I know this has been brought up before but still I have found no really good 3rd party terrain generators that will export to Truespace 7.5 (either collada import on workspace side or cob, 3ds, or obj import on the model side). Iam practicing with terragen and a few others but still no great success. Since I do only real time renders the terrains must be optimized for real time display. Iam hoping maybe this thread will peak interest again ...

Bryce 5.5 is free (http://www.download.com/Bryce/3000-6677_4-10696716.html?hhTest=1). You can export terrains as obj files for import to ts. You can configure the resolution (number of polys) of the terrains during export.

You could use the deform paint, soft select, and soft paint tools to sculpt your own terrain using a plane.

Another method is to start with a plane. Use the poly draw tool to cut the height curves into the plane, then pull them up in Z to create the highs and lows.

What Iam hoping to find is a terrain generator that we could import in to Truespace with all the textures imported properly. I REALLY LIKE the many outstanding landscapes and the landscape generator in Carrara. See image below. I have been working on exporting from Carrara in to Truespace .... all boils down to getting the textures properly in and optimizing for real time display.

I have gotten the terrain from carrara to ts with texture maps using 3ds format, not sure if it generates bump maps too, i'll look into it, but i have 23 hours left on my render :o

Hi 3dfrog, Wow, you got the Carrara landscape textures in to Truespace? Please let us know how you did that. I export landscapes from Carrara via 3ds format in to model side of Truespace. But textures do not come in.

in carrara 3ds export dialogue you must do an additional checkbox to generate the texture maps. Do you have carrara 6? maybe its only in there. I have 6. Anyway, when I load my carrara terrain into model side it comes in mapped properly, but if it is not just use materail editor to find and apply the texture map. I looked at some of the maps generated from carrara, and seems there is no bump maps, it generated the texture map as expected then it generated some black and gray texture maps for some reason, dont know what those are for, but they do not have the bump information for the roughness of the surface as I expected. But you can make some roughness with a normal map for ts pretty easy I guess.

Funny you show that rock landscape, I am rendering that same texture out, with the same landscapes pretty much except I added more hills and have it submerged in water.

Earthsculptor (http://www.earthsculptor.com/), blender (http://www.blender.org/), T-ed, bryce, terragen...there are a few more, but I like most of these. Oh yeah, milkshape has a terrain generator as well. Probably the best there is thoug, Grome (http://www.quadsoftware.com/index.php?m=section&sec=product&subsec=editor).

Hi nowherebrain, Iam checking these out. I notice I purchased Vue couple years ago and it has cob export so I will check that out. I guess what I really am looking for is a terrain program that will export all textures and uv's and look great in the workspace view without alot of work. Will update.

I've used Terragen, MojoWorld and Vue to produce terrain height fields and textures. None of them are particularly difficult but Vue easily has the greatest degree of control over your mesh and texture resolutions - it also exports directly to .COB which you can load in tS modeler.

I can only say the same thing Wiz says and on top of that

look at the free world mashine 2 node system !

It can be used to make very realistic greyscales for Vue !;)

You can use Carrara terrain maps and I have had some success with them.

Words of caution though:

(1) need to flip normals on imported plane
(2) The geometry is all goofy and won't take subdivision, quad divide after normalizing at your own risk.

Here's my work flow:

(1) Export via 3DS
(2) Use Inagoni Baker Plug-in in Carrara to make 4096X4096 Diffuse and Normal Maps
(3) Import via 3DS
(4) Normalize plane in workspace
(5) blank the texture imported on terrain by resetting the texture and refilling it.
(6) Apply the diffuse and normal maps from the Inagoni Baker.
(7) I used lightworks, shows up ok in real time though

Here's an old imported landscape using the above method and procedure.

Here's a quickie real time terrain in Workspace. I used 4 photoshop layers and painted areas with a pattern on each layer. Exported as tga.

Once in tS, I just applied the maps, used the tga as bump as well. Then I copied the same plane and imported the same terrain map as a transparent map to give it that shadowy look.

Needs refinement, but terrain can be done in tS with the soft paint brush and layers using photoshop or gimp, etc.

Thanks so much jamesmc for the Carrara info. I love the terrains and the terrain creator in Carrara. It is incredible. However, was still having issues with the 3ds import in to Truespace. Now, I have the solution that you have mentioned. Must of taken you a bit to figure that out. This thread is becoming very informative for anybody interested in terrains for Truespace.

update on this terrain thread. I have been trying different terrain generators. Lots of options and lots of fun. Nowherebrain had mentioned http://www.earthsculptor.com and Iam very impressed with that program. Especially for the price or the lack of price. Carrara export is working good with the new workflow. I will keep investigating different softwares and update.
