Well. it seems these threads are quite popular as this is a great mag. Given the cost of getting a copy I thought I might share the contents each month to see if there are any assets on there that can be shared (got some great Mocap stuff for Beta testing once) or to see if it is worth you hunting down a copy.
This month, not so impressive for me (after last months amazing DVD of indpependent CGI movies). Did I also mention that it had a set of Quick Reference cards for the major apps such as Maya, Max, Modo etc. Even Daz studio, Carrara and Bryce made it but sadly no tS.
Anyway, this month has a feature on recreating elements in Houdini, Max, Vue, Bryce and Blender. GDC 08 report, Blenders new movie; Bunny, 10,000 BC feature and Blue Sky's Horton movie.
CD (Boo!) has 15 High Quality models, 50 texture assets and Gnomonolgy video training. Nothing too impressive just light reading this month.
Next month, 50 Kick Ass VFX tips apparently but who knows what else.
Interesting letter in there though from Aidan O'Driscoll (I believe he is a member here) about the Microsoft takeover which simply concludes with 'We offered Caligari the opportunity to comment...but received no reply by press deadline"!
Until next issue (mid April)...:D

Says you will be charged £55 sterling which I guess is $110 ish at the moment. That is for 13 issues delivered up to three weeks earlier then the shops get them.
Claims to save you $108 and the £55 is based on latest exchange rate so might change. |

Hi Paul,
WHO's using my name in vain :) - Yip thats me Id say, have not got that issue yet, not here in news agents in Ireland yet, next day or two I would say.
Interesting - I sent an email to Jim Thacker ages ago about TS and MS when the news broke, didnt expect it to get printed. Hey Paul - did I win anything? :)
I concur - it is a great mag, wouldnt miss it ...

Hi Paul,
Yip - I have found this kind of strange before - you would imagine being next to the UK, we would get the mag pretty much straight away. A crowd called News Brothers / Easons distributes mags here. Maybe it has been in Dublin for a while and we down here on the southern coast in Cork City ( the real capital :) ) dont get it for a while ... not sure!
Cheers

$110 sounds like a good deal for what you get. I'll have to check it out; thanks! :)

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only person in Ireland who hasn't got this issue yet. It seems to be running late this time, I expected it a week back. Hopefully it will appear soon. |

Hi Paul,
Finally got edition 103, read my exceptional letter, makes the magazine :)
I have to say I find it a great edition with load of tutes for Bryce ( which is cheap ) - a nice Blender tute for a large explosion ( blender is free ). Also nice feature on the new blender community movie "Big Buck Bunny".
As I also own Lightwave 9 - the article on the new beta 9.5 is VERY interesting.
"Newtek has announced a major update to Lightwave 3D - Ver 9.5 of the software, which should be in open beta by the time you read this ( it is ), it includes overhauls to the programs aging character toolset and adds a complete new hair and fur solution."
I wrote a message at the Luxology forums re all the new goodies in 9.5:
http://forums.luxology.com/discussion/topic.aspx?id=25175
Their I have done it now - this message will probably be scrubbed shortly ( although others have discussed Carrara here at length ). Only go to that message if you happen - like me - to have OR are interested in Lightwave OR all things 3D in general :). The beta program is free to registered users and the up and coming update is free to v9 owners.
Cheers

Finally picked up this issue today. I find it an all round good issue too, and the 50 textures are welcome on the CD, though the CD itself is not, I was hoping the mag had gone DVD now.
Anyway, without wanting to start a debate, I just want to say I'm very disappointed to see that for the second issue running, Caligari has been quiet and this time to the offical 3D industry itself. That's the second time 3D World has asked Caligari for a statement regarding the buyout by Microsoft and that's the second time that request went unanswered. That doesn't sound good to me and I can honestly say that the new and very much unwelcome silence here, even to the 3D community in general, is eroding my faith in TrueSpace. I have one project well underway in TrueSpace which I am still working on, but if things don't improve and we users are left in the dark, it may very well be my last TrueSpace project.
Come on, Caligari, it's gone on way too long now. It's almost as bad as the television show, Lost! A statement of some sort is long overdue.

Some of Roman's comments were for April Fools but he did respond here about TS 7.6.
What else do you want him to say?

Frootee,
Issue 102 hit the American shelves a week ago. So we have 2-3 more weeks to go. |

There is the statement from Roman and his recent post where he promises DX11 (april fool?) will not delay tS7.6.
As for the gaps, you can either fill them with paranoia and speculation or optimism and hope...up to you really.
Personally, I have not exhausted tS at all and it will last me for many years even as it is. I do hope for better skin and fur 9see my other post) but I am not worried about the silence.
Maybe you will be proven right and I will have egg on my face but I remain hopeful that wonderful things will arrive once the veil of privacy/NDA is lifted.
I really cannot understand why you need any sort of promise of the future of tS to enable you to make projects now. If they can be output in a standard format: Jpeg, Avi etc, then what does it matter?
You can always change software for your next project if Caligari does take a route you don't like.
Simply put, life is too short to wait...you could be doing so much productive stuff now! |
