Leading Edge...

Intel is looking forward to bringing leading edge microprocessors and technologies to the market, as it unveiled its plans for the second half of this year. The company expects a six-core processor coming up later in 2008. In addition to “Dunnington,” the codename for the six-core processor, Intel will also bring its new Itanium processor named “Tukwila.”

“Dunnington” for expandable multi-processor servers that is said to become available in the second half of 2008 is based on the 45nm high-k process technology, offers compatibility with systems designed from quad-core Xeon processors and it supports FlexMigration technology, that allows a single compatible virtualization pool to support migration across servers. In addition, it will feature 1.9 billion transistors and 16MB of L3 cache.

Intel’s “Tukwila,” considered to be the next generation Itanium processor, has four cores, 30 MB cache, QuickPath Interconnect, dual Integrated Memory Controller and mainframe-class RAS features, the company’s Senior Vice President and General Manager Pat Gelsinger unveiled.

In addition to all that, Intel’s “Nehalem” will have 2 to 8 cores and will be capable of delivering four times the memory bandwidth compared to the Intel Xeon systems. Nehalem will be equipped with 731 million transistors, up to 8 MB L3 cache, QuickPath Interconnect which will offer up to 25.6 GB per second and integrated memory controller

This is all great stuff, but the only thing is, cooling. If you look at the current beastly quad core processors, the cooling units needed to keep your system from melting are huge. We may be able to keep pushing the technological barriar forward but keeping things cool and happy is becoming a problem in itself.

At the moment, cooling rods are being used which offer great effect, but I see a lot of talk of water cooling lately and I can honestly say, I wouldn't be happy having water running around inside my PC.

Well, it will be like the old Super Computers that need refrigeration systems.

Just slap a window unit size - 12,000 BTU Air Conditioner on your PC and you're good to go. :D

well, I finally got all the parts to build my new quad-core

computer, and it will be a wind machine.

I got two strong case fans, and a fan card that goes in a PCI

slot, and a thermaltake aftermarket cpu cooler with another

big fat fan. Hope that does it.

Plus there is lots of ventilation in the case.

LOL!! Sounds like you're building a wind tunnel! LOL!!

Was reading about these new 6 core CPU's. They are being aimed at the server market so I doubt we'll see them in desktop's for a while.

The more wind the better! I just hope I don't fry anything. I'm
experienced at building my own computers, I just don't do it that
often. This time I got smart and bought the newegg insurance plan
on the mobo.

Six cores, eh? well this one should be enough for me for a good
while. Now I just need a laptop.....

Actually all the last parts just came, so it's computer build time!

oh yeah and my case looks like alien luggage. I never had
a case before that is actually fun!

I don't remember which mag I saw it in but there was a fellow, from Calgary I believe, that took an old refrigerator and turned it into a case for his PC. Yes, the freezer was the cooling unit.

Ahh... a PC that serves cold beer..... Homer would love it.

My mum got this PC, I forget where from but it was fitted with a zalman cooler that is huge. It's a Core 2 system, fairly high spec but the thing is it is very cool <40C and is silent. I think my brother got the same cooler for his quad-core...

Me - my PC sounds like a rocket taking off....all because of the intel cooler...

LOL! Using the freezer is a great idea! ... well as long as your watch the defrosting cycles...

The PCs today run pretty cool in comparison to the P3's and P4's. But many of us are using that thermal advantage to overclock them like crazy. I'm pumping enough extra juice into my poor motherboard and CPU to achieve almost a 100% overclock. 1.8 -> 3.3 ghz. :D

Overclocked like that, the thing heats the room up like crazy, and I had to install a window unit just to keep the *room* temperature down, LOL! Lately thought the cat hair is starting to build up inside the case so I've had to clock back to 3.0GHz until I get a chance to vacuum the thing out. ;)

It'd be cool to see photos of your new rig, Tyler. You can see my rig at this thread here:

Only real change is that I've added 4 GB more ram since then. :)
Good luck on your system build!

hey Jack,

Thanks for your good wishes :). I guess I'll take it out on the balcony and take pictures when I'm done. here's a picture of the case:

http://www.triglon.com/shopexd.asp?id=77#

Handles are a big deal to me :).

the specs are:

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4ghz

EVGA 8800gt 512mb graphics

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0 LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Ultra Durable II Intel Motherboard

G.SKILL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

Some kinda ASUS dvd drive that gets good reviews:

Some kinda Samsung 500gb HD

And this 120gb IDE drive I got just for the OS so I can freely

reformat the thing anytime I feel like with no regrets!

And sometime soon I want to get this 22" monitor:

$25o isn't bad, right?

Jack your computer looks radical. So you inscribed that design on

the case yourself??

Thanks Tyler! :D
Yeah, I got a dremel for Christmas and wanted to try it out. It kept melting the plastic at first, but eventually I got the hang of it. ;)

Cool looking case you picked out. :)
I like GSkill, they make good ram that actually works in most boards.

I'm using an Acer monitor as well. They are cheap and work pretty well, but the gamma is WAY off. So you'll need to calibrate before working on any serious projects.

Using a freezer means you have to be aware of condensation in your system, another problem. I've read a lot about keeping PC's cool and at the moment, cooling rods (rods with liquid inside them which draws the heat away via convection), is the way to go for high spec systems. Freezers and water cooling were discussed too in the articles I read, with water cooling seeming to be getting some push, but I honestly wouldn't like to have a water cooling system in my PC!!

Thank you, glad you like my case :). And I can carry it all by myself too.

I forgot to mention the PSU: It's an Enermax Infiniti 650 watt.

I hope the RAm works: It's not on the approved list for this mobo,

but that list is just a guideline, and I like this RAM, so I hope it works.

Anyway, I think I recall seeing other people do it, so it should be fine.

The gamma is off, huh? that's not so good.....
