A screen capture of a rotation of a 3D object.
This was done in Photoshop C3 Extended which can import 3D files like 3DS, DAE and OBJ now.
Can basically do anything with the 3D file in Photoshop that you can do with any other 2D.
It doesn't import procedural shaders or color, so it has to be textured. (have another program for baking procs to texture.)
Since Photoshop is tightly integrated with the other packages (Premier, Flash,Illustrator and After Effects) a lot of my 3D video problems are solved, to include layers.
The textures can be changed in PhotoShop to a certain extent. It can also import cameras and lights (plus custom cameras or lights can be made.) |

In case you are wondering, here's what's in the package I just got.
Adobe® Creative Suite® 3 Production Premium software. Combines Adobe After Effects® CS3 Professional, Adobe Premiere® Pro CS3, Photoshop® CS3 Extended, Flash® CS3 Professional, Illustrator® CS3, Soundbooth™ CS3, and Encore® CS3, and also includes Adobe Dynamic Link, Bridge CS3, Device Central CS3, Adobe OnLocation™ CS3 (Windows® only), and Ultra® CS3 (Windows only). (from Adobe's Store Website)
It's about 2000 U.S. with taxes and delivery.
Dynamic link is quite helpful as it updates what one packages does automatically to the other. |

Probably the best place to get an overview is at lynda.com > photoshop>CS3 Extended>3D+Video
There are some free movies to watch. To see them all, one has to subscribe or buy the DVD.
Photoshop CS3 Extended for 3D + Video
with: Chad Perkins
Photoshop CS3 Extended adds revolutionary support for 3D and video files. In Photoshop CS3 Extended for 3D and Video , Chad Perkins teaches users how to take advantage of Photoshop CS3 Extended's 3D capabilities. Chad demonstrates how to manipulate 3D objects, work with video layers, set keyframes, animate Photoshop layers, rotoscope video, and export video and animation directly from Photoshop. Exercise files accompany this training.

Fooling around in Photoshop. Mixed file formats 3DS and OBJ and imported into Photoshop. Changed lights, added transparency and moved the objects around. |

It's about $3000 AUD with taxes and delivery here. Not to mention the resource hog that any of the CS3 apps are. Having said that, I did enjoy using Premiere Elements 2.0 but in the end it was using 4 gbs of space compared to the 500 odd Mb's that Vegas 8 Pro uses. But it's fine for those who need to use it. |

Have had no memory issues with the Suite here. In fact, that's one of the strong suits of it - to exchange information between the programs dynamically.
Some do like Sony Vegas better, but last time I checked Vegas couldn't do what PhotoShop, Illustrator or Flash does. :)
Nor can it import 3D objects as 3D and manipulate them.
Thus, my choice for Adobe. |

Woah James! Is that a fair comparison? There's a huge difference in prices there - the top of the line Sony Vegas package is a quarter of the price of your Adobe kit. |

My point was that Sony Vegas is for video.
Illustrator and Photoshop do a lot of things in 2D art that Sony Vegas does not.
I was just introducing Photoshop CS3 Extended to those who may not know its capabilities.
For a 2D program, one has to admit it is extremely powerful to have video and 3D capability.
After a few years of messing around with amateur programs, picking here and there and trying to making it all work, decided I would get the package that quite a few pros use and save myself from so much program hopping.
So far, I'm happy with my choice. It is complex because it is so powerful, but it's powerful because it is so complex. :) |

LOL - Sounds like my wife!
Fair enough James - there's no doubt that Photoshop CS3 Extended is a wicked bit of soft - it just seemed an odd comparison to make given the vast differences between CS3 and Vegas.
At the end of the day I'm probably just a little jealous that you can afford such nice gear and I can't!!!;):D .
I guess I'll just have to make do with my trusty old trueSpace:) |

I didn't' bring up the comparison between Vegas and the Adobe Creative Suite, TigreStripe did. I just answered him.
The purpose of the thread was to introduce the new features, which I find cool.
But whatever... |

Yeah, sorry `bout that. I should have stated I was comparing Vegas to Premiere. Sony doesn't have a suite that can match Adobe. |
