Going through some video tutorials in Zbrush on topology. I was hoping for an easy button.

Well, there are none!

Topology done well in Zbrush is edge modeling (sort of, but the effects are the same)

Sure, I can model an entire figure from a sphere, but to get dead on accurate topology, I have to do it old fashion way of edge modeling!

(slinks back and re-examines Jack Edward's tutorial on the fish)

I don't have Zbrush, but in Silo that's the same workflow I like to use for organics. Sculpt first, then retopologize the mesh (trace over the model). That allows me to first focus solely on form without worrying about poly count or edge flow. Then when retopologizing I can focus solely on mesh density and edge flow without worrying about the form. Being able to focus my concentration on one thing at a time has allowed me to produce better looking and much cleaner meshes. I've always had a one track mind. I can't focus on more than one thing at a time. So this method fits me well. :)

You're right though, either way it's going to take the same amount of time and work. I remember before I got into 3d thinking that the computer did most of the work. Then I found out that the computer is just a tool, the artist still needs to do a lot of work. At least it's fun work though. :)

It may be important to remind people once in a while that things do take work. Still, I am one of those people who think any difficult thing should be made easier. Re-topolising for example, will someday be automatic or unnecessary, and I think that is great. Computers have allowed groups of people who once had to work in teams to create one person's vision to work independently on their own visions. I appreciate the skill involved in art; my traditional skills are way beyond my cg skills. But I won't be complaining when the day comes that a piece of software can turn my 2D pencil sketch into an accurately modeled and rigged mesh, or someone invents a hardware helmet that just lets me imagine stuff into being. There will always be work to be done. Making it easier and quicker to do just lets you do more of it.
