I am currently working on 2 separate projects. Both are animations, and I hope that at least one of them will win the monthly contest. The first is a unique story that I am still writing, and I am already creating the opening sequence. The second is actually a remix of one of my older projects. If you go to the "MARCH 2006" section of the animation contest, you will see that I won an honorable mention under the name "John Danowski." I never managed to finish that project, and instead, I am starting over. This new version will be better than the original, and hopefully, funnier.
I've attached .wmv files of what I have already completed. The quality of the videos is not that great, but I'm restricted not to go anywhere above 3.14 MB. Tell me what you think! |

Seems to me you are trying to publish someone else's logo. Look out! Here comes Mr. Lucas now! You won't win a spot in the gallery with plagiarism, but your #1 project has potential. Be creative but be ORIGINAL! |

If you read both logos, you will see that instead of "20th Century Fox," it says "20th Century Kid"...and instead of "LucasFilm LTD" it says "Ghyslain LTD."
(Ghyslain is the name of the actual SWK.) |

I'm putting these projects aside for now, due to my need to concentrate on my animated sword fight. I'll resume them at some later time. |

True.
"Twentieth Century Kid" would be considered a parody and in that category almost anything goes.
However! The music, although a rearrangement and most likely not your rearrangement, is both copyrighted and registered ( Lucas Films owns the rights to the original score and who ever did the rearrangement bought the rights to do so and owns the rights to that rearrangement.) and the "Star Wars" title is a registered trade mark and logo.
Because you have not changed either, you can't legally publish (up loading to an Internet site is a form of publishing - "... to make public") without expressed permission from it's owners, and doubtfully, Caligari would allow themselves to be an accomplice to copyright infringement; and so your submission to the animation competition would most likely be disqualified.
Your skill at setting up the animation is evident, and you have obvious talent in the art of editing and timing. It would be a shame to waste your skills using someone else's creativity, UNLESS you took the trouble to actually obtain permission to use these two icons.
This is just some friendly advice and NOT a negative critique on your abillities.

Though I don't recall who or when, I'm fairly sure I've seen vids in the animation gallery that had copyrighted music accompanying them. Given the extortionate costs of securing the rights to use [most] copyrighted music for such a purpose, I doubt the individual[s] had permission.
As long as music doesn't get used for commercial use, or is included in something that reaches a certain threshold of public popularity it usually manages to "stay under the radar", or has blind eye [deaf ear? :)] turned to it. I don't know about the 20th Century fanfare, but I have heard that Lucas can be very... protective of the "THX sound", so... http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/dunno.gif |

quote from http://www.lucasfilm.com/press/news/news20061011.html
"Roffman noted that many Star Wars fans around the world produce replicas of Star Wars costumes for their own personal use and enjoyment, an activity to which Lucasfilm Ltd. has no objection. One such group, the "501st Legion" of stormtroopers, is a global organization that has often worked with Lucasfilm and its partners. "We appreciate that Star Wars has sparked the imaginations of fans around the world," he said. "We would never want to discourage fans from showcasing their enthusiasm for the movies. However, anyone who tries to profit from using our copyrights and trademarks without authorization crosses the line; they become an infringer and we will go after them." |

The only reason I brought this up is that it happens to be a topic of discussion in the forum of another "creativity" web site dealing with copy righted music and registered trade marks and icon "props" (like the Star Gate); so I've done a bit of research.
The fact is: If 2Much4U were to submit his animations with such unapproved copyrighted material, AND Caligari chooses to display his entries in that month's gallery, though the animations themselves would not be earning money for 2Much4U they will have become part of Caligari's advertising showing the capabilities of tS and ultimately leading to SOMEONE's profit. This is determined by the fact that there are links within the same web site to Caligari's product and download page which may lead to the purchase of the software.
NOW, whether or not Caligari will go ahead and display 2Much4U's animations containing unauthorized material is only speculation on my part, but my impression is that Mr. Ormandy and his crew are professionals and run Caligari in an honest manner; and whether or not Lucas Films would pursue either for copyright infringements is anyone's guess, but I suggest 2Much4U click on Matski007's link and read VERY carefully.
Again; I'm not on a campaign (although I certainly wouldn't appreciate someone using MY creativity for their gain unless I approved) and certainly not negatively criticizing 2Much4U's abilities. I just would hate for any talented young artist to have this kind of difficulty before they have a chance to really get started.

