I feel stupid making this post but I don't know how else to contact the person in question.

For the past month, whenever I voice a strong opinion on a subject on these forums (something I've done a lot since the news of the Microsoft Caligari merger came to light), someone has been emailing me quite distasteful emails. The sender is sending the email via some third party because they are addressed from ME to ME. Suffice to say, I am not sending these emails to myself.

Look, I'm just voicing my opinions on various topics and if you don't like what I say, I'm sorry, but never, once, have I posted a personal attack at anyone, not even Caligari with the current silence on their future direction. We are a community of friends, or at least I thought we were, but someone here has taken a disliking to my posts the past four weeks and the emails I'm getting are quite disheartening.

Please, who ever you are, stop sending me annominous emails. If you dislike what I'm saying, let me know and we can discuss it, I'll try and put forward my points of view in a way that you can see where I'm coming from and we aren't on bad footing, when there is no harm intended by my posts.

Sorry about any misunderstandings.

Paul.

You should not have to apologise for receiving malicious emails Paul. It is cowardice; plain and simple.

Is it not easy enough to hide behind an avatar or screen name that people now cannot even put their name to an email?

Ignore them and report the matter to your ISP who may be able to get more info than you can.

Continue to air your views in a responsible and mature manner and pity anyone who has to go to such lengths to make their own point when there is a perfectly good forum here.

You cannot stop them doing this...just laugh at the extra time they have wasted in covering their tracks to no avail.

Reminds me of those cocky kids who badmouth you out of punching distance then keep running away if you get too near them knowing a swift clip around the ear would be forthcoming if you ever got close enough.

Can't stand that either...so now I look forward to my inevitable email now I have chipped in. Won't even get a reply from me...just added to my blocked list and a report to my ISP.

Good luck.

That is disgusting. Are there any clues that you can glean from the email? It is usually fairly easy to track them down or pass onto your isp as has been stated to sort it out.

I know its not ideal but you have a link on the bottom of your post which takes whoever to your website. Even though your email is protected from viewing here its not on your website. I just checked. Does your tracker give any clues. You will see I connected at about 08:15 to your site. Between your tracker and perhaps Caligari helping you could narrow down an ip address?

This sounds like email abuse from what you describe. That would mean you are within your rights to report this person.

I would report them to several places, first to your email provider, second to your ISP (if it is different than your email provider), and third to their email provider if you can see it.

Be sure to check properties for the email, usually emails have embedded IP address information as to where they are sent from, and that can let you identify the email service being used, or where in the country it is being mailed from etc. If you don't want to do that for yourself, reporting it to your email provider or your ISP should do since they will have tools and experience at tracking this sort of thing down.

Don't tolerate abuse, be sure to report it, this is the worst possible use of the internet, taking all that is good about it and using it for a very bad purpose. At the same time as reporting it, ask how you can block it from getting into your inbox. And personally I recommend simply deleting the mails without even reading them from now on, let the criminal waste their time and breath to no avail.

As a note to the email author, if something said here in the forums is out of bounds, if some remarks step over a line, then we have policies in place to deal with it, so do please leave us to resolve these issues where we feel they need resolving. If we take no action, then it is because the remarks are within bounds, the person is entitled to that opinion and to voice it, and that means no-one else needs to take action about those comments. Naturally if people disagree with comments, they are welcome to say so - but they should step forward and say so without hiding of course, and indeed discussion is what the forums are for, so why not raise the points here in the forums, in a valid way?

Sorry to hear this has happened, and I hope you get some resolution.

HTH!

It's more than a wee bit sinister when things like this happen, but there are a lot of strange people out there.

If yoo still have the emails, PM me and I will try and trace them for yoo.

Sigh:mad:

I'm with everyone here - I suggest to whomever it is, that they stop before they cause more trouble to themselves and others. What goes around, comes around (usually to bite you in the tail)

Sheesh Paul, that sucks! Weird too because I've read probably most of your posts here and I can't imagine you ever saying anything that inflammatory to get someone so riled that they would do this.

