if you don't pay for it I don't get paid!" There is a certain correlation there with yesterdays news and if we look to a bright future here it is easy to speculate on just how it can affect each of us.

Give me a moment and humour me here, who knows some of this might actually happen;

1. Microsoft love my icons so much they ask me to work for them on further variations of the UI.

2. They move into learning as part of virtual earthSpace and ask me to act as an educational advisor.

3. They decide to add a fantasy realm to the virtual earth and buy all of my Buddy World assets for an extortionate amount of money.

4. This then extends into a range of digital media; e-books, games and movies...I become very rich.

5. MS hand pick existing tS users to work on content for new ventures using the new software.

6. They commission artwork for promotional material for the new earthSpace.

7. They realise I just coined a great product name and pay me a fortune to get it off me...;)

8. The possibilities are almost endless here and that is before you envisage how this might affect your own personal ventures.

I am genuinely excited about this. Oh, and I realise all the above may be no more than wishful thinking but then, you never know.......

Let's keep this particular thread positive for the sake of tS user moral and visitors.

Well, the best people to build materials for this new venture are the users Splinters. Seriously.

Say, how's the Guiness? :D

I think those 8 items sound Far more promising than playing the lottery! And those 1 arm bandits too! (This time it's going to be different! ) :D

I do think, this means, Market Penetration. Google Earth... VirtualEarth... this sounds like Alien vs. Predator. Let's hope the outcome's better though... with a better profit margin... :D

Nothing like some good ol competition to inspire creativity and teamwork. I'm all for it. Got the Gloves on and everything.

I remember when Mosaic was a web browser. A couple years later I started hearing about web designers. They seemed to love their jobs. I believe this is another of those situations. This time I'm not missing the boat.

And a pepe pig on every virtual street corner (and not the porn one someone spotted!)

Pepe movies in each virtual cinema.

PMA= Positive Mental Attitude. Keep it up guys!

As for the Guiness, I dumped that in favour of a good whiskey but after the second bottle it is all a blur.............Zzzzzzzzz

I especially like #5, but doubt that anyone will ever notice or contact me.
Good luck on #7, proving it was your idea and gaining monitarily from it will be quite a challange.

Good call Splinters! FWIW I believe #3 "3. They decide to add a fantasy realm to the virtual earth and buy all of my Buddy World assets for an extortionate amount of money." is a total total certainty! Well the bit about fantasy realms.

I suspect someone - maybe not MS themselves - will by a virtual earth platform from MS (thus helping Bill G to feed more starving African children) and market this alternative virtual earth. For a small fee (of course) you could open "Splinters Wonderful 3D Emporium" and sell your Buddy World Assets etc, for the aforementioned extortionate amount of money.

3d is not going to go away anytime soon. Right now many of the biggest selling movies are 3d and fantasy movies - this translates across to TV, advertising and of course, the Internet.

I may not have the details right but the principle is sound. A Virtual Earth is at the basic level just code - which means you can copy and paste it, and change the copy to suit yourself.

You wisely mention PMA but I find it difficult NOT to be positive. Recent studies in the US show that the use of National Parks, Hiking, and other outdoor activities has dropped by up to 25% - where are the people going instead? The Internet and the Xbox - 3d environments requiring 3d content.

Lastly I like your 'earthSpace' trade name but I'm thinking 'trueEarth' also has merits!:D

Great stuff Splitters, I agree give it some time and soon they will be calling you. I see this transition from another perspective. For the last 13 years or so years I have been an GIS Analyst Developer/ Data Manager. I deal with terabytes of imagery DRG's, DEM's, Satellite, LIDAR, IFSAR. Just in the past few years in GIS the trend has been to create a virtual model of the real world for analysis like "Environmental cleanup" to "Dynamic Global warming models". I have also as a hobby enjoyed 3D modeling. Now what you guys do is simply amazing to me. But now for the first time I might be able to tie two things that I love to do together. GIS Analysis and dynamic real time modeling. So I, like Frootee and so many others in here; is jumping on the wagon where ever it takes us. I know I am not an Artist, but it is cool to be able to do any type of 3D modeling at all, hell if I can do it anyone can....lol. That is why I love this forum, you guys are so talented and yet the average Joe, like me can chat with you all and learn from the BEST. Bravo to you all!!!!!!Don't ever loose the vision, no matter what hits you on the face.....:D

I think as well the future is so bright, WE all need to wear SHADES...lol

I love that old song by Dier Straits.. The future is so bright I got to where shades.....

That was Timbuk3 and not Dire Straits :) I do like early Dire Straits myself. Anyway, a little off topic, but music is a big thing for me!

Thanks!

Tom

Timbuc3 - great band. They had some really sharp lyrics as I recall, words that really made you think. Actually that's probably why they're not around anymore!!:D

I hope that doesn't mean that sometime in the future it will be decided that there is no longer a need to keep them. Also note how fat most Americans are as well.

I really started this thread to be a positive antidote to the speculative and cynical stuff elsewhere but I am all for any incentives that get kids (and adults) off their butts and into a healthy lifestyle. I cannot accept or condone a future that makes tools to make staying in and 'virtual lives' easier. It could become the fast food of technology; too tempting and convenient to try an alternative. I would not want to be part of such a future.

Balance in everything. I just paid £500 for a tent the queen would be happy to live in and I am taking my family camping for the first time rather than a trip on a plane to an apartment in the sun. I may get wet and cold but this will be a great experience for my children and us as a family unit. You simply cannot recreate that kind of experience virtually.

I realise no one is suggesting you have to choose one or another but surely we are trying to get kids out more and improving the social skills they have. How many of us have been flamed and insulted on a forum by some experienced expert who could well be a 12 year old with an ASBO?

And now back to the delightfully positive tone of this thread....;)

I am bumping this thread as it is a positive ray of light in a dark place...:D

I just set up workspace to mimic model side as best as I could and, despite a few glitches, was relatively easy to use. I am going to persevere with it and see if I can 'convert' a bit more. Still have some work to do so I will have to slip back to the 'other side' but I plan to mess some more and experiment with dribble this week...:D
