Do you know that I actually like the version 6 interface so far than the newer one?
I know it can't be helped as version 7 is not complete yet. |

You're not alone there! You'll find a few people of the same opinion on the forum. There are also tools on the model side that have not yet been moved over. I always thought the tS 6.6 interface was marvelous - the icon driven design philosophy just makes sense to me.
Having said that, after some experience I now find that the newer interface suits me much better. It's not quite so intuitive to use at first but the workflow enhancements are superb. Your response was certainly not uncommon at first and you'll find many existing users said the same thing until they got accustomed to the new way. Now there are many users who essentially ignore the model side (and tS 7.6 only emphasises this).
Of course it really depends on what you want to create. To really get comfortable with modeling in the Workspace I recommend Jack Edwards Organic Modeling Course - tS 7.6 has more tools than used in the course but the insight it will give into getting the most from modeling in workspace is invaluable. |

Initially, I felt the same way, but once I started getting more familiar with the tools and capabilities of the workspace, the workflow was so much more immediate that the modeler side started feeling clunky and cumbersome to me.
So don't confine yourself to one side or the other...give them both a chance. :) |

Workspace is a lot faster. It's now as tactile on my puny machine as 6.6, which is a huge win for the developers, well done.
If you click on a tool now the stack behaves the way you would expect. I'm a fan of the modeler interface, but I'm happy enough with the responsiveness of the new one to suck it down and move on. |

I found the best way to get used to Workspace is to actually go through a tutorial on it.
Jack Edwards has a Workspace-only Modeling course he is doing - go through it and you will find yourself much more comfortable.
Click this link to get the course (http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/WorkspaceOrganicModeling1.asp?Cate=Training&Subcate=Fundamental) which is, like them all - free. |

I so agree. Jack Edwards is the master at tutorials! http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/WorkspaceOrganicModeling1.asp?Cate=Training&Subcate=Fundamental
... as well as nowherebrain ... http://www.scatteredpixel.com/files/Page1.html ... I so love Workspace now. I like many was very leary at first but now I do not use the model side ever (expect of course to import obj or 3ds files). Once you get hooked you will see what I mean.

Thanks for the help guys. I learned something new with the video tutorial. And the add polygon tool is cool too.
However, my pc appears to be slowing down when im editing in Workspace. :(
Yet it runs okay when I'm in Model view.
Anyway, I could still take advantage of Truespace's rendering and animation capabilities while I model using another free software. |

Hi temujin143,
What video card are you using? Could be a driver issue, but it sounds like your video card might not be Shader 2.0 compliant or that you don't have DirectX 9.0c, which are required to run Workspace side. :( |

whoooops .. sorry if Iam getting off this threads topic. I should start a different thread.
Hi Mr Bones, Your egg shell animation is one of my big favorites. Of course you have many that I like. Here is my second favorite of yours ...

I love what you do with the lighting in many of your scenes.
Iam having a BLAST (hey hey) learning particle illusion. See this gif clip.

Installed the latest DirectX and Nvidia driver. It sped things up a bit.
But there are still some lighting setup that I could not use (like morning).
I'm using nvidia fx 5200 128mb. Pretty old video card :D
Oh by the way. Bloom effect is nice. |

Sorry to say that the FX5200 will not run workspace very well - the 5x series from NVIDIA only offered software emulated DX9.0c rather than true hardware DX9.0c, and the workspace requires the real thing to run smoothly.
The good news is that sub-$100 cards are available that will run tS very well, even a 6600 and up will do a good job for example. Eg 6800 for $80, a 7600 should be even better and only $65, the 8600 around $65 (again even better), etc. Seems that old tech is no longer actually cheaper than newer tech! The 8 series would seem to be the best price / performance ratio on the NVIDIA side just now (someone else would have to let you know about ATI cards, I'm not familiar with their numbering).
Of course the more you can afford, the better ;)
HTH!

High five, FX5200 buddy!
And Tom...now you tell us!
I recently replaced my factory original card with a FX5200.
And here I was so excited that I was dumping a 32 mb card for 256 mb.
Sigh...just as I think I'm catching up, technology out runs me again.
A little cheesed that it's not truely dx9 compatible, "it said so on the box!'
My maximum resolution is tS' minimum recommended resolution... I tried it last night but at 60 mhz the flicker made my eyeballs spastic... I need something faster to fight the flicker, so I had to drop the resolution down to something at 72 mhz.
Better start saving my pennies again. |

Spacekdet. your response made me laugh. LOL
but honestly I'm a bit disapointed. having found that my lowly FX 5200 card which runs realibly in any other apps and high end mmorpgs is not good enough for workspace. ouch. it hurts.
on the bright side, I could still render using Truespace and the rendering is still fast.

MMORPGS by their nature of wanting to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, generally have lower hardware requirements than other real-time 3D apps. Only the latest MMORPGs have relatively high requirements (eg LOTRO, and Conan in particular).
It does say so on the box, a shame that. If you run Half Life 2 however, it will tell you that it is switching to emulation mode as the card doesn't fully support the minimum specs of 9.0c and pixelshader2.0. BTW first person shooters are a better judge of hardware specs, they generally are sold to hardcore gamers who keep their rigs very up to the minute, and in that genre you'll find games that are quite demanding on hardware to get the best out of them. tS7.6 is kind of in the same position, opting to deliver a high end experience - though the baseline is that any card released in the last 3 years will work fine (the 5x series is older than that, even though you'll still find it on the shelves of your local supermarket / supermart / superstore)
HTH!
Tom
PS - we felt that was a fair baseline, as a line had to be drawn someplace. With cards now in the $50 price range that will run tS well, we thought that was a reasonable spec requirement, a good compromise in getting great results for a very large percentage of people, without cutting out too many people, or cutting out too many results. If we'd gone for DX10 as a minimum spec, then you'd have to buy an even higher spec and newer card, for instance. |

Have you tried experimenting with the Workspace Hardware settings? You might be able to acheive a better performance by lowering some of the settings. I can not suggest any but it may be worth a try. Look in the Manual - Chapter2 User Interface| Page 83 |

We tamed it for tS7.6 though. I like the look of the UI and you still have a revamped tS6.6 UI bolted on...now don't tell me you think the 6.6 icons are better than the cleaned up model side ones in 7.6...;) |

If you are, or anyone else is, looking for a decent video card then I would fully recommend a Radeon 4850 - they are cheap and they are as powerful as a Geforce 9800GT. I paid about 170 euro for it with shipping and for a shader 4.1 DX10.1 card, pretty good if you ask me. It was even a decent brand - gigabyte. They do warn you about touching them if you need to remove it however...leave it a good 10 minutes as they run at about 80c as standard.
And it fixed all my vista issues. I can finally play NWN2 - bought it 2 years ago and never been able to run it until now....yeah...!! |
