Just saw this link in a blog that I follow and thought I'd share...

http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/03/10/35-fantastic-hdr-pictures/

Some of the images are pretty cool.

Yo Bro! Thanks for the entertaining link. There are a few good shots in there alright. Did you read the comments? There was a very wide range of responses which I found interesting as I could see both sides of the argument. Some of the pics did look over-done to my eye and in some the effect worked to enhance the drama and feel of a picture.

HDRI images as a source of lighting data is one thing - but many of these shots are average to OK shots which simply look unnatural to the extent that I start to wonder, 'What's the point?'.

I'm curious as to what other folk think of these....

Ironically to me the best HDRI photos I've seen are the ones you cannot tell HDRI was used.

I´m a photographer ... thats how I earn my money....

and most of the time my clients dont bother about hdri images !

Its mostly in the indoor scenes where I would get washed out lights

and black shadows when I use about 3 püictures combined into 1.

But I dont make hdrs out of them I rather only use the pictures partly(only in

the areas with the problems).

Hdr in rendering is a totaly different pair of shoes.

I like to use it for reflective type materials and I dont use the hdrs for the

lighting AND for the background most of the time.

I use different backdrops.:)

I did read some of the comments and I know what you mean about the images/photos. They are fun but I've seen more realistic-looking 3D renders than some of these images. They almost look like drawings or 3D renders themselves.

Anyway, I thought some of them may be useful for truespace but I dunno....

Anyway, I thought some of them may be useful for truespace but I dunno....

They would be if they were panoramic hdri or spherical or boxed.....

and if we could use them at sizes of around 2400px and up.....

but what should we do with them the way and size they are ?

Like the Hdri studio collection I posted in the garage (its an ongoing thread..

so there is more to come... ) I will post some highresolution panoramic

hdrs from landscapes incl. treelines........!

Those can be used for your renders.

You dont have to use the same background photo as is the reflection hdr.

The background pic can be any picture you made with an ordinary camera

and no software tricks at all ... !;)
