I was looking for a quick and easy terrain creator. I need to make some mountains and land for the camera to fly through...is there one around that is free? |

What version of truespace do you have?
If you have 7.5 you could use the displacement mapping to do it.
You could always download bryce and export the terrain from it to truespace.
edit: truescape used to be available, but i'm not sure it is now, with the pak going (it was on the DePak) |

I am using 6.6. I saw this post :

they talk about tsxtruder or something? Maybe that would work? |

I use height fields from Terragen, Vue and Mojoworld depending on exactly what I need.
I've not used it for a long time but there is a free version of Terragen available. |

Can Terragen export into TS so I can do a camera fly-through? |

TSXtruder HERE (http://www.bendys.com/3d/tsxtruder/tsxtruder.html)
Coolpowers Suite HERE (http://sourceforge.net/projects/freecp/) (includes displacedatplace.tsx, a height-field generator)
Terragen HERE (http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/) |

You can also find Bryce 5.5 for free out there. It exports .obj files, but your better off using height maps if your using dribble. |

I guess you mean using a greyscale dem image as a displacement map. I've been messing with this myself, if you are trying to create an immersive landscape (ie. seems like horizon to horizon) the render time in dribble can be big. Also if you want to place objects in the environment your realtime view is a flat plane so figuring out where to put things in the z axis is a bit hit and miss. Can be done of course but there are pitfalls! |

The render time in dribble for displacements is negligible from my tests, it's one of it's strengths. If your render times are blowing out, make sure you're not using a regular plane for the height-map object as they are two-sided (use a nurbs plane instead).
Also remember to lower the max-depth in your raytrace settings (right-click on the green "enable raytracing" icon) to two. You should get into the habit of doing this as soon as you start a new truespace scene.
If your worried about the real-time representation, you could use a box as a proxy (you should be doing this anyway for large scenes), and use global replace when it's time to render.
Or you could export a low res copy of the terrain in question from bryce and use this for composition.
It can take a couple of go's to get the displacement setting right for your object, but you can do this in a small viewport to avoid long renders. No program will represent millions of poly's in real-time very well (except zbrush), so these methods above will work for vray too. |

Hmmm... nurbs plane you say. Doh!
I've been using the top face of a cube. If there really is a substantial time saving then the implication would be that nurbs objects may always be the best solution for displacement mapping. Yes - no?
---------------
BTW if you are into greyscale landscape maps here is a marvellous free app. Microdem.
http://www.usna.edu/Users/oceano/pguth/website/microdemdown.htm
It lets you do all kinds of mapping operations as well as convert dems (digital elevation models) into coloured and greyscale image files. |

The top of a box should be fine.
I should also have added that when using a nurbs plane, the texture maps seem to be mirrored at rendertime, so you'll need to take this into account. This seems to be a dribble bug, as lightworks is fine. |

The Vue Personal Learning Editon offers some nice avenues. It's the Infinite version of Vue, but while you're learning, you can utilize some of its nice features to set up landscapes, export objects and other fine attributes. Huge download btw - it's a powerful program. |
