Wow! I love my Truespace but that blender film is absolutely the best I have seen in a long long time. Top 7 blender artist did that. And to think blender is free.... :o

From their website ...

How it started

As a follow-up to the successful project Orange’s “Elephants Dream”, the Blender Foundation initiated another open movie project. Again a small team (7) of the best 3D artists and developers in the Blender community have been invited to come together to work in Amsterdam from October 2007 until April 2008 on completing a short 3D animation movie. The team members will get a great studio facility and housing in Amsterdam, all travel costs reimbursed, and a fee sufficient to cover all expenses during the period.

The creative concept of “Peach” was completely different as for “Orange”. This time it is “funny and furry”!

The Blender Foundation and Blender community have been the main financiers for Peach. As for the previous open movie, a pre-sale campaign to purchase the DVD set in advance will be organized.

Call me stupid, but how come Blender has loads of stuff we don't, like fluids nd cloth, nd its all open source? Can't we just whack it all into trueSpace? Must be some legal reasons :( . Anyone tried begging to Mr. Blender?

One word: GPL.

Blender is protected by GPL so you can't simply take code from it and put it in your product without making your product GPL. And when you think about it, that is fair - why should you be able to take something from someone without giving back?

On the subject of the movie, I have seen it and I think it has the same problem as the previous movie, Elephants Dream: it shows that Blender is a very powerful tool but it also proves that the story is more important. And the story for both Blender movies is weak. The Bucks bunny story is much better than the elephant dream story but it is still not good. I guess it is supposed to be funny but it didn't work on me.

There's nothing stopping someone from turning Blender's features into plug-ins, Roadkill being an example. The plug-ins wouldn't even have to be free, as long as the source code shipped with the product.

The Blender foundation are doing an amazing job marketing their product.

Sorry transient, but I think you are wrong. The GPL don't allow you to do this. For you to be able to do that, you need to use software that have the LGPL licens (library or lesser GPL).

Roadkill, wich uses the Blender code for LSCM and ABF, is also available as a Maya Plugin. And i know of other freeware plugins for other software that uses Code from GPL projects.

From what i know that is not allowed is to incorporate this code directly into a commercial application. And also the plugin version has to be free plus the source must be provided, and the original source must be namend too.

But that's the problem, nobody can be sure what is allowed and what not. Gnu GPL, Creative Common, BSD, they all have a big problem. Normal people are never able to understand what is written there. I always fear to loose the control over what i publish when i would use one of them. That's why i normally just rely at my very own permissions for my own creations. Be it my graphics or my games and apps.

LOL we seem to need a lawyer for this one.....

from what I understand you could use the code from a GPL or LGPL product and use it to create a plugin. As stated previously the plugin would have to be released under the terms of the same open source license (GPL, LGPL, etc). This would mean that the plugin created would have to offer the source to the end consumer and the source would have to include the "hook" into the commercial program. Another way of stating this is that there would be no proprietary code outside of the product you are releasing for which you did not provide the source.

Also, many open source licenses do not prohibit you from charging for your work. The freedom of open source is the freedom to use the product as you see fit for your purposes. You can modify the code as you see fit and redistribute it as long as you are honourable and properly cite the source. Each of the open source licenses have their own conditions for what you are required to do before you redistribute product so read this part of the license carefully.
