Hello,
i have to render realistic diamonds. I saw some fantastic ones made by Teffo or Rayman in the forum. I play with the fresnel and glass material (in lightworks and vray) but i cannot achieve a realistic looking gem. Any advice ? Does Jewel space 3D by caligari still exist ?
thank you

Hi ! My renders with diamonds came from a free render engine called Kerkythea !
They have the best diamond materials and I used unbiased render
method MLT bpt !
You can also render with dispersion in Kerkythea which ads to the realism
of your diamond colors....

If you have any mopre questions please ask .... I can see if I can help you !;)

Just a quick question then on your workflow rayman.... Do you model in TS, export OBJ to KT? |

There is a gem set in shader lab I think that where it came from. It's not bad for gems. A quick render on some primitive cones. |

Yes !
Its actually easier to setup stills in Kerkythea then it is in TS !
You have over 20 presets for your renders to choose from.....
you dont have to use them though !;)
Import your object into Kerky...setup your light or use a global(HDRI) swap your material on it..
choose camera position and hit render... !
Heres the getting started tutorial !
VERY SIMPLE !:p

(PS Jack wants to make an exporter for TS soon !) |

Don't forget that realistic gems don't just need a good material, they also need a good environment, and good lighting.
A large part of what makes a gem look gem-like is what it reflects and refracts, which is both its surroundings (the environment) and the lights. Which is why gems are so often displayed in locations with many lights from different locations, so they keep catching light and sparkling.
Generally, even the best material when placed on an object alone in a space with one light won't come out looking its best, so be sure to account for the interaction with scene and lighting when working with your gems.
HTH!

It's a bit of vaporware at the moment. :o The modeling course ate up all my time for a while there, but I've most of the planning done. I'm fairly sure I've got the geometry exporting figured out, so it's mainly a matter of figuring out how to integrate with the Material Editor.
I'll work on it some today after I finish up some D3D materials for something else.
I agree with Rayman though, Kerkythea produces better glass type materials than VRay or Lightworks. You'll need the chromatic dispersion features for doing gems anyway, and I think Kerkythea is the only renderer with that out right now...
I also completely agree with Tom. What he said is true for shiny metals and glossy paintjobs as well. |

Virtual Light does dispersion. I think some of the shaderlab or maybe shader magic shaders can do this too to some extent, or at least fake it. Shade 8 and indigo can do this, and I think many other renderers like mental ray would have this feature too, but maybe called something else (like aberration).
I imagine you could fake it using reflection maps as well.
I've seen realistic gems being done for years, but kerkythea definitely seems to do a nice job. And it's free, you can't beat that. |

I stand corrected. :)
Also, something not often discussed, is that there are a lot of times when faked is easier and looks better artistically than the real thing. ;)
I do have to admit to being very impressed with the way Kerkythea renders glass and gem type materials. |

Works in model side with lightworks render. |

If you right-click on the reflectance panel it will be on the right side of the shader's pop-up.
One of tom's shaders (iridescence) is what I was thinking of, but this may be better for pearl or soap bubble materials (dispersion is a different effect that looks similar). You can get it here (http://www.tmgcgart.com/ShaderLab/html/tg_pack_3_pg2.htm#TGIridescenceRampGradient). |
