Just wondering if anybody has had any success EXPORTING collada dae to any of the major 3d programs such as max, maya, xsi or cinema4d? I tried exporting the rigged tank girl to xsi and all I get are errors. Is there a correct procedure for exporting rigged characters in collada? I love how easy it is to rig, weight paint, set joint limits in truespace and would like to export rigged characters successfully. To be able to do this would really be great. Thanks much for any info.

I am having great success with the ts collada export with ultimate unwrap 3d. It seems ultimate unwrap 3d is the only tool that understands the ts collada :) But the great thing is once you get it into ultimate unwrap they have tons of export formats available (you download the export plugins for free from their page) and you should be able to get your truespace model into pretty much any application.

Ultimate unwrap pro is 60 dollars and worth every penny.

Interesting observation 3Dfrog. Does it remember all the bones and skeleton information? Will it export to FBX format?

Export to XSI should work fine. What export options are you using Jhowell? Also have you tried to export the whole scene instead of just an object?

If you go into the link editor and go up a level so you can select the scene brick, you can then save the entire scene (lights, cameras, etc.) into a Collada scene file.

Yes it exports fbx. I just tried going into maya ple with it and it went in. The interpolation of the animation was screwy, but you can probably fix that, i just dont understand maya. The fbx crashed max 8. I haven't tried messing with all the settings yet. What app do you want to get fbx into?

Hi All, thanks for your great posts on my collada problem. I investigated many older forum posts and did a bunch of google searches too. I tried exporting to xsi, maya learning edition and an older version of max I have that has been upgraded to the newest max collada importer. If Iam really lucky i would occasionally get a low res mesh from truespace to maya. But forget animations or rigs etc. I tried the exporting the whole scene as was suggested too. I honesty think that 3dfrog has the answer for now as I found some google searches saying the same thing 3dfrog mentioned which is ... ultimate unwrap 3d seems to be the best way work around for now .... So, I will try that out next and let you know. :)

P.S. download 5 truepace rigged characters here (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=5241)

Shouldn't need a workaround. TrueSpace's Collada exporter is a complete implementation according to the Collada standard. So unless there's a problem with the collada importers in the other apps, it's a problem that needs to be tracked down and fixed.

Only a few applications understand polygons with holes inside collada file format. Try using different settings for exporting exporting - triangulate polygons with holes should work for max/maya, export as triangles should work i think for all apps.

3D Frog, I was wondering about interchanging animation and/or figure setups between tS and Carrara - Carrara has FBX import export.

The unwrap program you mention seems to be one of the few that imports collada (while a bunch of programs only export to it - including tS). The u/v tools may well be useful but I'm more interested in a conversion utility!! :)

(I've tried downloading the demo of ultimate unwrap 3d without much success. Seems to keep dropping out and it wouldn't let me use a download manager.)
