Thought I'd post a preliminary render of a scene I am working on.. I am aware of some things that need work (the shoe looks too cartoony to me) Any comments and crits welcome...thanks

Hey Chester,

Dunk that shoe in Madmouse's current project and I think you'd be all set. :D

Are you planning to add any additional elements to the scene?

Finding a kid's shoe on a meathook is kinda disturbing.....not sure if that's the meaning or not but that was my first thought. I Like all kinds of art but this one I found uncomfortable. I guess the bright colors on a shoe reminds me of my kid's shoes. Just being honest.
I hope this was not your intent.

Even a serial killer wouldn't let a kid near Madmouse's toilet :) I will definitely think about dirtying it up a bit. As for additional elements, I haven't decided for sure yet..I am going for a lonely abandoned warehouse look.

I'll have to admit that it was exactly my intent! I'm glad you were able to pick up that it is a kid's shoe and I'm also glad it made you uncomfortable (from a successful intent pov not a personal one). It is supposed to be a disturbing image. I have kids too so I'm not glorifying the concept but musing on it.

Madmouse's toilet is rather scary....

Maybe you could add some rusty pipes running along the wall and a shutoff valve down by the water...

Perhaps a ladder attached to the wall too...

Whupps that's just floor isn't it? The shadow gave me the impression of refraction.

Urk! That's creepy! It certainly succeeds at being unsettling. Two comments - it may just be the camera angle but the central hook seems to me to be hanging at slightly the wrong angle - to my eye the curved hooky part of the hook should be slightly to the left.

As far as the shoe goes I think you could easily leave it a little cartoony - this could soften the visceral impact of the image a little by emphasising the 'unrealness' of the image without losing the unsettling impact you are after.

This is ...um.. an interesting peice;)

Silly, indeed...we all have our days.

To me it looks to be a living shoe, looking down as it holds on for dear life.

To remove the "cartoony" look, I think the most useful tactic would be to "be" the shoe...now where's your center of gravity? I'd say towards the back looking at the point where the shoestring is attached to the shoe unless the toe is filled with nickels or something - that's where I see the "looking down" part.

To get rid of the "holding on for dear life" bit, you could either give the shoe a twin and have them attached by string and over the hook...or you could keep just one shoe, but give the string something to get snagged to - maybe the tip of the hook, but as it stands I can't convince myself that the shoe is still hanging there with one and a half wraps around such a smooth surface without falling.

So whatever you're going for, there's my input for what it's worth.

Thanks..those are good points, I'll have to check into this a bit at home (ie how a shoe would hang) . The only part I didn't understand in your post was:

Silly, indeed...we all have our days.

Here's an update with some additional items in the background.

I'm assuming the shoe is what's "missing". I thought it was silly. If it's not the shoe than it's just plain twisted. ;)

Is it meant to be a realistic looking shoe? Try finding a fabric texture to use as a bump map... that may help. Also try blending a dirt texture is a secondary layer. One last thing, the shoe should be tilted slightly to the side... even though it's angle is close to perfect, it seems to be horizontal on the front side. Tilt it a little more away from the lace. The rest of the scene is looking cool though. Though it is a little disturbing, as long as that's the intention I don't see a problem with it.

Good job so far :)

ah ok, gotcha. That's just the "working title" ...supposed to mean a child is missing. I'm thinking of calling it PEDophile. :)

THanks Zeipher...Yeah it is supposed to look real. I did put a bump map on the pink part of the shoe (the purple parts are meant to be more like that rubbery leather they use in kids shoes) but it's not too apparent.....I think I'm mainly having issues with too high luminance at this point which is lending to the cartoon effect...I'm trying to avoid dirtying it up too much because it's kind of representing the only wholesome part of the room. I just held up my daughter's little shoe by one lace and it was perfectly balanced and stayed horizontal, so I will be adjusting that angle for sure.

thanks for the replies so far.

Gotta admit Chester that the bed and blanket makes it quite a bit more disturbing. Solves the problem with the floor looking like water though and helps define the space better.

I think it's the gaffa tape that does it for me!

Full marks for having the bottle to tackle such a subject. A powerful image and thought provoking stuff, as you've already proved.

I like the freakiness of it!

I'd add a teddy bear directly hanging below the sneaker - with the other shoestring wrapped around it's neck. Now that might be disturbing!

Or maybe instead of the teddy bear, a roughed up note that says 'GO HOME' witten in blood with the impression it was wrote using a bloody finger tip (like finger painting).

Ok.....I'm officially channeling Wes Craven a little too much here!

haha I thought about a teddy bear, but that was too poignant..

I think this is the pretty much final version...I may add some DOF...

I'd add a bucket next to the toilet paper roll for added realism. ;)

I'm still not reall sure about the purple on the shoe. Maybe a specular map to scuff it up a bit and break up the uniformly shiny surface?
