I posted in the Announcements about this one, but that takes moderator approval to show up so no sign of that yet hehe.

Anyway as the thread says, we're in a position to release this latest course for free. I learned a lot myself from seeing Jack work, so I think this should be a great course.

If you don't own tS7.5, this will be a glimpse at how it works (and you can follow along and try things for yourself with the trial version too).

HTH!

Downloading now. Looking forward to watching this; Jack knows his stuff, especially workspace stuff...:D

Let's hope this encourages more to buy tS7.6 and that it heralds the start of more free downloads...;)

Thanks Jack and Caligari! A free tutorial is always welcome and anything that helps me get to know Workspace and organic modelling better can have the best seat in front of the fire as well!

Downloading as i type, can't wait to see it.

Thanks guys! :D

I still have part 2 and 3 to do, so if you guys have any feedback that you think will improve the future parts let me know. Also let me know if you get stuck anywhere so I can help out. ;)

@ Justin, it's a lot like your tutorials. We work a lot alike, and I incorporated some of your workflows as well. :) Just wish I could crank them out as fast as you do!

Indeed, a very helpful course that looks like 7.51 instead of 7.0 :)

Can't wait for the other parts of the course.

The only observation I had, is that there was no mention of saving the scene as you went along.

I save about 10 billions versions of scenes I do, but maybe I'm just paranoid. :D

Thanks for doing the course and a nice speaking voice you have.

Thanks James! :D

I've been one to say that model side doesn't promote good workflows but it does teach you to save a lot.... :p

Originally I had planned to show the saving out to the library at the end of each section, but when I realized how much I needed to time compress the course to get other content in, those extra sections on saving were the first to be cut. :(

As far as my personal experience with saving while working goes, I find with Workspace that I save the scene much less because it is very stable for me and I don't worry about the program crashing. But for some projects it's very useful to drop periodic scene files in the library I set up for the project. And in some directories I'll have something like 50 different versions of the same object saved out... lol.

It's always important to save before doing anything involving using the bridge (model side)... Particularly make sure you turn off the mirror and SDS before making any changes to a Workspace model on Model side since using the tools on model side will flatten the object history and freeze any active mesh modifiers permanently into the mesh.

@ Justin: Thanks! I really appreciate that! :D

BTW, I've got a solution now to the disappearing desktop panel that was plaguing you previously: with the settings tab active click on hammer and wrench icon the upper left of the stack and select "Open desktop preferences" from the pop-up menu. I think that feature was added in the 7.51 patch, but it's definitely useful for those times when you close the desktop preferences panel and it doesn't automatically come up anymore.

I just went through your part one tutorial, and will go through it a second time - most likely tomorrow. I tend to watch twice and follow along once... My granddad was a Mason and he always measured twice and cut once. ;)

I definitely recommend working the project along with the video, so that you get practical experience as well as the theory.

Following along with Kary Ohman in his video course
http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/NewCharacterModeling.asp?Cate=Training&SubCate=Master
and building the character as he built it was a big help for me in developing my modeling skills.

Nice tutorial Jack I am looking forward to following it,as it happens I've just ordered an extra gig of ram to give TS7.51 and Vista bit more poke.

Thanks

Nice bonus! Thanks Jack and Caligari! I've downloaded the course but have yet to dive in - I suspect the plans I had for later tonight have just been changed!!;)

I use the workspace a lot but still tend to model in model side, mostly because I'm so accustomed to the conventions over there and I like the way model side responds when you delete vertices - workspace responds quite differently so seeing your work flow will be invaluable!

This will help to keep folk occupied until tS 7.6 is released! Yay!

This clearly deserves a bunch of bananas

Thanks a lot, Jack, I just downloaded it and it looks extremely helpful. Each time I use Workspace I like it more and your tutorial is very timely. What better than to learn from the master!

Also thanks to Caligari to making it available.

Jack, I like your tutorial style very much.

You have found the right rythm : not too slow, not too fast. Above all, you explain in depth what you are doing and teach the subtlities of Workspace interface all along the way.

A very good tutorial indeed :)

Thanks Jack for this timely course and I sense a very wise strategic move by Roman and Caligari to release it for free. Many, like myself continue to use the model side to model, unaware of the potential of the workspace. And as has been said before a good bridge into tS7.6 workspace, (I anticipate!).

Thanks very much, this gesture is greatly appreciated!

This is the kind of tutorial that make life so much simpler.

I'm surprised no one is giving a critique to help you out. Here are a couple quick observations.

You and I work in a similar fashion except your wayyyyy better. I too stick to WorkSpace for all my work because the tools that are there work great. A pity you had to go to Modeler for that one example of setting object resolution.

The sound volume between each section changed sometimes and I found myself adjusting the volume.

I wonder why you didn't mention the "arrange" function for bringing out the hidden objects in the LE. If they overlap this fixes it very quickly.

I believe you showed the bevel tool (around the eye?) but too briefly. Not much of an explanation.

You DID show how to save a scene in one part.

I like how you mixed levels of experience in the tutorial. So everyone can get some useful information out of it.

There was one part were you were explaining a procedure and the explanation was so long it sounded like you would run out of breath and start choking. I was cheering you on...:D

Thank you very much Jack. I'm working too much right now

to be able to get into it, but summer is coming soon!

Then the work will be scarce and I will have time to

study. It's very kind of you to release this for free.

You guys are definitely welcome! And thanks again for the great response! :jumpy:

@Steinie, thank you for the critique. :)

I agree, it's annoying that the texture resolution setting is on model side, but not much I can do about that....

After I did the section on the eye I had this nagging feeling that I may not have covered the bevel tool in the earlier chapters like I thought I did. I'll make sure to spend extra time on it in part 2. :o

Hmm... think I just completely spaced on the "arrange" menu option. Infact don't think I covered the LE drop down menu at all... I can probably work that in one of the future parts... maybe in a section on real time materials...

There were definitely some issues with the volume, and it was something I planned to fix later, but I ran out of time. You can tell too each time I upgraded my audio hardware and software. The early videos were done with out a mic pre-amp using the onboard sound card and Camtasia Studio (ick!). Then around chapter 2, I got a mic preamp and Tracktion 3, and by the time chapter 3 happened, I added the Echo MiaMidi soundcard, a pair of studio monitors, and moved the sequencing to Vegas. I've just upgraded to Cakewalk Sonar 7, so I'll likely be using that and Vegas to produce part 2. ;) Just a heads up for you guys using Vegas, Cakewalk has a competitive upgrade option for Sonar 7 Producer Edition going for $350 after you enter in your competitive upgrade code -- that's a really sweet deal!

Yup definitely running out of breath! In some of the later chapters I made a point to edit out the gasps for air before rendering out the video! :D

@CdeB, I agree. It was a surprise to me when I found out that the course was going to be released for free, but I think it's a great idea. Roman needs to migrate the userbase onto the new architecture (Workspace) before 8.0 is released and this course should hopefully help a lot of the users to begin that transition. :)

Great work Jack. Fascinating to see someone who knows TS well, working in close up. Almost makes me wish I did my modeling in TS and not silo ;)

Bravo Sir.
