Many of you who know me ... are well aware that I´m a nurbs fan !
Here is a review and a well made intro into nurbs modeling and
Moi 3d ( my favorite pet ..)
SO NURBS ARE NOT DEAD !
I´d like to see strong nurbs in TS 8 and the articel over a few pages
points out pretty well why !:D

It would be cool if there was a tsx for directly importing .3dm or .igs files, as Dribble can natively render nurbs objects. Considering Dribble's speed (especially with 4x anti-aliasing) and quality, it would be an affordable option for designers wanting a fast beauty render.
Also moi shares the ts ideal of artist-friendly interfaces, so it would be a nice fit imo.
An affordable version of 6.6 "cad edition" with 3delight rendering and nurbs import would be a great option for moi users. It would also give Rhino users another option too.
Carrara has the ability to import .igs files, I believe, so the idea isn't really that far out of left field. |

The problem with NURBS support is that the file formats are massively complicated. You pretty much have to use an existing NURBS library, unless you happen to have an engineering team dedicated to NURBS coding, and the commercial libraries are expensive.
Still, it would be nice. As you say, dribble/3Delight supports NURBS, and most Renderman renderers typically prefer such higher order surfaces over polygons. |

Couldn't you just use opennurbs (http://www.opennurbs.org/) considering that file import, not full-blown modeling tools, is what's needed (at least for moi and rhino models)?
Keep in mind that I'm no coder so I have no idea what's required to make a tsx plug-in for truespace, I'm just curious. |

I actually forgot about that, which is great for 3DM support. But you mentioned IGES, which is a whole 'nother ballgame :) |

IGES is already supported in conversion pack which can be used on modelside..but it may only work with when exported from certain programs.. |

3dm would be cool because we could work with the nurbs tools in
Ts too !

I was hoping you wouldn't realize that, but you can't blame me for trying.;)
So does this make my idea more plausible, or would a moi-truespace link still be too much of a hassle? |

Here's a quick demo of Moi and trueSpace using IGS import.
I often use trueSpace Bend tool on NURBS as Moi doesn't have them yet.
These programs work great together! |

That's cool. Unfortunately the conversion pack is 200 bucks, the same as moi, but it's still good to see it's possible. |

this video shows fantasticaly how easy and fast the workflow is !
Its much faster then wjhat you could do with polys in the same time !
Iges support is wonderfull but I would love .3dm !
That opens a whole new world !;)

There's an interesting site I recently found called fundable (http://www.fundable.com/). I know emmanuel proposed something similar with vecad a while back.
I'm nor sure how viable this is for software programming, but when you think of how many "wouldn't it be cool if...." threads you see regarding 3d applications, especially with regards to plug-ins and data transfer, it could make sense.
If some tsx guru could propose and estimated cost of making a .3dm plug-in for tS, the ransom method might work. I know I would pledge a reasonable amount for it. |

Yes no doubt !
its not that i want things for free !
I would pay money for a Truespace - 3dm importer if nurbs
were to be well implemented into TS 8 !
Plus I already said that it would be no problem to fund a Kerkythea exporter
at some rate !

Isn't Jack looking into making a Kerkythea exporter in the future?
We also need a programmer to write code for dynamic hair in Dribble.
Hopefully Simon converts Dribble to workSpace side.
I would certainly help fund these projects. |
