I am just wondering if there is a way to render just the highlights in TS? Does it support this?

On the model side of tS7.51, you can export layers into a psd file with lightworks and get several parameters including channels. The layers support includes specular. I suppose you could weasel out highlights adapting the rgb channels.

Workspace side, dunno - .

I did a short series in the Blog section about PSD layers in trueSpace Model side.

Should be nine parts to the series, this is part IV, I think.

Edit: forgot about the multipass rendering course by Marcel Barthel

Alternatively, the iPak for tS6 will do the same thing if you don't have access to tS7.

I was just trying to figure out a way to render just shadows on workspace side yesterday. I couldn't find a way, so I doubt there is a way to render just specular on workspace side either. Unfortunately my workspace animation breaks apart on model side so that was a no go either. Oh well, I finished my project anyway :)

Multipass rendering is supported via Lightworks, which renders from the Model side only. You can split that up in lots of different ways, separate channels for shadows and specular are possible there.

There is no multipass rendering direct from workspace though (which only uses the real-time engine or V-Ray).

You may be able to 'fake' it without too much difficulty (although I've not tried this). First render to file your animation to create a colour version. Then re-render the animation but before doing so, paint everything with a glossy totally black material.

In theory this would give you an animated sequence showing nothing but the highlights which you could then combine with your first animation run and adjust the highlights accordingly by adjusting your blend levels.

Note that this will only give highlights matching the colour of your lights but (again in theory, I've not tried this at all) should give you greater control over highlights than you would otherwise have.

You beat me to it wizard. :)

I know of a way to get highlight both on model side and workspace. When playing around with different ways to render cel-shading I found you could render out separate channels with out the use of the PSD output(mainly highlights, and color). I don't know what your going to use this for but I used this to composite in Paint Shop Pro. So here's how to do it.

First turn off the grid and set the background color to Black(RGB 0,0,0). Then in the material editor set up the Reflectance. If your going to use the phong shader set Lum and Dif to 0. Then you can set the Shn , Spc, and specular color to what you like. In the Color panel set that to Black(RGB 0,0,0). Then render to file. Now you have just the highlights and you can composite it in a Photo editing program by setting this layer to Hard Light. Here are some pix of the setup and the render from Workspace. (I setup the materials on the Model side but they will transfer over to the Workspace. I just like using Model side. :))

I am using TS 6.6, so I guess I will have to try the iPak and hope it does it.

If you are using 6.6 then the method suggested by Liger ZERO and myself will definitely work for highlights

Try doing this with a single still image until you get the idea then it's a simple matter to apply it to your animation.

I've used a similar technique to simulate foggy effects too as well as highlights

Photoshop can make a big difference. :)

Below is an example exporting the lights out of a lightworks render. Since the lights can be adjusted...

Use the adjustment > exposure tool in Photoshop. The image shows the before and after, adjusting the infinite lights in photoshop. This was done just by moving one slider bar in photoshop for each light, after the infinite light layer(s) were selected.

Doing the test now with all black and it looks like a lot of hotspots on the planet, which is unfortunate. I am going to have to see what the post compositing will do for it.
