For every dark there is light, for every black a white etc. I am very positive about the future of tS in terms of online and collaborative content and would like to hear similarly positive comments in the 'Microsoft earthSpace' thread.

However, in this thread I would like to discuss tS7.6 and where it might be heading in light of yesterday's news.

Any takers (preferably Caligari or MS employees...)

Oh and a simple "it is still being released soon" and " we are currently looking into version 8" would be all I would need to hear...:D

Ok a quick question which surely deserves an answer as 'children's futures' are involved:

I teach tS in my school (version 4 as it was free on a 3D World magazine) and student's are encouraged to download version 3 for practice.

The able students I recommend get tS 5, 6 or 7 depending on age and budget. A few own the software on my recommendation but I would hate to think they are investing in a program that will cease to offer the tools necessary for my subject.

So, far the sake of the little children ;), can we have some confirmation of tS's short term future as a 3D creation app for product design and visualisation? In layman's terms: will there be a 7.6 or 8? Will Caligari (will it actually be called Caligari?) continue to sell tS 5 etc. or have Microsoft control of all their assets?

Hi splinters. I really do not see why not. I see every reason why truespace will continue. I cannot confirm data of course, but there's nothing in beta forums that says, "testing will now cease" etc. Rather we are simply pushing forward as scheduled.

Thanks Frootee, I am 'sort of' privvy to the beta forums even though I am not active. Hemulin and I talk about the future of tS and I have to have some involvement if I am to make icons for new features. And on that subject, I made quite a lot recently and a few last week. I doubt MS sprang this overnight and Roman would not have requested these if there was no future but I am still curious.

I post here Peter for the benefit of everyone's input even if I already knew the answer. The cables are not cut; I had 3 emails from Tom Grimes last night but he was not able to deny or confirm anything nor would I divulge anything he said in confidence. I wonder if my Cali University space is still available as it was not exactly a 'public place'...

In answer to your question, I do expect an answer and have very faith that I will receive one soon. I may be apprehansive about the future of tS but I am pretty sure that Roman and the Caligari team are as honest and forthcoming as they always have been.

Hi splinters,

Oh and a simple "it is still being released soon" and " we are currently looking into version 8" would be all I would need to hear...:DI can certainly understand concern, and after reading the Caligari/MS thread (which at one time was adding posts quicker than my reading them), everything is basically if/maybe etc.

Even if an update was released (-> 7.6), there would still be a very large question mark as to the future, but then again, the same could be said if there had been no buy out.

From my personal view, yes, I would like to see an official statement as to the future of TS, I would also like to see a release of TS to resolve bugs,... but, all I can do is wait and see.

Regards,

Another important question is the price for 7.6.

This question have grown to be much greater now than it was before MS bought Caligari.

Now, the future of Truespace is uncertain. I don't actually care whatever MS or Caligari says about the future at this point, in my opinion it is uncertain anyhow since we don't know how MS will handle Truespace. MS has no track record at all when it comes to handling Truespace.

With the old Caligari, we always know that there would be an upgrade after the current version and that it would improve on the current version.

Thus, the price wasn't so important since you could view it as a long time investment.

Now, when the future is unclear, the price becomes EXTREMELY important.

Equally though, I would imagine Caligari could offer a more affordable price (if rumours of a substantial 'acquisition' sum were to be believed) as they would no longer need the money so badly to cover development costs. Hell, if tS7.6 was to be the last release of a full fledged 3D app for Caligari you would think they would give it free to tS 7/7.5 owners as thanks for investing in their future when they were a small friendly company and for sticking it out...until now.

A thought just crossed my mind.

A little over a year ago I bought an Alesis Fusion; an incredible machine that, in many ways, was ahead of it's time. It promised an open software system where new features could be added through system software, a sampler, virtual instrument modelling, 24 track hard disk recorder built in and much, much more. It sounded fantastic and cost £1000 but it's nearest rival was the £6000 Korg Oasys and it looked like a dream come true....I bought it.

I started a thread explaining how it could be likened to Caligari and Ts: a small company passionate about it's product standing up against the big boys with something truly unique and cost effective.

http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=811&highlight=fusion

I haven't played with it in a while. Oh, it still sounds great but the promised CD burner was cancelled as was the external HD support. They fixed the last of the 'major' bugs in the last firmware released over a year ago and there have been quite a few units returned as being buggy or faulty.

My point should be obvious and it is chilling to read my closing line in that thread:

With my nice new Sony 19" monitor running TS7 on the desk next to this keyboard I really feel part of a growing media community that is really going somewhere and I check into both of their forums each day to see what is new. I feel both have come a long way and deserve a bright future, and I intend to be there.

