Blimey, you can tell I am on vacation with no pressing contracts...

Anyway, I am starting a very ambitious thread for the benefit of those who love CGI movies and maybe haven't seen the 3D World issue 100, top 100 CG movies of all time.

Looking through my collection I have lots of these so I decided to revisit them all in no particular order so I watched the first one with my daughter this evening. In no particular order then:

Number #--: Robots.

Christ, I forgot how good this movie is. I had got it into my head that no-one could touch Pixar for quality of image, characters design etc. and I can't believe that I did not have this in my collection (until yesterday).

The characterisation and quality of image are superb; maybe because of the upscaling DVD player through HDMI on a 42" LG LCD TV!

Seriously, this is one lost classic if it is not in your collection and the textures, especially the metals; brushed aluminum, baby blue rusty wings from a 50's cadillac and many more.

All the way through this I wanted to grab my mouse and fire up tS again...a very good thing!

Really enjoyed it. And the irony is; I watched this and then got my copy of 3D World to see what number it was at....

...it isn't...:(

How can a film like Alien3 get in this particular list and not Robots? It had the wit of Ice Age and looks spectacular.

Anyway, feel free to discuss. Next time: Pinnochio 3K...oh wait, that isn't there either...

I watched Robots on t.v. about a week ago. I agree, it was very good. I thought the characters, textures, and animation were all quite well done. I don't actually watch a whole lot of CG movies, but I liked that one.

I agree with Robots, but for some reason i like Surf's up. It has a great quality, and i love the handy camera style and the lighting is awesome!

Snob.....;)

What shall we watch for the next one then? I fancy Monster House myself-at least it made the top 100. Of course, if I intend to do this properly I have to watch 99 more movies which would take at least a year given my lack of free time.

Oh, and I will have to watch the Lawnmower Man again.....Euuuurgh!!

For all those that haven't seen 3D World #100, and don't completely despise CGSociety then here is their own 100 Greatest 3D Movies. (http://features.cgsociety.org/story_custom.php?story_id=4402)

I watched Robots on telly the other day too but it didn't really grab me. Graphically, it was very nice indeed, but the story and characters didn't appeal to me that much. It's one movie I don't have in my DVD collection and I'm glad now that I waited to see it before buying it because I have no intension of buying it now.

Paul, Pinnochio 3000 is a gem! I never heard of it till I found it for €5.00 in the bargin bin at our local store. I bought it, not really sure what to expect from it but after watching it, superb!

I'm a Pixar fan big time! My favourite movie is a toss up between Toy Story, Monsters Inc., The Incredibles and Cars. If I was pressed to pick one, I would have to go with Toy Story for the simple reason that it had such a huge impact on me.

Tough call! For me it's taken a while to decide but I'm going to go with Monsters Inc. There's a scene where Mike Wyscowski (the green dude with one eye) stops and says "That was weird!" which for me was perhaps the funniest line ever in any movie. Talk about perfect comedic timing.

Also the scene where the big hairy guy is zooming through the snow on a toboggan was a symphony in hair dynamics - and what can I say? I just like monsters better than cowboys and superheroes!

Robots was pretty good I have to say. But my all time top favourite CGI movie would be Finding Nemo, there is nothing that looked as beautiful as that film did. Being a Pixar geek though, I could only put Pixar films at the top of the list, perhaps mostly because everything everyone else did, Pixar did first lol

Ok..don't shoot me..but for just plain pretty and wow factor...Final Fantasy. The Spirits Within was just beautiful. Square knows how to do CG better than most people. The story not so good..but man it was nice to look at.

Think i'd go for 'The Incredibles'. Brilliant story, excellent animation, superb casting/ voice acting, great music, top class allround.

Very tough; if you're talking totally CG, then I'd probably have to go with a Pixar film, probably Monsters Inc or Incredibles - as several people have pointed out, there's great scripts and more besides the fantastic animation in most of Pixar's stuff. Haven't seen Surf's Up so can't comment on that.

FF had moments of total brilliance I thought - some stupendous visuals at times, but let down by poor human movement at times (and of course on eof the worst plots/scripts I've ever seen!).

If, on the other hand, we talk about CG as used for effects in a live-action film, I'd probbaly go with Transformers having recently watched that - the quality of the robot effects was staggeringly good to my mind.

I know it's been surpassed by leaps and bounds, but am I the only one who holds Toy Story at the top of the CGI movie mountain?

;)

Oh, by the way, Ratatouille is out on DVD today in Ireland and the UK. I picked up the 3 Disc Limited Special Collectors boxset at Tesco. Haven't seen this movie yet so looking forward to watching it tonight.

Ratatouille water was very well done...you'll see. I'm probably the only one that liked Bug's Life even better then Toy Story. Face it there all good!

Hopper is my favorite Pixar villain by the way.

I'm with you Bob. Toy Story was great and I loved Buzz Lightyear but Bugs Life had ther better story IMO. Still a morality tale but not quite as corny as Toy Story.

Re FF - I too love this film - what kills it for me is the voice acting. No matter how pretty or spectacular the visuals are the voices all sound like a bunch of bored dudes going through the motions in a studio. Try watching FF with the sound off! It's a different experience that way.

It's funny how often a great movie can be damaged by something like this. My favourite recent example is Apocalypto by Mel Gibson. Millions of dollars and an incredible amount of work put in to make everything as factual and realistic as possible - and a great job done of it too, only the whole thing, all that effort, was turned into a joke by the depiction of a solar eclipse that was way to fast to be even close to realistic. D'oh. That's up there with the old chestnut of showing a full moon in the night sky only to see another full moon only a few days later!

Did you see Final Fantasy VII? (again the story not too good, but the CG, very nice)

I see George Lucas is going to make an animated feature length StarWars movie called "Star Wars, The Clone Wars". In time this might be a contender for the top cgi film.
