cool tamtam. And that is a very important question, as well.
W!zard: Regarding long posts, No prob man. I was just giving Tom a hard time there. Hehe. Gotta rouse 'im a little.
Ok so, let's see... I've got a big jug of pennies I need to cash in. Maybe I can mail that to Caligari headquarters to pay for 7.6. Hm... maybe not; may cost more in postage eh?
Oh well. I'm sure we'll know soon enough. I guess the longer it takes, the more pennies we can save in the meantime. |

Mmm beer!
Cool hamster cage too (just summarising in one thread, passing through in a rush just now). Space hamsters from the future!
Thanks!

um... that would be a DESIRE, not a talent. A TALENT for burning buildings would involve a person being able to cause it to combust without any tools.
Some people have a "talent" for art. Talents are abstract things. SKILLS are an ability to use a tool. Anyone can have a talent, but to get anything done, you need a skill. To learn a skill, you need all those other things (patience, interest, time, and the tools).
A "Talent" for art would allow a person to arrange objects in the correct places, put the lights just right, and get the angle correct.
But these things can be learned as a skill as well. The person with talent my be able to do it quicker, easier and with less stress, but the end result would be the same.
Well said Kena. If I were physically capable of making my point in a few words it would go something like - How can you tell the difference between someone with enough 'talent' to get good at something and someone with enough desire to get good at it?
I think that what is often called a 'talent' is nothing more than a desire - toi excell at some thing.
Desire has a fairly easily seen survival value and therefore can be seen as a result of evolution.
The case for Talent is not as clear given that 'Talent' is indistinguishable from desire.
@Tamtam - sorry for hijacking your thread - you;ll find it happens a lot less in the other forums but the roundtable forum is a little more unstructured. Please feel free to hijack one of my threads in return!!;):D I owe yu one! |

I've had a huge desire to be good at drawing and singing, but I am good at neither despite that, and despite much work :) I know of many with a desire to be great writers, great musicians, and despite the desire and hard work, they are still neither.
More on this when I have time, but probably somewhere else ;)
Thanks!

It is easier to see where you have been than it is to know exactly where you are going.
Teach a man how to bait his own hook and you can scratch your nose at your leisure.
Having teleporter underwear function would solve a lot of problems.
Sucking frozen treats through a straw causing brain freeze should replace water boarding as an interrogation method.
Floating an air biscuit in a darkened, crowded theater should be a felony.
Mustache goblins in the winter time appear to turn off the kissable option.
Wouldn't Global Warming make the exploration of the Antarctic more pleasurable?
"Can you hear me now" is not a polite thing to say at a deaf man's funeral.
Switching men's and women's restroom signs at a wedding is always a pleasurable activity.
....
thank you thank you,
I'll be here all week.

OK a little reverse psychology. I'm starting a new thread titled "What is Talent" and all we are going to talk about is the Price of 7.6...

If a person doesn't reach their goal - whatever it may be - then they probably just stopped too soon - perhaps because they felt they lacked talent when what they needed was perseverance and innovation.
Hard work? This is another term I take exception too - work is onbly hard when you don't know how to do it easily. effectiveness beats hard work everytime. If a person desires to be a great artist, musician, writer etc then they need a great teacher, they need to learn to do easily what others find hard.
Re "More on this when I have time, but probably somewhere else" If you wait till after tS 7.6 is released I'll be too busy!!;) Until such time as we can resume this discussion, thanks for indulging me. |

Bummer! I can see how that would be disappointing but I don't think that the ability to see in colour is really a talent. |

For movie and tv show, you could look at Luis Saavedra's work. He won a contest that got him funding to turn his pilot episode into a TV show, and has been touring animation conferences around the world with his work.
So it can indeed make such work, just people choose not to :)
There are also many reasons why tools are "industry standards" but usually those are more complex than just being the best tool for the job. There was a real good blog about that I posted a link to some time back, about why people think they should get the "industry standard" and why the reasoning is usually flawed :)
You can consider that tS7.5 has come along only in the last year or two, so its not going to make a dint in established workflows in large organisations that are slow to adapt to change. Which is fine with us, but at the same time, means you shouldn't rule it out for making games or movies or more.
Unfortunately I can't give you the pricing just yet, as we wait until release is absolutely imminent before discussing those details.
HTH!
Tom
Too true, Tom...and yet tS still is doable...I am actually hoping to bring tS with M.E. when I go into the Game Industry...although I'll have 3Ds Max at my side as well ["industry standard" or none, its a requirement for work...], I don't think anyone can object to me making art in a faster program then porting it to 3Ds Max for finalization and finishing touches [such as bounding spheres, target markers, camera nodes, etc.]...
Still, once I aquire it, tS will certainly remain my main tool for a good amount of time...even if I was fluent with Max, tS would still save M.E. the more valuable resource of time...^>"<^
I mentioned tS on Polycount...appears a few people still remember it...ye may be seeing one of 'em on here...if I manage to send a PM his way...

Why would it be shutting down? Just because it has become free doesnt mean its the end of the product! My everyone is such a worrier ;)
Check this blog:
http://blogs.msdn.com/virtualearth/archive/2008/07/23/announcing-truespace-for-virtual-earth-3d-development.aspx
There is going to be a lot of promotion for tS7.6, this is nothing to do with shutting down! Emails are going out to all our customers, and a copy of one will be on the Captain's Blog soon too I believe (so you won't have to wait to have a read).
Don't forget that Caligari is not what it was - making something free while we were independent would be The End Of All Things as there would be nothing left to run the company on. Now thought things are different, and there are many more options as to how we can run things.
We want to get creative power in the hands of everyone who wants it, and we're in a position to do that now, like never before! The future is not dark, it is very bright indeed!
Thanks!