Whatever happens mate, don't feel bad about the choices someone else has made - you have no control over those choices only the choices you yourself make.

FWIW I would recommend that you choose to take the advice offered here and report this.

Honestly... This is why I do not give permission to publish my e-mail address for the monthly contests. and why I don't usually give it out on forums.

The person sending this abuse should be ashamed, not only for themselves but for being the type of person that causes people like me to keep that info hidden.

Keep fighting Paul...

No one should edit themselves short of profanity or racial slurs.

One of the saddest parts of the web is what you are going through.

So many 'tough guys' are hiding behind their anonymous web browsers.

Sickening…(If not for my personal 'edit' button I would launch into a profanity laden tirade).

Theres a Farside cartoon where God is making the world and seeding it with people. He says to himself something like "And just to make it interesting.." as he uses a little spice container labelled "Jerks" to dust the planet with. The message is clear in every community, even ours, there are jerks and you have struck yourself a doozy.

I read a lot of posts and don't always agree with people but its a bit crazy to over react or hold a grudge. I hope someone out there is feeling some shame.

Please do as advised, and report this first to your ISP, but I will put forward that you should make a seperate complaint for each/ every e-mail sent (dont send all the e-mails to ISP with a complaint) they do lax at times, but need to take action and trace after a number of complaints.

Oh Paul, that's just rotten! ... and totally undeserved :(

I have received emails from "me to me".. at work, which appear to be a form of spam.. the fact that these paraticular onese seem to relate to specific posts of yours would seem to indicate some sort of malicious troll-type activity.... very weird.

By all means have someone track them down if you can, but really.. you can also just delete anything like that, that sneaks in past your spam filter - Without Opening It! - emails like that can do damage to your computer.. .. you just never know what it's tracking in on its dirty little feet!

It would seem the neighbourhood trolls are back again. And I thought we had left them behind a long time ago.

Very sorry to hear this Paul however I cannot give any better advise than that which has already been given. I hope this gets sorted out quickly as things like this can really get you down.

I made a complaint to Norm once about some one stalking me. They evidently (according to Norm) got the information from the old forum. However, I didn't put my real mailing address on the forum.

The only place I ever put that information, was when I purchased something.
(info - my email, my home address complete with zip code.)

emails should never be revealed unless one is a member of the forum. How my home address popped up, I'll never know. They also made reference to my bout with my bipolar troubles, which I have only addressed here on these forums.

Anyway the stalker ended up putting all that information on another blog and of course figured out my phone number.

Luckily, I have good spam protection and run a credit report ever so often.

I'm affraid there's not much one can do, other than told and block your address etc. etc.

But they'll get the address anyway sooner or later, there's alot of ways to do that.

Try ignore them, worst case scenario is if they use your name in bad, then you might hve to chage address, but the damage is done and might be done everytime they use it.

To trace etc. is hard work and what they do is they highjack company servers and hide the sender address, so everytime they send from different server as well, they swapp around servers not to get cought and everything is done by automatic, and as long as they manage to hide their ftp and some code their server on the company server is rebuild every night and reported to them so they knowwhen to get out of there...

Good luck Paul and try not to care over them, they'll come in some form or other, have bee like last 5-7 years, only thing is how many, sometimes one just needs to change address since the spam is more than ordinary mail.

Block the address though and keep spam filters and email junk folder...

Are you sure it is not a Spam message? Your email is clear as day at your site. Whenever I enter the Caligari Gallery I tell them not to display my email address.

I get "Me" emails at another address that has less protection but sends all this "Me" stuff to my Spam directory. Sometimes it grabs part of the post to look Real.
If I order things by mail, fill out forms, shop at ebay, etc I use the garbage email address with the Spam directory...(50 spams a week) my normal email address...(1 spam a month)

For certain sites I use my googlemail account. It is very good at keeping the trash out but I never use it for important mails or sensitive information.

So far all emails I have been expecting through that account have come through properly and in the months that I have been using it, to sign up here, there and everywhere I have had just 1 spam message get through.

Cheers
