Hi all.

Just thought I would post after my very first online collaboration meeting at the animators club, last night.

To be honest as an online collaboration "virgin" I was a little apprehensive as to how complicated this realtime "get together" thing was going to be, not having tried it before, and being somewhat technically challenged ;)

Well all I can say is "WOW", so simple to connect, and what a blast.... Fantastic fun, AND I learned a bunch of stuff too!

As expected everyone was very friendly, and as helpful as ever, 3DFrog fielding questions from us as he demonstrated rigging, IK, setting up locks etc.

Watching someone actually go through the process is hard to beat as a fast way of learning. Being able to ask questions there and then is just fantastic!

So here we were with a rigged frog and then it got EVEN better. We discovered that not only could the frog be animated in realtime, but that we could all take 1 limb each and animate it, again, all at the same... Man that was a blast, what a laugh. I guess in theory we could have keyframed the anim as we each controlled a limb, but thats for next time I guess.

Just as I thought well it can't get any better.. IT DID!!

MrBones arrived, and brought along some of his BVH anims to try in realtime.

It was a test as BVH had not tried been tried in realtime collaboration before, but it worked brilliantly!!.

I mean the potential of this to me was just HUGE. In realtime he dropped a boned character into our shared view, clicked on a BVH clip, and we hit our play button, and that was it... we had a realtime character dancing right in front of uss.... What a blast.

THEN

3DFrog bought out his horse... lol, man that thing is a great cartoon character, what a laugh. Right in front of us he set off an animated running cycle.

The horse also had the new morph tool applied to its mouth. It worked VERY well.. as smooth as silk. In realtime we could control its mouth opening and closing simply using a slider, doesnt get any easier than that! The possibilites there are just massive.

So here we were in realtime with 2 dancing characters, and a running horse, all going at the same time, and being edited, weight painted, etc right there and in realtime. Around us we had some billboards with rigging questions posted on em, and at times the scene lights were being adjusted to suit the content. I guess there were maybe 10 ish people all getting involved at the same time.. all texting, animating, editing etc at the same time.

YOU JUST GOTTA TRY THIS REALTIME COLLABORATION>>>it's totally brilliant!!!

Many thanks to all involved

For anyone that couldn't attend and is interested in what we learned last night, I will post an edited summary of the process we went through, in the Tech thread. It will be titled "Animators meeting summary 24/8/8"

Cheers

IK Handel

I very much wish I could have attended! unfortunately for me, it conflicts with travel time to my mom's so I just don't get a chance :o

However, hooray! and maybe can also see some of this in one of the Scriptors' meetings ;)

YAY FOR TRUESPACE!!!

and thank you Caligari! :jumpy:

Thanks for the overview! :) I was not able to attend the meeting, my TS rigging skills are very dated with the new release, it's great to see Frog's work flow itemized out and his techniques/tips in writing... :) saves me from having to post these same questions in the coming weeks :D

Thanks Frog, Dele... and everyone involved the info will really help my rigging.

If you've not done any rigging in the new tS bones system you are in for a very pleasant surprise - with the updated vertex weight painting tools and the morph tools character animation suddenly became vastly easier.

I think I may have done a pinch of TS rigging over the last couple of years... definitely much more behaved than previous versions :D I had very little to do with 7.6 though (the testers did a great job! and never forget the wonderful job the developer's always do)

Thaks IK. This was by far the best meeting for the animators club now we can use bones in shared space. We will have much more interesting meetings now. I been waiting for this for a year and it finally came. And thanks to caligari for making ts free so we can have many people at the meetings discussing animation. I am in heaven :)
