In response to the "show me your room" thread, I thought I'd come up with something fun like this. Just post a screenie of your desktop for all to see. If it makes you feel more comfortable, just pixelate the stuff you don't want people to view.
Here's mine:

Despite all the options for customisation in this day and age, I prefer minimalist. I have a black background on both monitors, icons for highly used programs (mostly organised into folders), and that's it. No background images, videos, or those odd expansion tool thingies that Vista puts down the side :)
I like every ounce of power and memory to go on what I am doing, even if its just a 400Kb JPG for the desktop image. I like everything uncluttered and simple so I can find everything I need quickly. I like low stress on the eyes with a nice dark background. Minimalist, and functional.
My desktop has looked that way for the last 10 years. And yep, I quite like minimalist music too :)
HTH!
Tom
PS - the grab is across both monitors. Also, the desktop is always invisible on both monitors beneath a ton of stuff, whether I'm at work or play, so again I never worry about putting anything on there :) |

You use Limewire? It contains spyware, and is impossible to uninstall. Try Shareaza (http://shareaza.sourceforge.net/). It doesn't have any hidden malware, takes up very little space, is not a memory hog, and supports more protocols.
Shareaza all the way!!!
PS. shareaza.com is NOT, I repeat, NOT the official site of shareaza. It's a scam that intends to impersonate the REAL software.
Get shareaza from sourceforge. |

Here mine. I use Object Dock from Stardock (that thing on the bottom). I don't like icons cluttering up my desktop.... :)

Here is my desktop... I shrunk it down to comply with the "courtesy" size for pictures here.
And you thought YOUR desktop was cluttered! I only have the icons that I use often on it.
I know because that notice that I have unused icons on my desktop has never come up :D

Right, here is my desktops. I use to logins, one for the net and the other stripped down for work. Until a Quad core comes my way. :)
Just streamlined. |

@scapino, Object dock is cool stuff. I worry about stability using a 3rd party windows manager. You have a freaky desktop image btw. ;)
@ 2much4u, cool thread idea. :)
Here's mine, mostly a vanilla Vista desktop. Sometimes I get rid of the widget thing on the right since it can interfere with some full screen apps.

Cool thread - no doubt a good psychoanalyst could tell us heaps about ourselves from our desktops!
TomG - flat black? That's really cool and mysterious!
I don't have heaps of icons on my desktops and almost always display a recent artwork of my own (psychoanalyst nods and and write 'narcissistic' in his notes). Currently my main PC has a scene adapted from my recent animation which I made to the appropriate format. I've only just installed two 19 inch widescreen LCD monitors which makes for an unusual aspect (2880x900) which suits my requirements perfectly. Whenever possible I have one screen (1440x900) as my main view and the other screen holding the tools - I've included a screenshot showing my current favourite trueSpace layout which illustrates this well.
Lastly is the desktop from my older PC which I use for Sound work as it's got a great soundcard and which I surf the net with mostly (using Firefox). This picture is one which I did quite a while ago but it's one I am particularly happy with. |

True ! In this scope, this topic is interesting :)
It is always good to see what other apps trueSpacers use and I guess some were frustrated to see my desktop all empty.
I think I got the habbit to use the desktop as a workbench since Amiga days -and remember : Amiga's desktop was called "Workbench"-. I mean, I use the desktop to place temporary files, then clean/delete it before I shut down the computer... Just the way I like my office's desktop to be clear & clean before I begin a fresh new day of work.
To start programs, I use the built-in start menu. It is a better way to start programs because it is accessible even if you already run an app that covers/hides the desktop.
I also use a dock on my laptop, but it is more a wink at my clients who stick with Apple computers :)
So, the psychoanalyst would say I am of the cleanliness obsessed :D |

My current work desktop - I'm quite prone to icon clutter, I admit. Background at the mo is an Apophysis fractal, but changes fairly regularly. I've blurred out the photos of my kids. The fractal was created with specific colour range in mind to suit the background of the photos...
don't what it would say about me othan than I'm a bit messy/disorganised, and like my kids..;) |

Some of you are VERY icon heavy on the desktop. I can't stand having too many icons on my desktop, that's what the Start menu is for. As you can see, I just keep the esentials on my desktops. |

Jack....
The Object Dock is just a "dock". Not the full featured "windows manager". Its a simple stand alone app.
There is a free version at stardock. Easy to try, and easilly removed if you dont like it.
The thing I like the most about it is you can use regular images for the "icons".
In fact I use .png's with nice full range transparency. I usually create my "icon" images at 256 pixels, or there abouts (Object dock doesnt care what res they are). That way when they expand they stay sharp.
Also, the dock is easy to build. Just drag your short cut to the bar and drop.
Then you can change the "icon" to whatever you like.
Then I hide my desktop icons.
BTW, it works on XP and Vista (I'm running Vista). The only difference is its faster on Vista as its using the video card GPU to handle the transparency shading directly(if you are running Aero).

Here's mine. Like Tom I am a minimalist. ;) Although there is another reason that I use the black background. My screen saver seems to be all messed up. It freezes up my computer from time to time. So I disabled it. Of course that caused the background images on my desktop to often burn into my screen a bit. So I went with black. The strange thing is, lately my "blank" screen saver seems to be kicking in, even though I have the screen saver set to "none". That really confuses me, I don't know what the heck is going on with it.
I too use my desktop as a workspace. I try to keep it relatively tidy, but files do tend to fill the left side of my desktop as I download stuff and move files around. As you can see though, I have a couple of folders that I throw those files into when it gets too cluttered. Every so often I transfer the files in those "clean up" or "junk" folders to my external hard drive to clear up space.

Wizard! your latest animation entry was a stunning acheivment and testament to the capabilities of TrueSpace animation and rendering.:)
And of course to your talents as a storyteller and truly wizard like artistic skills including texturing, lighting, sound production and camera work.
By the way, Did you use mocap or traditional keyframing for the humanoid walking sequences in your animation?
I have an slight inkling I already know the answer.
Here is my desktop and just to let you know I watched and heard your stunning peice of artwork and music about 100 times today,
Thanks again for the inspiration and warning that Magic can be quite dangerous,
Cheers:banana:
