OK! I created this just under 6 hours ago. (I had to pull an all-nighter to get it finished!) It's my idea of a "comeback" to my earlier song "The Light Within the Dark." (here's a link to the original:

http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=4628)

and here's a link to the new one:

http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/124312

What do you guys think?

I was wondering if I could get some honest feedback on this (for the sake of improvement). Does anyone have some to give?

* Is it better than the original?

* On a scale of 1-10, where would you put this?

* Does it sound like a finished piece, or could it use a little more work?

I'm kinda checking back here every 5 minutes or so to see if I've gotten a response, and thus far it's been about 10 hours straight with little or no activity. I understand that I can't get everyone's opinion/advice, but I really do look forward to the C & C, and it would be nice if I could get some type of response, whether negative or positive. At the very least, I would have something to go by.:(

anxiously standing by.....

I'll start by saying that I'm not a huge fan of "techno-music", but it had a good sound to it. I liked the way it started out slow and built rather smoothly to a climax, then ended with a couple of abrupt beats, not unlike the way it started. All in all not bad at all.

I would give my opinion, but I'm tone deaf, so It wouldn't be worth a hoot. I thought the cartoon was cute. and the percussion was good too.

The cartoon wasn't created by me. That's just the online player. Thanks about the percussion, though! I wanna say that I spent about 7 hours or so working on this (throughout the entire night!).

Hi 2much

Well I thought it was pretty good. Played it for my partner and she liked it too. We both enjoyed the way it started fairly lowkey and laid back. There was one point where i was starting to think the percussion was a little over the top for the melodic part which created a sort of tension - I wanted the percussion to either calm down a little or the rest to build up - but then the melodic part picked up to match the percussion and resolved that tension which was quite satisfying.

My partner commented that it put here in mind of the rave scene in the first 'Blade' movie - which is pretty high praise coming from her! She said she could easily see people raving to it and it got her feet tapping - I should point out that she's an accomplished pianist guitarist and vocalist herself so she has considerable musical knowledge.

Neither of us are great techno fans but we both enjoyed the track.

I particularly liked the way it changed as it went along - I would just start to think it's beginning to get repetitive and then it would change which kept me interested.

I'm glad you two enjoyed it!:D At the very least, I feel proud of those 6 golden hours of non stop typing, clicking, and constant ingesting of caffeine!;) By this point, everyone in the building is sick of hearing it, but for some strange reason, I just can't help but replay the song numerous times!

About the song itself:

I think I'll give it some more work. This version is going to be a demo for now, so be ready for a much more on-the-edge-of-your-seat final!

again, I'm glad that you all thought it was good! Hope this next one will be excellent enough to go on your playlist!

As I said, I'm not a huge Techno guy (heck I'm 51 years old, what can I say?) though I enjoy the occasional bit of Trance. I've always thought that ten percent of any genre of music is brilliant, 50% is OK but only mildly interesting and the remaining 40% is derivative rubbish.
Your track was an enjoyable listen but probably a bit too excitable to make one of my playlists - I like things a little slower with lots of dirty guitars.....
Any let us know when you've tweaked it and I'll give it another listen.

PS - Do your neighbours and yourself a big favour and get some headphones - they will thank you for it.

I like this quite a bit. Now make an animation to go with it :) You're pretty handy with them keyboards, wish I knew how to play. I wasn't a raver, but attended some raves when I was a young man back in the day just for kicks. This brings back memories.

I think this is MUCH better than the original.

The synth sounds in the first part of this one are much better than the ones used towards the end. What software are you using? There are some good and free synth VSTi plugins that might have some better sounds you could use and still get variety.

Also I thought the percussion track is mixed in too loud and fights with the rest of the instruments. It also gets a bit tinny and stale after a while. In particular I don't like the samples used for the symbols and hi-hat. The clapping is ...ok... but maybe could be improved with a different sample, or instrument: snare? Cowbell? Admittedly I'm a bit biased against the clap sound because there's not much lamer than some guy standing up with a microphone clapping to a beat....;)

I really like the sound of the synth string in the beginning but they get totally overpowered by the main theme when that hits. It's almost to the point that I have to turn up the volume for the beginning to hear the synth strings then turn it down when the main theme hits. I'm not keen on the synth sounds used towards the end though the melody used seems fine.

Some of the volume and velocity issues could be because of the speakers and sound setup that you are using though... are you using reference speakers? The key is to have as flat and accurate a frequency response as you can get within your budget, so that the music you write isn't colored by your speaker setup.

Thanks for the compliments! I'll get back to them in a sec, but right now I have some more news. Here's a revised version of D within L:

I like synth and midi composed music myself. :)

Need to lower the dynamics of the drums imo and I would stagger melody with a backdrop of another instrument perhaps in an echo chorus.

--------------------------------------
Here's one of mine, Sock Hop Synth

It's MIDI format, Windows should play it in Media Player.

Can you tell I'm old school? :D

Here's another update on this song. I've already released a 4th demo of the song. It's on newgrounds. Here's the link:

http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/132748

However, I've already gotten quite close to releasing the fifth (and hopefully final) demo, so I figured that I'll give you guys a preview before I do, to see if there's anything I missed.

Here's the link:

In case you can't download it from there, I've also attached it to this post.

Here's another update on the song. Nope, this isn't the 6th demo, it's still the 5th (I haven't officially released it yet). What do you guys think?

Hmmm...no replies:(, I checked out the link and saw that you need to register to access the file. No worries, I uploaded it to NG. Here's the link. (http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/136809)

Hope you enjoy it, but what do you think? How can I improve it?

Thanks! :D I've decided to take all of the good elements of each version and putting them together, but I need to know which parts to take out as well. Any ideas? example: should I keep the strings in the background? Are they too low?

Sounds really nice. I don't think it needs changing but I'm no musician. Maybe someone more musically inclined can give you a critique. I like it as is though.
