OK, My first look at doing Terragen with Truespace has just been started, some of the effects look crap I know that, any other comments?

I'm trying to enter something like this to 3D World

interesting image, but I would say, dont use it! generally you can tell that you have super imposed your ship over a terragen image and use a shadow catcher, reflection on the water would be nice, you could just import your terrain into TS and texture it there, and then add a water plain with a good texture map or use a simbiont material. Also id look at a better way of adding the heat waves in the flames of your ship and such instead of just using the blur tool in photoshop (or whatever you used), perhaps the ship would also benefit some more texture work doing to it. I advise you work on your ship thing first and then worry about backdrop, your main focal point is the ship not the background, so maybe also adding some DOF in photoshop or whatever you use would give the image some more depth.

Good luck with the image and keep up the good work!

Sorry about not replying, its too much hassle to get on at the weekends and mondays.
Thanks for the crits, I have a feeling that the image would look a lot better if the ship wasn't there!

Dont say that lol, I like the ships design, i would just work on it a little more, get some better texturing done to it and then think about a terragen background

To my mind, it looks a little odd with the two side-pods (assume engine pods?) at different angles - if it's an attempt at thrust vectoring (as in Harriers etc) it could hard to control.. .kind of looks like the pilot can't quite decide what they're doing or that ship has taken some damage! Thrust vectoring usually (as far as I'm aware) uses parallel vectoring on both sides for stability (usually for up/down/forward movement), with the possibility of additional nozzles/outlets for yaw or sideways movement, depending on the vehicle...

Am I making sense?!

Looks like it has potential - with the dark textures I'm finding it a little hard to make out the geometry of the ship, so maybe you could show us something with a lighter or plainer texture?

Keep at it... :D

I too have tried to comp using TS and TG.

I find that TG images seem very washed out and it can be a pain in the bum to match the saturation and contast of the various comp objects.

The other pain is getting shadows to fall correctly and make reflections look right. You might want to think about placing you ship over dry land to remove the necessity of having to produce realistic (yet fake) reflections. Also you need to consider reflections of the landscape on the ship which I suppose could be achieved by either an environ map or IBL but you would need to render a full 360 of the landscape to get good maps.

So many things you need to consider :)

Keep going though.

importing terragen into truespace is not that hard, there was even a tutorial floating around the forums a few months back on how to do it.

the following are Terragen imported landscapes.. (Note I am by no means an expert in terragen or truespace)

Unfortunately, texturing Terragen objects isn't that easy, it doesn't seem to like it, I'm hoping to make a realistic VTOL and change the camera angle instead

I'll see if I can find a link to the tutorial on texturing terragen landscapes in TS.

found it
