I have looked a long time for a animated gif maker that could make hundreds or thousands of rendered files as a gif animation properly. Animated gif images are basically an image file that can displayed super quickly on any website. However, most gif movie makers are really bad and can only make a few dozen image clips in to an anmated movie gif. Showing gif animations sometimes is easier on your web page rather than wmv or quicktime files. As it is immediate and requires no extra downloads from the person viewing the web page. Even people with very slow modems can display animated gifs easily on their browsers. And like any image this gif anim file can be right clicked and saved like any image file. Cooool! Anyway, GIF MOVIE GEAR does a great job. See my 4000 frame render made in to a animated gif image below....

I would have thought that the biggest problem with gifs is the 256 col limit. Also when assembling animated gifs I believe that the 256 colour rule applies across all the frames in the image - that is the same palette used for the first image, the last image and all the ones in between is the same. You might get away with it in greyscale.

Of course I could be wrong. ;)

Yes, GIFS and the 256 color limit have always been a huge problem. That is why I have never given it much thought until I came across GIF MOVIE GEAR. It does an incredible job of maximizing the 256 colors. As you can see by my rendered animated gif below it does work. That was 4000 rendered real time display frames reduced in GIF MOVIE GEAR to 100 frames then saved as 15/100th second speed gif. All in a couple minutes. No other program I have found can do it like this and with this quality. Point is, this is not for showing your best work or showing the best animations. This is for quick postings on websites and blogs and forums a quick example of rendered animations. Especially when you cant use wmv or quick time movies. Being that it can handle and reduce thousands of rendered real times frames in to a gif is pretty impressive. :)
