First did this in another 3D program and adapted it over to trueSpace.
I'm sure this has been done before and much better than my crude effort, but just in case someone has a need for it or wants to improve it, here it is.
User the center of the lens to focus in on what you want to magnify.
Remember increased distance = greater magnfication.
Also, be sure and use the zoom tool (the "X" icon instead of scrolling , so you won't get perimeter fuzzies )
I removed all reflection parameters in the material box, used a plain glass shader, rendered in Lightworks, turned off shadows and made it double sided.
:)
Note: Here's a pretty good explanation of magnification and refraction provided by Olympus. It includes the formula. Needs Java to view the image.

You're welcome. :)
Playing around with it, I found it can be animated as well.
My scenario was a 'bug hunter' looking for bugs on flowers and grass.
I just made some crude objects, passed the lens over the grass and flowers and it works great!
Could be used for intros, detective stories, distortion effects, simulated camera and microscope effects, etc. etc.
A cool toy to have in the ole toy chest. :) |

a magnifying glass is a handy thing to have around. I keep one in my object library, and used it on the second picture in my submitted picture thread. (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2383)
the porthole that you are looking through uses my magnifying glass. |

A short video on my experimentation with the magnifying effect through a lens. Searching for a bug in grass. :D |

Well I did this fast render in Kerkythea using the package I submit
with this post I will post it to the garage too !
Its a Bipath Metropolis Light Transport render with exagerated
colour diffraction of Abbe 3,7 which is pretty low !
normal lens glasses have between 20 and 60 !
The lenses that I post are from nurbs and are obj .
and .3dm files in case you need that too.
They should be quite smooth so they should work pretty well
optically !(All major types) plus a ball from nurbs !
Have fun !:)

Yup ! smooth as a b_t !:D
And the render engine is free its Kerkythea !
It works as a standalone !:)
Thats the only 3 apps I´d miss (incl. Truespace !)
I will post the render through ! the glass when its finished cooking .....
but it already looks good !:)

This is the render with the concave concave lens..... the one far left
right in front of the Kerkythea camera......
You could make fisheye pictures with it that way if you use
wide angle setting !
Again Bipt MLT with chromatic disp. Abbe 3.7 on lenses on ground and
abbe 20 on camera lens...:)

picture is with this... new fisheye lens I want to share with
you... (In the gararge)!:)
