It is with great sadness that I learned that professor Randy Pausch, professor at Carneghie Mellon and the author of Alice, a free 3D educational programming environment, died on Friday at the age of 47. It was only a day after we released trueSpace7.6 as a free product, I know Randy would rejoice in this news. It would be presumptous of me to call Randy a friend but I knew him well and we both shared passion for expanding interactive 3D graphics outside of traditional Film/Video/CAD/Games markets. Over the years we exchanged our experiences on Alice and trueSpace in Siggraph workshops and private discussions. You could say our motivations were quite close.

For this reason I think it is fiting to dedicate trueSpace7.6 release to the memory of Randy Pausch.

A beautiful dedication Roman - I don't know Randy but I'm sure he would have every reason to feel extremely proud!

His Lecture entitled "Last Lecture" became quite a hit on YouTube. I just watched it a couple of hours ago. It was quite good. The theme is "Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" but he talks a lot about his life in 3d technology, teaching Virtual Reality, working with Disney's imagineers, and other stuff. All in all, I found it interesting and inspiring. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.

Ah of course! I knew I recognised the name! I've seen "the Last Lecture" and was most impressed. I share many of the sentiments he expressed so poignantly.

The world is much richer place for having had Randy in it.

he was even very popular here in german. I watched his last lecture in television and today the news from his death :(
Very sad espacially there I lost my uncle 2 years ago with the same illness, pankreas cancer, horrible to see a strong men destruction and his request for a rope.
3 month after diagnosis and he was dead.

My sorrow to the familiy and a good dedication from Roman.

I remember downloading Alice and it was the first realtime shaders that I experienced on a macintosh no less. Im thinking that the date was around 1994 or earlier.. I could be wrong , but I do remember the extreme facination I experienced working with the program and objects.

I had no idea, that this was the man responsible for the inspriration.
