Free as in free to everyone? ie. free, so any new users don't have to pay for it?
If that's the case I'm a little bit annoyed since I spent much money on upgrades and buying Truespace 7 but at the same time I am happy becuase it'll mean more tutorials, more plugins and more of everything.
Please, can someone confirm this as the website here in the UK still shows 7.5 as chargeable, no mention of 7.6. I have downloaded 7.6 though and VRay and noticed that 7.6 no longer asks for a serial.
Free? To everyone? No money is needed to buy it? :)
Hi, new truespace user here. I've tried to learn with other free resources; blender, wings3d, free bryce5, but nothing really clicked for me. With TS it is clicking. I just wanted to say that if it weren't free, I wouldn't have bought it because I am so inexperienced with this creative medium of 3D I could not possibly justify the amount it cost.
Now that it is free, I am very anxious to learn it. I've been doing a lot of reading and organizing of the content for training and I am very grateful. This may annoy some existing paying customers, which I can empathize with, but it also is giving lots of new users a chance to learn and grow. In the end, what matters most I don't know, but I do know that this is a true gift.
I make graphics for GUIs and stuff as a hobby, am a web geek/designer/coder by trade, and so I really can use this in my work. I have tried as I said the other free programs and though they are also very good the level of complexity and stuff really made it difficult to learn. Blender is so esoteric and unique with it's own UI tackling a complex subject like 3D for a total beginner using it is really harder than it sounds. Even with the excellent resources available to the blender community it's still very difficult to learn.
Anyway, just saying thanks very much and I hope to make some friends and learn more about 3D and truspace using this forum.
My web site is http://designermonkey.rekkerd.org if you care to look at some of my graphics, and http://grymmjack.deviantart.com if you care to see hobby stuff.
Thanks!

well hey grymmjack Welcome to truespace! I have used blender on occasion myself. Funny thing; on some of the blender forums the folks there indicate they find the Truespace interface baffling. hehe ... guess it really depends on what you are used to working with.
So web development eh? Cool! Well stick around because I have a feeling that you'll fit right in! :jumpy::banana::)
The forum folks here are very friendly and, it's really a good thing you're checking out the documentation. Very important because the experts wrote that stuff.
Have you watched all the *Now Free* videos? Man... I got all mine by paying $20 each when they were on sale; $79 was a bit too high.
Anyway, welcome and looking forward to seeing some of your work posted here!

hi froo :) thanks for the warm welcome. i've been reading the manual and going through the videos organizing them. it's a tremendous amount of info :)
which *now free* videos are you refering to? do you have a link? i grabbed all of the tutorials that were in the learning section, fundamental, advanced, and some old ones from ts5 i think.
glad to be among fellow pixel pushers :) my first 3D project is still a ways off - i'm one of those types of people that has to learn what/how/where/why before i do anything besides play and experiment with the UI.
one question; i found the toolbars in truspace6 tab able to expand all of their docked icons by clicking the handle, and then clicking it again but i cant figure out for my life how to do this with the truespace7 (is this what it is called for the 'default/model' tabs?) toolbars - the darker colored ones sitting below the workarea. do they do the same thing in a new way or is it not possible to expose them all at once? i found the ability to expose all of the buttons very welcoming and made it easier for me to get my bearings. of course this is from a completely neophyte perspective it's one of the attentions to detail that i like about truespace. it's friendly it seems. |

Actually I've picked up remarkably little of this kind of aggravation. Mostly those who paid for it even relatively recently are balancing their frustration with the knowledge that all the courses are now free as well.
Me myself, because I won the anim competition in Nov last year , I have $100 supposedly available to me to spend in the Caligari shop! I had been holding onto it waiting for the next paid for update - I know VRay is still available but that is not a wholely owned Caligari product and I can't use my $100 on it. (If I'm wrong - perhaps someone at Caliagari can tell me so :p ) |

hey grymmjack. You probably got them all then.
On the Caligari.com page, there is a link with the text: All Video Courses FREE.
Click that, and that is where they all are.
The truespace 7 side is called the Workspace. In version 7 it was called Player (just a little trivia for ya there. :p )
On the Workspace side, to view the icons, AFAIK you have to click and drag on the icon, and the flyout window for that icon set opens. If you move your mouse over these icons in the flyout window, additional flyout windows appear.
I think, in Chapter 2 of the manual, are pictures of all the icons.
Another great way to learn is at the online meetings. Tuesday night scriptors, Saturday Afternoon animators club, Thursday Night Live (twice a month).
talk to you soon!

