WOW!
Long story and weekend short I have lost a drive. :(
Though I have been unable to find any software that will get me the actual folder structure that was on the drive I have found a few that will find files themselves.
Though I still hope to find the actually folders on this puppy, just getting the TS .scn files would help so much.
So far the apps I am using do not see .scn files and or offer a way to add custom files extensions to the list of files they look for.
Anyone aware of any app out there that can recover files and would find .scn files ? |

Uhh, hates that.
this is the best program I could find that actually did what you want when I lost like my 10 images of Windows, nightmare as now ;)
http://www.active-undelete.com/
It's not free but I still recomend it if you really needs things back.
Another trick that is very good, but failed in that case, is to attach the drive to another XP, if it's laptop you get a ultrabay and pop the lost disk into it. if Xp can't recover most things wount, at least most of the times you're able to backup most of files before losing it all together.
I've never done this with a Big drive workstation etc. but there are cheap usb cables that can read both sata and normal drives, that is they got 2 different mounts? I've got no words for this ;) hope you understands what I mean.
Anyway good luck, last resort but that is very expensive and I've only done it once at work is to send the disk to proffessionals, they in their turn if they cant can send it to real labs, now this costs and is probably not worth it!?

And for the future, make a backup. External HDD's aren't this expensive anymore. And a double dataset is sometimes important as you find out at the moment ;) |

I think I used Stellar.Phoenix.Access.Recovery.v2.0 when mine packed in
However (having experience in hard drive recovery), the best way to do it is use Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) freely available and boot up before startup, you can then clone your hard drive to the new one, retaining all files (hopefully) and the original OS, It worked for my friends laptop. The tricky thing for me was that because it was a laptop I had to clone his hard drive to a USB hard drive (takes ages) and then back again, but you should be able to plug both Hard Drives into your motherboard and clone one to the other (make sure you select the right one as you dont wanna clone your new one onto the old one lol), PM me if you need anymore help id be happy to help.
Losing a Hard Drive is so painful! |

Well Jim....
Since I 'helped' in getting you that prize in the Game Space Shoot-out some time back I guess we're even! :)
I have tired all the apps here and a few others all gathering different results.
The app you listed here has gotten me almost all I needed...the folders! Haveing 500 'home.html' files does not really help me if you know what I mean. I needed/need folders with names/ structure intact.
Ah of course appears almost all my client work is 100% intact but some of my Personal 'Tommy Rockix' stuff got whacked in the process. Fortunately between what it looks like I will be able to get from this software coupled with a backup I had of this data that was not super out of date I will be able to recover from that, quicker than I thought.
The loss was going to really set back the release of the first book in our series and that was really starting to bring me down.
Jim..all of you, I thank you.
I swear to learn my lesson.
PS
Drive was a external jobber, i know I know...my first mistake.
PSS
This whole mess got me to get off my butt and get a new PC anyway, very happy with it. The increased performance has already paid off letting me to short animation tests that my 'old' PC , bless it, would / was taking for every to grind through. Stay tuned!!
Thank you again. |

Ha ha well yes and no Vinny,I used some of your method which well was'nt bad and I thought it worthy of dubbing it "The Vinny Method" so in fact twas me that actually named it in your honour. As I was second runner up I can forgive you for helping/coaching the winner ;)
Post# 2 http://forums.caligari.com/gamespace/showthread.php?t=1908&highlight=vinny+method
Remember this? Vinny Method was actually coined as Vinny Technique.

I agree..and thank you
After my successful adventure with File scavenger I figure what the heck and had another pass at the disk after saving all the data found from Scavenger.
And lo and behold I got even more goodies sans a proper folder name here and there.
Reagardless between these two apps I think i am back in business!
Thank you all again!:jumpy: |

It really is amazing.
Whatever the heck happened to my drive took literally 1 second to mash over 100 gig of data!
Once the dust settles I may look into all further but none the less the speed with which all this occured is almost too much to comprehend. |