ps: If you are speeding and driving recklessly and the observing COP decides he'd rather eat his doughnut than arrest you, doesn't mean that you aren't breaking the law and responsible for your actions!
pps: If 2Much4U would happen to win the months competition he WOULD receive compensation in the form of awarded software, tutorials, etc. ... not money but definitely something of value. |

He would indirectly receive a prize, I think competition is regarded as something quite different, because he is not directly sure he will win or not.
If a tree falls in the woods and there is no one around, does it make a sound? lol
Also forgot to see, interesting animations there! liking your editing work but Im not seeing much of animation just interesting editing, keep it up! |

The "Star Wars" title is a registered trade mark and logo.
The above quote is only a portion of the original message.
That logo won't be used directly without some sort of manipulation. I plan the trick people into thinking that this is yet another star wars fan-film, but, once the letters reach a certain distance, the word "THE" will come down from the top, and the word "KID" will do the same from the bottom. This will change the title from "STAR WARS" to "THE STAR WARS KID."
Check out my previous video, and you'll see what I mean. (It's located in the honorable mentions for the March 2006 Gallery.) |

Hummmmmmmmmm!
Reminds me of a dispute between Microsoft and another "upstart" software developer who used the uncapitalized word "window" in the title for his software (of similar purpose and design). I'm pretty sure MS won the legal battle.
In your case though, your animation MIGHT be considered a parody. Because a parody is a "spoof" editorial, it can get away with certain "infringements". You MIGHT get away with it.
An interesting legal quandary!!!!!!!! |

My newest video projects! Tell me what you think
Rather than discuss copyright issues, I am going to tell you what I think of the content, I think thats what your question was about. (be warned I shoot straight from the hip)
project 1- (a)I didn't care much for the strobe light effect especially at the end and the black and white background is driving me nuts, as my eyes are bad enough, but young peoples eyes are still good and maybe can take all of that. (b) Thought it took too long to build the logo, a chicken I think, mybe all the parts should have come togerter at once, don't use too much time, could get boring. (c) leave the chicken and name there and fade it in with the web site name so both stick in our memory, too much on the star, over stating it is too much, makes me forgot the company name.
Project 2- (a) I also did not read it as 20th century Kid, because everybody is admiring how nice it copies the original, no time to read as its only 4 seconds approx. anyway, let along time enough to read what under the title.
(b) I think the mid portion looks good, how do you pronounce Ghyslain anyway?
(c) The last part also drove me nuts, having the sentance pop around 6 or 7 times. I don't have anything to say about the ending.
Hope I did not offend.:D |

Yeah ...
but ...
at 15 look at his abilities at timing and editing!!!
I would just like to see these abilities put to work on something original!
I agree that the text fading in and out so quickly is a bit unnerving, but that can be fixed easily by adding enough time between fades to read the text. |

Thanks for everyone's comments on this (whether compliments or criticism).;)
I do take all of them seriously, as I want my animations to meet as many expectations as possible. And based on what I've heard so far, there are many questions going round. I'll start by answering the most popular one: copywrited material.
I did some research throughout the animation gallery, and as it turns out, almost every page since the gallery of January 1997 contains at least one entry that includes copywrited material. Many of these entries have been winners, and their count is so high that I could'nt even fit them into a single post. Also note that one of the most poular entries on the Caligari website, "South Park: Matrix Reloaded," contains the entire audio track for the official preview for the movie. I think that if I were to submit these, it would hardly be a problem, as many of the past entries have done the same.
Now, about the projects themselves...
Project 1: Should I change my star-files.net logo? This is being considered because many people don't like the "strobe light" effects. Any sugestions are therefore welcome.
Project 2: I have been improving my 20th Century Kid Logo over the past month or so. Included in this post are both the original file and the new one. Please take a look.
Main things that I would like to know:
* Did I do a good job reworking the model?
* Is my hierarchy satisfactory?
* What do you think about the two rendering times?
* How well does it match the real logo?
Please tell me what you've got to say on this, as I hope to use all concerns in order to improve apon these two projects. |

Sorry for the long length of my previous post.
I've shortened it up a great deal, so it may be easier to read now.:jumpy: |