"That's cool. I'm sure a corporate big-shot like yourself has better things to do with their time than talk to passive-aggressive nobodies like me. I will point out, though, that at least I took the time to consider your opinions and respond to your post, unlike everyone else who seems to have ignored it."
I never called you, nor meant to imply, that you are a "nobody". Time sent
with you is not wasted. I hope that I can make the distinction to you
between commenting on my opinions and attacking my integrity and
intelligence.
When you say "I find many other aspects of your analysis equally suspect,
but this the time for happiness", I feel you are implying that either I am an
idiot or I am disingenuous but I should not seek to to redress questioning
of my intelligence or integrity. If you had asked me to explain my reasoning
or justify my rationalizations then I would have been more receptive to your
comments.
Seeking validation from others of my opinion is not why I took the time to
write them. So someone's lack of desire to comment does not detract from
my desire to share my views. As I said, I have dealt with acquisitions for
many years. I have read many of the posts by others wondering about the
future of various features and add-ons like V-Ray. My opinion is not some
off-handed remark. I have been down a similar road with Microsoft to the
one Caligari now travels.
As for being a "big-shot", I have no idea how you measure success. I have
however dealt with Microsoft as a supplier and a client for more than
22 years. The first computer company I worked for was one of only three
companies in Canada authorized to sell IBM and Microsoft O/S with systems
and without. I have worked with many companies that came and went
through IBM's and Microsoft's doors.
At the time of Softimage sale I was working with one of the their more
noted clients (and a key product tester/developer for them). This company
did the computer animated MTV promo interludes you saw on the channel.
The sale was a huge blow to our client because Softimage had to change
its relationship to my company's client and in the end they had to look
at alternatives. In those days that was a major financial undertaking.
I do appreciate comments concerning my opinions. Questioning my
intelligence or my veracity is not appreciated, and I feel, it would be foolish
for me to let those remarks go without response. |

OK folks. All points well taken and duly noted. :)
From a 'beta tester' point of view I do not see reason for concern regarding the path truespace will take in the future. Of course time will tell but I sincerely do not see truespace changing in a negative way. In other words, what we have will be improved upon, and we will get new features. That's about all I can add to this.
Ok... back to testing. :D

There have been many fights on these forums about the acquisition of Caligari by Microsoft in the past. I'll concede you probably weren't here for them, and so probably didn't grasp why I mentioned this wasn't the time for more fighting about the implications on the future of ts. I'm sure others here remember it well, which is proabably why they wisely dodged the topic, as I should have - my bad.
FYI - I was very annoyed when the acquisition happened, although I can only judge by what's happened since, and the 7.6 release is great.
FYI pt2 - indicating someone is passive-aggressive = instant enemy. At least with anyone who knows what this implies. It's a cheap shot that's guaranteed to cause trouble.
You didn't like what I said, that's fine [edit: Sorry, I should add that by fine, I should explain that I can understand how you could have read my post to be attacking your integrity, not fine, I can't be bothered with you anymore. After reading this again, I realise it could be seen as hostile......]. Nothing personal was intended, I think it's better left at that.
BTW I'm having a great time with 7.6. Well done again, Caligari.:D |

