Having read another software's forum, I was pondering the idea of creating an online trueSpace magazine.
Of course, it would be unofficial.
There are some things I would like to clarify before I started though.
Would I be allowed to quote announcements, topics, tricks and tips from the Caligari forum with the users submission as an entry into the magazine?
I know that some forums are particularly touchy about this, even with the user's permission.
What type of topics would people like to see?
Some ideas:
Caligari Announcements
Tips and Tricks
Contest Winners
Profile of users regardless of talent level, personal interest stories (nothing too personal though - just in regards to 3D history and usage)
Scripting Examplesetc.
Let me know, I think it's worth having a central point of focus where one can reference past articles for topics. |

Well, it's why I'm open to suggestions.
More than likely I would host it on my blog, so articles can be indexed.
I would like to create a repository for all the very innovative ideas from users as well. The ultimate in quick reference for everything Caligari as well.
It would be as much as your magazine as it would be mine to develop it for you, give me some ideas please. :) |

The idea is good but we dont even have much discussion
on the forum so why should that change with the mag ?
I brought up the thread about Sketchup to Truespace and
only 3 people showed any interest !!!! You and JimB and Burnart !:(
Jim B had very good ideas and links but that was just about it !
I get the imput from other forums !
Theres much more ideas.......
When it comes to real news this forum is almost dead !
And it was pretty interesting some years ago !
Lots of plugins and shaders etc !

Well, lot of trueSpace users are not English speaking. That may be a problem there with forum participation.
I suppose there are quite a few that don't participate in the forum for a lot of reasons, but read them.
I have a genealogy Website I've had since the middle 1990s on a particular surname. I get maybe one email per year on the content, but I know it's viewed a lot from the statistics.
What I was thinking more than just news is a repository magazine. A place where one could go to find out how to do things. Or where old plug-ins are stored for vintage trueSpace versions.
I may just do it here on the Caligari Blogs if no one shows too much of an interest in it.
Just putting out feelers for now. |

Sounds like a cool idea james. I think it would be fun. I especially like the user profile idea.
I would suggest, for a repository type idea, folks could submit a link to something they find useful. That would help, because you would not be left alone trying to find all the goodies in the forums since day one. But, there may need to be a 'link-comparitor' of sorts, to avoid having massively duplicated entries to the same link. A near-worst case scenario would be, 100 users submit the same link, 100 times. That can get kinda messy.
Maybe some special reports on the SMC's, and MMC's; and the winners can be interviewed and talk about their approach to the theme. Or, heck, all participants can be interviewed as well. Why not?
Also, links to info for the current MMC and SMC competitions, scriptor meetings, animator club meetings, TNL!, etc.
Personally I think it's fine to quote folks here about tips and tricks, announcements, etc. The more the better.
Cool idea James!

sounds really cool
I would certainly like to help, I think a good idea would be to do it every month when the winners of the Image and Animation challenge come in, then maybe someone can grab a bit of an interview from the winner, questions such as what inspired them and about their career. I think its a good idea to make a central location for much of the content on these forums. So maybe a few people would be given accounts enabling them to be an Editor/Submitter who, whilst referencing the original post, re-presents the material in a more graphical and proper way (such as grammatical changes and longer explanations), hope this makes sense.
Although im not a regular poster on these forums I am constantly sifting through it and reading posts daily so I could help. Also i can be pretty good with graphics (web design, logos etc) so I could help with that, and maybe I can also provide webspace for it such as a ts7.mat-ski.com or something for now.
Adding further, maybe it could be something like a plan I had last year regarding a TS7 Wiki page (like wikipedia but just on truespace) of which the source code is freely available. |

What a great idea James, good thinking. I had thought about suggesting some kind of "Top tS Tips" repository, but I think your idea would be be a far better way of implementing that.
As for articles, in addition to those already suggested, I would like to see a really stunning scene broken down into all its component elements (models\textures\lighting SFX and post FX etc.) and a detailed explanation given on each one. Perhaps you could download these elements each month so you could eventually recreate the scene yourself and render it at home and thus gain a better understanding of how the original image was made. Each scene\article could be spread over several months thus encouraging people to re-revisit the site.
In addition, I know some people have already commented that quite often they find the lack of response to their thread(s) disheartening. From my personal viewpoint, whilst I like to think I read most of them, being an amateur hobbyist at best, I feel totally unable to contribute because I have absolutely no idea of what there talking about and can only understand about every other word; especially the more complicated threads about HDRI, V-Ray and some of the plug ins. Perhaps the magazine could have a Noobs Corner (although I'm not fond of that term) where such matters are explained in beginners terms.
Anyhow, great idea and if I can help in any way give us a shout. |

trueBlue, 1999 "trueSpace Magazine" $45 -$50 only one issue sent out....
Is that what you are referring to ? We all wanted to do a tar and feather back then. I won't mention names.
Sounds good JamesMc. As long as you can keep people interested it might work. |