I can give no higher recommendation to both of them....

Sad, so very sad....

I use to have an 8-track reel-to-reel but sold it when I got my amiga. Always intended to get into the multi-track on computer but still haven't sorted it after 16 years of messing with computers. What can I say - I'm just a procrastinator. :D

I had an 8 track reel to reel set up too. BTW you can pick up software like Music Creator 4 for just $40 and it does all the midi, direct to disk recording, etc - like everything I had in a whole studio in one inexpensive program! I am sure there are many other similar programs out there, maybe even free, so getting that multitracking set up on computer is pretty easy these days.

TomThere are many programs that will give this ability,... the last I looked at came with the audio card I purchased which had 16 tracks. (although very off topic lol)

Yes Jayr, it is a Fusion 8HD, absolutely pristine condition...hardly used actually. What is your Karma like? I am not familiar with it but I do need multitrack sequencing, multitimbral, effects etc.

It's based on the Korg Triton workstation, with a load of funky other has a load of other funky stuff thrown in. 61 velocity/aftertouch keys, 62 voice polyphony, loads of filters and effects.

The whole thing is sample basedand it has a sequencer built in but no hard drive or sampler, you have to save patterns to floppy disks. Mines upgraded to have 2 extra sound sets, one keyboards one drum loops.

A really cool feature is where you can get it to record a riff, assign it to a key and get that to play one or ill you hit the key to stop it and you can do that with every key on it.

have a look here:

I always liked Korg gear and I am familiar with the Real time pattern play as I owned a Korg N364 before the Fusion. I might have been interested but I would be giving up (effectively) unlimited polyphony and sequence data, well unlimited until you fill up the internal 80gb hard drive. Add to that the 88 note weighted keyboard and sampler, virtual modelling, analogue synthesis etc.

As much as I like Korg I would be foolish to pass that up especially as the Karma is officially disccontinued...the Fusion is not discontinued just not receiving further software upgrades...:o Oh, and I need a full size piano keyboard. I did do my research before buying this and the full blown Oasys was the only other alternative....but £6000!!

Thanks for the offer though.

Hi Splinters and All,

I hope you all are not affected by this, because it involves many aspects, especially The professionals who work with the program.

It is very sad, but we must expect that the Roman / Caligari has to speak.

Is sad to know the Caligari Corp has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft Corporation ...

and will be good NEWS if it was:

The Caligari corp became more strong in 3D than Microsoft

UNFORTUNATELY in nowadays the money and ambition speaks high ....

Monopoly or “Monopólio” is SAD...

SO We await the answers and then look calm.

best to all the community that make a good and honest work

If it's ok to ask, can we get some info on what's happening with TrueSpace 7.6? We haven't had an update in months now and it would be nice to know what's happening.

Hi Paul, are you well?

Development continues on 7.6 as far as I am aware, Beta team are as before and so are dev's...again, as far as I know. I have spoken to several members of the Caligari team, including Roman, and all seem active...but I am not beta so I know little more than anyone else really.

I know no more than that but it is unlikely that you will get an official line until there is an official line and there are probably a lot of legalities to sort out before that can happen. I am not defending Caligari at all but I trust Roman and the team to do the right thing. All we can do is be patient and wait for the news.

We can all still turn out some good work in the meantime. Perhaps you could give my Little Cloud thread a look and give some feedback. You might like it...we continue regardless...:D

Exciting times, the store is closed for refurbishment and I cannot see through the dark sheets in the window...but it opens 'soon' and I can't wait to see what is inside.

Agreed, I am waiting for 7.6 to make the move to workspace (I am hoping for more features and stability) in the meantime I will just dabble in 7.51 workspace (once I complete Little Cloud).

I will just have to use that darn bridge for dribble, nurbs and booleans.

Were Nurbs ever promised for workspace? Are Nurbs somehow not popular anymore? I guess I could live without them as long as we get cloth and fluids.

HA !

Now I cant blieve what I hear here ! YES THEY ARE POPULAR !

If not half assed implemented they are absolutly fantastic !

It all depend on what you have to do !

Booleans with nurbs is absolutly wonderfull while with poly they can be

a nightmare.

It all depends on what people you are talking to ..... this is not a strong

nurbs forum. I am in nurbs forums most of the time (MOi..... Rhino and now

Alias Studio).

So this is just your point of view Paul !

Wait until you check out the Pixar Forum about nurbs...;)

p.s. I did check out Moi but a little expensive at 195.00
It does look nice for working with Nurbs, (since he was the early programmer of Rhino)

Back on the subject, I hope Caligari becomes a better Communicator about Developments once this all gels. If it is like this for now on we might as well have a Clam Bake!
