I am considering the upgrade because I have quite a few old scenes from 5.0-6.6 that I would like to update. Does the newest versions like 7.0 play well with them? Is it simply a matter of opening them in the new version and rendering away?

Yup, mostly.

I am updating my Buddy World concept started 8 years ago using tS2 I believe. I can open the scenes in ts7.51 quite happily and I even tried a few in 7.6. I did lose the odd deformation from version 6 projects but that was a bug I believe that reset them in that version if you did not finalise the deformation. Other than that, no problems at all so far.

The only real problem is the annoying realisation that your skills have developed and the old stuff now looks rubbish...;)

Of course, opening and rendering away would be a real shame given the power of the new renderer, but you would be suprised how many old scenes look so much better by simply adding HDRI.
