Jack if this is a great tactic, then why other software companies don't do the same and provide their software for free, Maya, Max, you name it, Freeeee

Its because they do make the money they need from selling their software at full price and they build their strength on the quality of the software and what it can do.

Please you all know the reason Caligari user base has been so small is because of the price being too high.

Money spend in buying past versions of TS isn't a "wasted" investment if you can leverage the advantage of your current knowledge and skill level into making tutorials, plugins, models, materials, etc., for new users to buy.

Also there should be increased demand for users already familiar with TrueSpace. So this should mean an increase in both profitability and marketability of TrueSpace users.

well.. theres that, ..

I know I should be happy... but dang man... I spent alot of money to get this now 'free' software...

We spent money (not that much for 3D tools) no matter what was to happen with TrueSpace. If 7.6 was a paid upgrade, you would have your previous cost PLUS the upgrade cost, plus any future paid upgrade costs.

If you had put TS 7.0 on the shelf and never used it again, you still paid for it. No matter what happens with TS, you still paid for it, like it or not. Look to the future, the past costs are now irrelevant.

Oh-and did I mention that ALL of the training videos ($70 per) are now free? :)

Plus what Jack said about leveraging your already learned TS knowledge. That's what I call Use Value. If you have X number of years using TS and gaining knowledge, what $$$ value can you put on that? Quite a high value for the future, I would think! :-)

The very big difference to Blender is that you DONT need a doctors

degree for th UI !;)

I hope that with the new Sdk all the goodies like fluid simulations etc.

that were made for Blender are now a target for the "free" users

groups.:D

gee... now I'm not sure if I should mention that I posted in 4 other forums to come over here and get the free TS.

No, I'm sure. I WANT there to be more users of the program. If this does it, then I'm all for it. I just downloaded and installed everything but V-ray... Gotta find where that is.

Max and Maya use a lot of licensed technology. That prevents them from releasing their full software as freeware. I'm not really seeing that they have a problem with selling their software at their asking price though. For a company, paying $3500 a seat is not very much when compared to the salary of the employee that uses it. Yet even so, Max and Maya have made forays into the free market with GMax and Maya PLE. So even the "big boys" have used this strategy to build userbase.

But I agree, the question for Caligari would be what model they choose to use to leverage the increased userbase into cashflow. Right now they have Microsoft's desire to settle a score with Google and the deep pockets that follow. But it would be even better in my mind if the Caligari division is profitable on it's own.

Of course paying 300 bucks (in a special, never to be repeated, introductory deal no less) for something that is free twelve months later sucks. There's no getting around that.

However, I'm too happy at the moment to have access to all of the previously expensive training videos to care. Vray has been given some love too. And we all got a free upgrade, which is what we wanted.

Roman did acknowledge that he was grateful for the contribution past users made getting Caligari to this point in the e-mail, which is more than some comapanies would have done.

Personally, I don't think this the time to be cynical as, on balance, I think everyone has won here.

After visiting the site today, I was very surprised to hear that TS is now free! I had no money to do an upgrade to version 7.6 (currently use the 6.6) and I am happy to be able to have the new Truespace. The world of many laps. Now many will have access to a quality program, which brings the users of that forum, which is more than one family. I wish you all they want to join our family much success and they are welcome!

Roman, Bibiana and the entire Caligari crew: CONGRATULATIONS from a customer and friend who goes all the way back to 1995 and tS2. I'm so wrapped up in my own business these days that I had no idea you were purchased by MS, and the whole Virtual Earth thing until tonight.

Remember Pioneer and VRML? Remember Yahoo!3D? *sigh* That's what we were all working on together exactly TWELVE years ago! The original virtual earth, haha! Wow -- time flies.

Again, congratulations. Your dedication shows, paid off, and now you can spread the joy to a bigger audience!

Well, guess I better upgrade from 7.51 now!

p.s. - I'm not the least bit jaded about years and hundred$ of upgrade$, btw. I always felt I was getting my money's worth between versions, and I always felt the patronage was repaid twice over with every major version. I have other pasttimes which have cost me far more, and paid me back with far less!

p.p.s. - did I convey how happy I am for you guys??! :D

With the influx of new users, it's going to be really important for the existing users to help the new users out. Many may well be completely new to 3D and others will be coming from other apps. To help ensure that 7.6 is a success we all need to help the new forum members get up to speed with TrueSpace as best we can. One of the things that really sets TrueSpace apart from the other 3D applications is the great sense of community and helping each other out that we have here.

I think we don't have to worry about not enough entries in the modeling challenges anymore though... heh, gonna be a lot harder to get wins too...

Since I use TS to make my VisualPinball tables, I have announced on the VPForums site about TS being free now. So I expect we will see some of those folks over here now.

I must say I am glad to see booleans on the Workspace side now!

Forums will be open to those who are registered for tS, since its free to download, in effect that means open to everyone. There is still an approval process based on being registered, to avoid bots and similar spoiling our forums.

So the moral of the story is register tS7.6 first, then sign up for the forums :)

HTH!

I'm floored that Caligari would make trueSpace free after all these years. I don't regret the money I've spent since tS 5, but I do have to wonder what the business case is for releasing the product for free. My first reaction was it's the last hurrah for tS now that Microsoft bought the company, but that's more a knee-jerk reaction than anything. I certainly hope Caligari continues to develop trueSpace! I just don't like the other 3D apps that I've seen out there.

I see the people saying 'not fair I paid'...you know, I paid and I don't care. I got over 2 years of fun from TS 6.6 and 7.5 and if I didn't buy this, I'd have spent the money on games which would be gathering dust by now....

TS8 might not be free...

I think it's cool and I never would have expected courses.

Thanks Caligari...This is brilliant!!

As for VRay - if people get the software for free then perhaps they will buy VRay which may encourage development - it is the cheapest way to own it.

I tried a bunch of the video course links and they seem to be working fine for me. The main page has been updated ever since release for me also.

Tom did say that it might take a bit for the pages to update for the folks on the other side of the pond. I think it's a DNS thing. If that's the case, it could be on and off for up to 72 hours. It's usually good within 24 hours from my experience.

I would think things would be working for most people by now though. I guess if it's not working by around 10am PST, you might want to contact Caligari to see if there is anything they can do.

I have a question regarding the license. The license stipulates that the license is granted for use on one computer. What is the option for acquiring additional licenses if you want one copy on a PC and another on your laptop???
