Heh. It's more for the international labour movement so union's around the world pretty much have some kind of event. Communist groups and anarhcists generally like to strut their stuff as well. It's now know much around America and maybe Canada as over there the three words are usually considered foul. :) |

I'd prefer the more ancient practice of watching the maidens dancing around the maypole rather than watching trucks loaded with missles drive by, but maybe that's just me.

Yeah, May Day (May 1) got a bad reputation back in the day of the Soviet Union when they paraded their missiles and troops in a show of force.
However, these days it's equivalent to the U.S. Labor Day in September.
You are not right James. Soviet Union never made military parades first of May. It called Day of Workers Solidarity. Same as Prodigy has in Uruguay. And roots of this holiday go to 1st of May 1886 then US workers requested 8 hours working day. They were shooted up if I'm not mistaken.
I can not give exact list, but many contries around the globe and in Europe have public holiday this date. Switzerland, Poland, Slovenia, Sweden, Finland, Israel, Russia etc. for example. And also here in Cyprus:D
Soviet Union had two military parades - 7th of November (anniversary of socialist revolution) and 9th of May - anniversary of Two World War end. This parade will be renewed In Russia in full this year. I mean with missiles and troops. But I think it is better to demonstrate missiles and not use them then hide and use. We lost more the 20 millions people that war...
Happy Workers Day Prodigy !!! |

Sorry if I offended anyone about May Day. I removed my posts.
I must have faulty memory - or perhaps viewed as one of those annoying Americans. (shrugs) |

No maypole dancing for you!
Mayday in much of Europe was traditionally a Spring/fertility celebration. (Maidens dancing around a big pole? How Freudian is that!?). Back in 'the good ole days' with most folk living in the country and dependant on a good spring for healthy crops and livestock they figured a bit of dancing and celebrating could very well encourage a better spring - and even if it didn't at least everyone had a good time!
After the industrial revolution and the rise of trade unionism - when most people had moved to the cities the celebration changed in some places - where they used to celebrate the productivity of the Earth and Nature they instead celebrated the productivity of the workers.
Any excuse for a knees-up, I'd say - and nothing wrong with that!!:D
Happy Mayday everyone. |

No offence taken here either - and for what it's worth I don't think Americans have any ability to be any more annoying than anyone else! We're all from the same planet and it doesn't matter who you are, there's bound to be someone somewhere choosing to be annoyed about you.:D |
