Hi All; I have ts6.6 now and I'm working on a character tutorial I found in the manual. Where can I find the right color for skin? Yes human skin. haha. Attached is a picture of what i have so far. any help is appreciated. Thank You. Oh! Also why does my sweeps turn backwards. After making a sweep if I have to undo it for what ever reason and then redo it the sweep goes 180 degrees the wrong way.??

If you look in the material libraries that come with tS 6.6 you will see one called Sandras Mat. Open that library and there's a reasonable skin material there - good enough to get you started anyway.

I don't know the answer to your sweep question, I always hit the sweep button the right mouse drag till the swept face is in the position I want.

Hope This Helps.

Yeah, Sandra skin is pretty cool.

Regarding the sweeping, you have the same problem we all had when we began. Well, maybe not all but me for sure. :D

I would only model in the one window, that was usually perspective. If you model in a four window mode or at least with another Window open so you can have a different view, then confusion on which direction to drag becomes less frequent. And yeah, the coordinate system in tS seems bass ackwards to me to. Just look at the way an imported UV map comes in upside down...

Hi dr22,

Unfortunately skin isn't a single color, it's translucent so the light bounces around inside and picks up color from blood vessels and such as well as it's normal surface color variation. You can see this effect by holding your hand up to a bright light.

How to create realistic skin in 3d is an age old question that most still struggle with today. Generally Sub Surface Scattering (SSS) shaders are used to simulate the light bouncing and generate more realistic results. I'm not aware of any SSS shaders available for tS 6.6 though, perhaps someone else could help you with that.

While not as important when creating cartoony envirionments, another thing to consider is that no surface really has uniform color, bump, or reflectance. Shiny surfaces for example will be dull where there is dirt or scratches. And worn materials might have areas where they have been worn smooth and thus shiny by use. Also if an object is out in the sun a lot, maybe the sunward sides are more faded then the more shadowed sides.

Here's a link that might help:

Hope that helps!

Whupps, forgot to mention that you will need to manually create UV maps in order to do these more advanced mapped texturing techniques. For doing reflection and specular mapping you will need to use the Mapped Phong or Mapped Metal shaders:

Of course usually the Luminance channel isn't one you need to change -- I usually leave it at zero unless the material is producing light. But like mentioned above using maps for the specular and reflectance channels is VERY useful.

Both ShaderLab and ShaderMagic have fake SSS shaders which you might want to try. They're a little fiddly and you have to enter light positions and stuff rather than just 'use' them so I can't help much past this as I've only played with them briefly but no more, but I'm sure someone with patience will be able to get decent results out of them.
