Caligari is a laboratory. It always tried to share a vision and to introduce new methods and workflows more than polishing its tools : Caligari provides us with a minimal vital set of tools to keep the brainstorm to go on.

And here is the challenge. Being a trueSpace user means that you will support an adventure by proxy :)

This is an intimate experience and I can understand the passionated, almost organics, recent posts that Caligari and Microsoft rapprochement arouses. It is the sign that the mayonnaise is raised ;)

Man has walked on the moon, visited the deepest abyss... but never lived in a virtual 3D world yet. We are unknown territories explorers and I am happy to be aboard and live that experience with so nice companions.

This being said, 3D rendering is my living, and trueSpace my main work tool, and I worry at the fact that, apart from truePlay witch adds a new service for 3D projects presentation but witch is also often seen as a bonus and not as THE output format, there is almost no new TOOL nor workflow improvement in our main software witch remains the... MODELER :o.

In this perspective, Simon's Dribble comes like a new breath : it is definately the future of trueSpace-as-we-knew-it. The trueSpace for classical rendering. The one that makes a living... TODAY and not in the DirectX XX age.

Frank's brave deed (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=4966) attests that visions and prestigious trade agreement are not all : someone has to pay for the tools we users actually need, and if the shareholders don't, then we, the users that can support 3rd party development, we could !

Personnally, since V-Ray, Lightworks HDRI and Dribble allow for perfect architecture vizualisation, I would love to support the development of QuickDraw2D, the AutoCAD for trueSpace plugin.

That tool uses VeCAD libraries to implement AutoCAD tools in tS.

It allows to :

- Import DWG 2008 files.

- Draw accurate floor plans with straight lines and advanced snap modes.

- Draw 2D curves using Bezier, Cubic B-spline, Quadratic B-spline, and combinations of it.

... And turn it into 3D walls and volumes in one clic !

And when your 3D model is done, you can :

- Edit 2D plans with measures, instructions and notes.

- Print it out or save in DWG format.

Above all, if you don't own an AutoCAD or AutoCAD-like licence yet, then QuickDraw2D will offer all this for free as a tS plugin.

Not convinced ? See this video of QuickDraw2D (http://emmanuel.asset.free.fr/downloads/trueSpace5_video_001.exe) in action in the old tS v5.1

The QuickDraw2D version you can find on this page (http://www.pcdesign.cz/plugins_eng/VeCAD_based_plugin.htm) is based on the free VeCAD5.2 library.

QuickDraw2D developper needs $500 to buy the Version 6 licence (http://www.kolbasoft.com/vecad.htm) that will bring the new features (to download from here (http://www.kolbasoft.com/vecad61.zip) )

I can put $100 on this ; if there is 4 more people ready to pay the same amount, we could add that amazing tool to trueSpace !

What do you think ?

This seems like an excellent idea. Given recent changes (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=17355) at the top, I wonder if this is idea is fate?

What does Autocad do that this doesn't, just out of curiosity? It's been years since I've used it.

I would definitely contribute to this eventually, but can't at the moment (I'm still trying to justify buying the dribble plug-in)......

Emmanuel, i would like to help here, this software looks cool without any doubt..

Two points here.

1) If is possible create a plugin for both sides, I know developer need Worskpace side sdk that is not release yet.. i suggest wait to work in both fields.

What's the idea? pay 500$ and then what? the plugin is for free? or just for these 5 persons who pay for this development? i don't understand that..

if is for free.. why we dont make 10$ per person, that make a very affordable price then we can find more people join on this than 4 persons paying 100$.

Just a thought :)

I need it! It's always a problem with Autocad files/drawins.

The plugin works in its own window and imports/exports geometry from/to trueSpace when you clic a button in its own interface ; so I see no obstacle at making it available from Workspace.

The developper needs to purchase a licence from VeCAD to use their library in his plugin. Next, he will be allowed to distribute his own program the way he wants.
Note that the $500 are the price for the licence from VeCAD. It does not include the developper's time to create QuickDraw2D, the plugin that makes that interface to run in tS.

In my suggestion, the idea is to make the pros among us to contribute in the making of a tool they will really use at work and that will make architecture and design work easier. We can balance that 100 or even $150 is not a lot of money compared to the time we waste everyday in DWG conversions.
Of course we could seek for thousands of people paying each $10, but even $10 is too much for a hobbyist who just want to have some 3D fun and may never need to open a DWG file or print out 2D plans from a 3D design.

Will there also be a separate charge to cover the developer's time?

Frootee, I can't speak for the developper :D
I just try to see if the community is ready to support this kind of project and at least can take at its charge the developper's fees (library licence).

trueSpace, and Rosetta architecture even more, allows for custom developments. That is its big power.
If the community, and the ones that can afford such support, don't put a penny in the tools they need but wait for the mothership to realize all their dreams, we take the risk to see that mothership to move into an other orbit because some alien planets may have a better attraction force.

Motion Studio was -is- a great tool but I had no orders in animation at this time, when Scott was working on it, and I never purchased it ; and today I blame my selfish mind... I don't want to miss the chance again.
We have talented developpers around, we exactly know the tools we need and the way we want them to behave, so why don't we order for these tools ?
Here is the idea.

Emanuelle !

I looked at the video and must say one thing :

I´m talking my mouth fuzzy on this forum about the

built in feature of exactly that !

When we are talking about Sketchup functionality ( see the

other threads . calisoft etc. ) we are talking about cad drawing

and snapping etc. !

I " expect something in that direction from the " mothership "

but have nothing against a development from 3d party !

My< favorite> application at the moment is Moi 3d !

It takes this functionality to a next level !

You can cad - draw into the 3d dimention and build " nurbs " from

it. Those can even be used with booleans and booleans on curves !

When I talk to some people on this forum about it...... I think I´m talking

against walls ! Thats how some people here see things !

Here are links to videos to show what this drawing in the 3d dimension

is like !

http://moi3d.com/1.0/docs/sunburst.htm

http://moi3d.com/1.0/docs/crownofclubs.htm

http://moi3d.com/1.0/docs/pod.htm

If this kind of functionality is opened to the community I dont care if its

3d party or mothership........ I´d be happy to pay money for it !!!!!!!;):)

Thank you, Emmanuel, for your information about my VeCAD based plugin. Today I was testing my plugin on the latest version of trueSpace7.5, it really works very well in trueSpace6 modeling view. I added updated information about this plugin on my web site and I uploaded a 30 days trial version of quickDraw2D. tsx plugin, too.

I have to correct some your information:

- Import DWG 2008 files. (only DXF 2000)

- Draw accurate floor plans with straight lines and advanced snap modes.

- Draw 2D curves using Bezier, Cubic B-spline, Quadratic B-spline, and combinations of it.

... And turn it into 3D walls and volumes in one clic ! (only in Czech version, but I add it to Enflish version soon)

And when your 3D model is done, you can :

- Edit 2D plans with measures, instructions and notes.

- Print it out or save in DWG format. (only in DXF or JPG)

I think my plugin could be very important for some users of trueSpace7.5. Now, all user can test my plugin for 30 days. Within this time I add new commands and I upload a new trial version. I think that the price of improved plugin could be about 20 dollars.

Thanks for the informations Libor :)

QuickDraw2D can run from Workspace !

I've made a test, and it works. I only created an icon that launches the tool via the Bridge. So Bridge must be set to ON.

See it in action on WMV attached.
