I've been working on this for a little while. It was inspired by concept art from Tim Warnock. You can see the origional on his website at www.thenextside.com/conceptArt.html
If you click on the second thumb on the bottom row of his pencil sketches you'll see the image I based this model on. (There are five ships in the sketch, the bottom right is the look I'm after.)
It was his concept so I thought it only right to ask his permission to post these WIP's here and he kindly agreed. Thanks Tim!
That said, I deviated from his concept a bit. Mainly because my modeling skills for anything other than architecture aren't much beyond novice level. I've found a few mistakes in my approach and will start over this weekend. This version will get used in the background of scene in the somewhat near future.
I'd really welcome any comments and crits you might have.
Thanks,
John
PS, If you're interested, my materials and textures are pretty much all from Simbiont /Shader Lab. Used version 6.6 for modeling/rendering. |

I'm trying to work out how the operator is going to get in and out of this thing and based on the origional sketch the only way I can think of is by having the canopy move forward and then roll under the fuselage part way... anyway, more to follow but this is what the second attempt looks like so far.
The figure is just a basic poser5 character in a driving postion from the default pose library. Its just for scale here and to help with that layout of the controls when I get to the interior. |

Well, depending a bit how it lands (assuming it does at some point?), there could be several options, but you need to decide if this thing only operates in atmosphere, or at least only opens in atmosphere, or if not whether the pilot is in a suit with air supply.
As is, you couldn't get in/out as shown without a space suit if you were in space, for example. If it's landed on a planet with atmosphere, how does it 'stand up' - no 'legs' or similar shown. If it docks with a space ship (in space?), is that the kind of access you want? Or will it land in a pressurised landing bay?
Not trying to be difficult, but just thinking aloud. If you decide how the shuttle is intended to operate, it may restrict certain types of access or make others available. Looking at your renders, I'd sugest a side panel access, back behind the cockpit at the narrowest part of the vessel - could easily imagine a hatch there - where you could then move forward to the cockpit. This could conceivably be in the ofrm of a docking ring/hatch for non-atmospheric entry, for example...
I like the look of the shuttle - interested to see how it pans out. |

Nez,
Thanks for your comments. I didn't find you were "being difficult" at all. Those are all good questions.
From the concept sketch and some of the origional artwork I had imagined this shuttle as being something used only within a planet's atmoshphere. As far as landing goes I kind of pictured this thing as hovering there when not moving - however I have considered retractable skid-type tricycle landing gear.
I like the idea of entering from the side behind the cockpit, but if you look at the sketch on Tim Warnock's website it appears to be mostly engine behind the pilot's seat. I know I could change this as I'm not building this for any reason other than fun/practice but I kind of wanted to keep as close to the sketch as possible.
Thanks again. Hope to post another image in a day or two. |

Actually, now that you have me thinking, I may rework my first attempt into a two person vehicle in which you would enter through the side of the center section. Thanks for the idea... |
