I want to thank you all for supporting dribble these past few days, either by becoming a new customer or by making its existence known.
I just wanted to let the newcomers know that I am aware of some issues with what is currently released, most notably the "exploding scene" effect. This has been fixed, I just haven't had time to make a new release as I'm in the middle of moving.
By the end of next week we should be settled with our internet connection sorted out, so I'll be able to release the update then.
Again, thanks for all your support. |

I'm moved, internet back, but after dragging furniture in and out as fast as possible in 90F+ weather, I feel like I've been beaten up. So definitely towards the end of the week ;) |

I've never checked out Dribble (though I've heard of it). I've thought of getting Vray, since I don't have to shell out money for TS anymore; but I'd like to see what Dribble can do. :)
I have heard people having issues with the 3Delight license however; is it prohibitive?

Problems with the license seem to be very isolated, although the free license does run out every 6 months or so without warning, it is easy to reapply.
Dribble is excellent and worth purchasing for the fur and true displacement maping alone!
Look in the dribble test renders thread for some excellent examples, particularly transients plate of chocolates...if that does not get your wallet out, nothing will! |

Look at Prodigy's work for examples of VRay. Your a regular so I'm sure you already know that.
Dribble is really not the Render Engine but does allow you to use the 3Delight Rendering engine (plus others if Simon decided to).
Not only do you get a Pixar Standard renderer the price is just about perfect for everybody.
For Professional work it would be obvious to buy both, no question.
Currently the negative would be Dribble is only for the model side and you must renew the 3Delight license every 6 months
VRay is pricey for the average user.
Both do awesome renders. |

Thanks for the comments guys. :) I also have the use of Lightwave's renderer as an option. |

I feel slightly less beat up today but these muscles are still sore. We moved to Iowa City, so not out of state, but still a day of loading, 4 hours of driving, then unloading everything in an hour or so to keep the daylight and not annoy our new neighbours with moving noise! I just need a couple of days off. The only reason I'm on the computer is that I want to sit down in my desk chair - we don't have a couch yet :)
Comparing V-Ray and dribble/3Delight, I'd say they're about equal for general rendering. I do however think that my fur implementation is better than V-Ray's right now, and I'm about to add some support for the Darktree materials which V-Ray doesn't do. V-Ray is definitely faster overall, and much faster (and more predictable) for global illumination. I'm trying to improve dribble's GI features because I feel sure that 3Delight can do better than I'm managing, but it certainly won't be faster than V-Ray.
And I just want to add that the whole surprise "tS7 is free" event and the subsequent increased interest in dribble really has me jazzed to continue development. I know that Virtualight (and my virtuaout interface which then made it into tS itself) development stalled somewhat, but that's largely because the renderer itself had stopped development and I'd already implemented all the features. Renderman is a much more flexible beast and I could be refining and improving for a long time yet. |

Darktree!? simbiont! This is the kind of thing that makes it hard for me to ween myself away from modelside. (I keep meaning to spend more time in workspace I really do.) |

Well I took the plunge and purchased dribble and am looking forward to seeinf what it can do. There were two files when I purchased it, the first was dribble1.03.zip and the second dribble1.04wip061408.zip - is the second the update, or a beta version?
Also, had a bit of trouble with getting the 3Delight licence, I never received an email response from two of my email addresses after 5 days. When I contacted them they just told me to use a GMail or Yahoo address - a little weird, but the gmail account worked fine and the licence arrived in about 2 minutes. |

1.03 is the official release so far.
Simon released 1.04 beta for us to play with if we wanted to. Have fun with Dribble. Do a search here for "Dribble" for a lot of helpful settings etc.
Weird because I usually get responses back from 3Delight within minutes. |

I also bought it and had at first trouble with the 3delight license.
I have Vista Ultimate, and every time I booted, I got a new Hostid....
So I had to order the license several times, until I read in their forum, that you have to download an other version of their tools, that worked. :)
I can't really understand, that they don't have the tools up to date in their release, stupid thing IMHO.
Greetings,
Uwe ;) |

Would you mind being more specific, as in what version you downloaded and where, whether you're using 64bit vista etc? There's been a few problems with the licenses and it would potentially help others to know these things. |

I'm using Vista Ultimate 32, 3Delight is the normal retail (7.0.0.0 I think). When you order the license for 3Delight, you use the 'licutil hostid', to get your unique hostid. This is normally the MAC-Address of your network card.
In Vista you get every time you startup your pc, another hostid, that makes your license invalid.
with the updated 'licutil' (http://www.3delight.com/en/uploads/licserver.zip), the correct MAC-Address is choosen and so no more problems after reboot.
hope it's more clear now. :)
Greetings,
Uwe ;) |

Perfect.
I had no idea that this was an issue - there was one guy who never managed to get dribble working, I wonder if this was why? |

I think the updated version IS included in the 7.0.0.0 download, they do silent updates. But this definitely was an issue, so thanks for pointing it out! |

No, they were not. :(
The files in the release are dated 2007/11/29, the updated files for "licserver" and "licutils" are dated 2008/05/23 :)

Uwe ;) |

Weird, I thought this was fixed much earlier this year. I was one of the first people to report a Vista problem to them and we discovered it was the "virtual adapter" Vista creates. |

There are also free open-source Renderman compliant renderers like Pixie and Aqsis. Nvidia Gelato is also free now. Support for these would eliminate these nasty license server issues. |

Gelato's been discontinued, and 3delight is better than the others you mentioned imo. I'm not against the idea of expanding dribble to other renderers, but if 3delight is dropped I would be very unhappy.
The license has been an issue for some, but I think the only major issue has been vista, and that's easily fixed now we know why. The only other problems were fixed by reinstalling dribble and 3delight.
The license has never been an issue for me- I found it extremely easy to setup. I don't know why it's causing so much angst for non-vista users. |

imagine if dribble could support a more advanced version of Vray, with support for shaders only available in max or maya lol |

@transient I didn't want to imply dropping 3Delight, just that there are quality alternatives available. Many of them free.
True that Gelato development has stopped but it is still a renderer of the highest quality that was written by Mr. Renderman himself. The problem with it is it's almost impossible to use unless integrated properly into the modeling software. The other problem being you need an Nvidia graphics card.
As for the quality of Pixie and Aqsis, check this out:
http://picasaweb.google.com/dreamscapearts/MOSAICTestRenders
Microsoft makes noise about wanting to support open-source. Well, there is a world of all types of free renderers they could help integrate into tS. |

Like transient, I happen to think 3Delight is better overall than Aqsis or Pixie, despite the license requirement. I also use 3Delight with dribble because it provides a client RIB library, which allows for tighter integration when rendering as well as a more solid base for RIB writing.
I really like the AIR renderer ( http://www.sitexgraphics.com/ ), as it provides a lot of features as well as being considerably faster than some of the other Renderman renderers. Unfortunately the cheapest license is $375. |

Is it actually possible to find a Renderman renderer that does NOT provide a RIB library? |

Providing one and providing one that actually works like I need it to are not always the same ;)
At the last check, 3Delight was the only client library that worked well for all the features I use, as well as having the advantage of being able to render directly rather than go out through .rib files. Aqsis' lib would crash, and Pixie didn't have one at the time. It's been a while however, so I'll do another round of testing. |
