I just recently tried particle illusion 3. After installing it and NOT reading manual or reading anything I did this quick test in about 10 minutes. I previously tried fire and smoke and many other effects in "adobe after effects" and "sony vegas". Much more time consuming (and difficult) to me and I did not like the quality as much as I like particle illusion 3. And with particle illusion you can do it all and very quickly. Fire, smoke, moving water and moving trees and moving grass, fireworks, lighting effects, text effects, plus much more. All keyframes on to your objects or scene background so easily. Very impressed!

how did you get this into workspace? is it some kind of sprites or something? how does it work?

Hi 3dfrog. It is just too easy and the quality is so high! Just realtime render your frames in workspace (or render out frames on model side) and import those rendered jpg, bmp or tga, frames in to particle illusion. Then easily do all kinds of keyframing effects. Then export finished product as a video or jpeg sequence etc. Possiblities are endless and as I mentioned quality is so high. Best fire and smoke I have seen in awhile. Many variations of fire and smoke and the many other high quality effects too. Keyframing is a breeze. Even does wind blowing grass and trees.

I sometimes use particle illusion, it has some good effects, and a lot of free plugins from the website, However! a lot of people are pretty away of this software and its effects, such as the fire and smoke which although look pretty, are still not particularly realistic. Dont get sucked into this program and start randomly dropping particle effects on everything you do because its standard presets are amateurish and CHEESY! (just like using star wipes and such in premier).

These effects can be appropriately used if you are an experienced compositor otherwise it just looks slapped on

Thanks for your great info. I have seen some stunning effects done with particle illusion. Even the presets. I have been looking all over the web at particle work done in AFTER EFFECTS and other programs. AFTER EFFECTS does not even come with a fire preset. You have to create it with fractals. Sony vegas does not have fire. You have to use Boris or another plugin. I guess if you know what you are doing (Iam not there yet of course) you can create just as good of effects in particle illusion as other programs. And so VERY much easier. I just keyframed "500 frames" in particle illusion of the smoke ball test object below in just a couple minutes (thats 500 frames). There are some really cool features in particle illusion when it comes to speeding up keyframing. Here is another couple tests I just did. I know their silly but when you got dozens of different fires, smokes, waters, etc its fun to practice.

Since I use my academic discount sometimes on software it is easier to buy different software packages. I have been finding a bunch of films that have used particle illusion. See list below. Anyway, its neat bringing up different cool things out there that are available to us. If I ever master this like the images below I would be excited. Sure is so much easier than other similar partical software packages I have used:banana:

Thanks DavidJohnson for the tip. I use only the workspace side with real time renders unfortunately particle2Truespace particles works only for model side renders. When eventually Truespace 8.0 comes out then we wont have any model side at all. And I do love realtime display rendering. I successfully did a 100,000 frame real time display render and it did not take long at all. I broke it up in to 10 10,000 frames renders so It would not overtax my system... sure went fast.

I first got particle Illusion when it was a version 1 pre-release special! - back when it was under the Impulse banner. Its very cool alright - I often see effects and things in ads and on tv and say to myself "Illusion!". It (version 2) was incorporated in one of the major compositing packages at one stage - can't remember which one off the top.

I used Illusion in my volcano anim

There is a huge library of particle effects freely available as well as some professional ones to buy if you want. It's also a great little compositor in its own right and allows you to composit images with embedded alpha channel information so you can assemble layers and have different effects going on in between the layers.

A great adjunct to any 3d program

Glad you liked it jhowell. Apart from the obvious particle stuff there is also another use of illusion on the volcano. I created an oozing dribble of orange liquid in illusion and used the resulting anim to wrap around the volcano. Its the lava flow beneath the metaball lava that flows out during the eruption.

(I'll check out your anims when I'm not at work.)