*********************
My apologises, in retrospect I should not have written passive-aggressive,
and yes I know exactly what it means. It was lack of reflection on my part
before I responded to the offense I perceived from your response. Again, my
sincere apology for that "cheap shot".
I did respond to your other comments. I thought it was in a positive manner.
I felt that you assumed I had no experience or knowledge of what I am
talking about.
For me it is not a matter of different opinions, I respect and enjoy the reparte
of discussing a contra view. I did agree with your point about 3rd party apps
as a future for trueSpace.
Just to reiterate my point, I do not believe trueSpace is at an end. I do
believe within 9 to 12 months it will go through a transformation into a
different product than you have known previously. This is not a bad thing, it
is not a good thing it is just a change. How one reacts to determines the
good or bad. For some the new direction will draw them to trueSpace, for
others they may have to take the content they created and move it into
a new application. In reality they lose nothing. I remember André LaMothe
mentioning a few year back how everything you learn in trueSpace will aid
in all your future 3D projects. The only change is learning a new interface
and that just takes a little time.
I am sorry that you were upset by the acquisition, I suspected something
like that was going to happen last August after a few things I heard and
read from Caligari. Reading between the lines is a big part of my job,
because rarely do people in business expose their true intentions and there
can be a lot of money left on the table for those who guess wrong.
The only thing that upset me about the situation is that I had just
renewed my proteam membership in December and I felt that was not
going to pay off.
I did see all those arguments concerning the future of Caligari and many
seemed based on "gut-feelings" and "hopeful desires".
To anyone who take the time to read this far, I can most definitely assure
you that for "trueSpace", or whatever it may be called, the future is bright.
So far, 7.6 is indeed a fine iteration of the program. You have nothing to lose
or risk by using it and a great deal to gain. As I have said previously, I have
a lot of experience dealing with Microsoft Corporation and relations. Your
investment of time in trueSpace will only pay dividends.
Transient, my sincere best wishes. I hope all sharp implements are now
interred. :) |

For the flyouts of all icons, this was removed as an option.

I'm very grateful for the forum denizens not tearing into the new guy then :) I know how I would feel if the tables were turned, I would be happy that the program was gaining momentum but also frustrated. I will say though that so far so good, I'm stunned and surprised by trueSpace's quality and old price - for the money it's truly a good value for money. At the very least those of you that have paid have definitely gotten their moneys worth.
Maybe you could get them to put the $100 into a paypal account or something? |

Ahh thanks. Do you meet in the truPlace? That is cool but very unique and I'm not quite sure how that works yet. I did manage to figure out how to interact with the environment somewhat but got lost in negative space (or in the bottom of the model somehow). Still learning the key "help me go back to where I was" commands, but from what I've seen it's completely awesome to model interactively and collab in realtime!
If you guys meet in truPlace, I'd love to attend. I'm curious to see how it works in use besides just playing around in FPS walk mode and such. What time and what time zone do the meetings start? And is it the twice a month the 2nd and 4th week or the 1st and 3rd week? |

Hi grymmjack.
Yes, we do meet in the shared spaces.
As Dele pointed out in the thread link, we have the Scriptor meeting in the Scriptorium every Tuesday night, 9 PM Eastern / 6 PM Pacific (Caligari Clock time). I am not sure if the Caligari clock is still setup; I think it needs to be fixed along with other website configurations.
Tomorrow night (Thursday) there is the TNL! (Thursday Night Live!) event, where everyone just comes to the Meeting Room to chill and have fun. Here's the link. Instructions for connecting are also at this link.
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=5988
Another way to connect is to click the icon that looks like two eyeballs looking at each other; located in the lower right hand corner of the interface.
When it opens:
1. Enter your login information. This is usually your forum login info (username and password)
2. Then in the textbox at the top of the dialog, you type in the portal you want to connect to, for example (the Meeting Room, on the TrueSpace server),
//tsportal.caligari.com/1111
3. Then Press the GO button to the right of this textbox.
Hope to see you there!
The spaces are open 24/7/365, so you can test the connection anytime.

No, it got you on the list of people interested in when the SDK is released. It's not out yet, so mailing me doesnt get you the SDK right now as its not ready, but it gets you on the list of people who will be notified directly by email as soon as its out (and perhaps other news items too).
Thanks!

The two main spaces are the forum, which is like a grassy amphitheater and is set up mostly for giving presentations (presenter in middle of amphiteater, others stand around the outside), though it has some cool jumps in there (try the ramp at the back, and try landing on those floating boxes in the air).
The other is our meeting room for TNL! This one is mostly static (well, actually that may vary depending on what kind of objects people leave in there! It's had a shark, a UFO, and several other unusual objects in there in its time).
That room is there for people to meet and model together so we've kept it fairly empty, to make it easier to model. Come along to the TNL! (Thursday Night Live!) tomorrow, the 31st, at 5pm PST to meet up with others, where you can chat, ask questions, model etc.
The other spaces on there tend to show either how good the spaces can look, or some specific functionality (the labs have operating doors, the living room has a slideshow TV set and a CD player that will play some music, etc).
Mostly these are social spaces, so the spaces themselves are not what it's about, but rather the people in them. Visiting them on your own won't provide a ton of entertainment, but visiting them with others is a real treat!
HTH!