Bill Fleming stuffed up quite badly with his "subscription model" business dealings, he should have stuck to writing books.
I think this is good idea, especially tips and tricks. |

Well, I won't be charging anything for access to the Website, heh.
It will be more Website than magazine, but articles will be encouraged, especially if they are tutorials. :)
Putzing around with the Website now, forgotten more than I ever knew about HTML it seems. :D
What do you think if the name? trueClue... |

Sounds like a pretty cool idea to me - I really like the idea of 'dismantling' scenes to get to grips with how people use different techniques, particularly on the texturing, lighting and post-process for example. As one possible case, someone like W!zard would be great for something like that - he's usually very open about his techniques and good at explaining how he uses a mixture of techniques, post-process with Z-render or multi-pass renders, etc and I'm sure he could be persuaded to give a good example.
It would be brilliant too if we could see more about the Gallery winners/honourable mentions etc as many of these aren't seen in the forums themselves - even just getting a chance to see a wireframe from the creator could be hugely useful to those of us trying to learn.
Tips and tricks can be a bit tricky to fully cater for the range of users - there's still a fair few of us using old versions of tS or without VRay for example that many of the newer tutorials etc don't apply to directly (that's not to say we can't learn something from them of course!).
Sounds like it could be a great enterprise, albeit quite a big one to pull together to the point where it is of any real value. Even though I've not been here as long as many, I've seen seen things like the truespace 'repository' and the tsx archive which haven't exactly taken off as well as peope might hope - so I hope this becomes a greater success. Good luck. |

This is the start of the actual magazine page. The previous image was of the blog, where questions, comments and ideas can be posted.
It's all pretty raw right now, but just trying to get it happening, so to speak. :) |

I've opened up the blog, so you can post messages there if you want. Also to see if there are any bugs.
Future submitters that wish to contribute content and etc. will be given Guest Author status.
Guest Author: Allowed to post drafts for review and posts that will be published to trueClue weblog without review. Guest authors can only edit their own posts.
I made a General Comments section, if anyone wants to utilize that space for their ideas and suggestions. That way, we don't clutter up Norm's forum. :D

This project is still rough and is a HTML WIP, but open to suggestions and comments. :o
Okay, getting some ground underneath my feet with the trueClue magazine and blog, slowly putting this thing together.
The concept is to make a monthly updated magazine which will have articles, tricks and tips along with full blown tutorials.
Tied along with the magazine is a blog that will have a link to each article, tutorial and of course a general category to discuss whatever you wish.
Suggestions are open to the design and content of both magazine and blog site.
Some of the links aren't implemented but will be if I get cooperating authors. :D
For instance, the Dribble section. Hopefully, I can get the Dribble programmer to make an entry, summarize the points of Dribble on the blog and in the magazine article and provide a central place for questions and answers about Dribble (a FAQ)
It has a lot of potential, just getting there will be half the fun.

An update to the page and displaying it here for those who haven't visited it yet. :D
Put in an advertisement for trueSource, the online shop sponsored by 3DFrog. I'll make a better banner for it later on, just wanted to get his advertising in there. :)
Prodigy has agreed to put his window tutorial on trueClue and he will be the first do so! |

Havent chimed in yet, but figured I would now while passing through, to say that this looks like a good idea! Good luck with it, I hope the project runs strong for many years (or more) to come!
On the gallery winners, if they allow their email to be posted, you could always email them direct and say "We have this online magazine, saw your winning image / animation, would like to do a little article about it" and see what they say.
Those that don't have their email shown have of course requested a degree of privacy, so I wouldn't go searching for ways to contact those - but if their email is up there, could be they are just itching for someone to email and ask them about their work.
Anyway, will be watching this with interest as it develops and grows :)
Thanks!
