I was just wondering if the new "Free" version of Ts is fully licensed, or is it a trial etc. ...
I am working for a big company (Alcoa) who purchased Ts version 6.6 along with all of the video training exercises more than a year ago, and I have been training myself (with help of the training videos) on how to use this software. We currently own 1 license for the 6.6 version and my boss wants to start working with this software now too...
If we download and install this new version, is it legitimately licensed for a user at a company to use? I just don't want to get into any trouble if I go ahead and implement this new version onto my bosses PC for him to play with. |

Don't know how a group license on freeware works.
Contact or message Thomas Grimes here on the forums, I'm sure he can tell you. |

Surely, worst case, you can just register TS 7.6 here at the Caligari site under your bosses name, then download it at his PC and install it??
I dont think their should be any issue with the free ver of 7.6 in this regard anyway - company or not

From another thread:
No license limitation is imposed. The software can be used commercially. There is no longer any paid version available (if you find any link that takes you to a purchase, or even appears to suggest there is one, do let me know so I can remove it!)
Thanks!

The license is free for commercial use, but for large group installations, please contact customer services via email. The license you will note applies to installing the one registered copy on one machine. If you plan on installing to groups of machines, get in touch with us via email and we'll help you on that :)
Note that this is not about charging or adding a cost - rather, we need to work with you on how best to register (one registration, multiple registration, and if one registration we will need to know that that applies to 6 or 20 or 150 computers for instance, for support purposes, etc)
Thanks!

Not to pry or to be nosey, but I can't help but wonder what the business model Caligari is following.... It boggles my mind how you can afford to all of a suddenly give away all of your software and tuitorials for free.
Do you guys plan on sticking around for a while and possibly going back to a paid service in the future, or are there other profitable entities at work here that I don't notice? |

Bear in mind that Caligari is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft. This changes the picture of "what is profitable" since you are talking about the overall company now, not Caligari as an individual single entity. This changes makes it possible for tS to become free.
There are the things you might guess, that Microsoft is not really that reliant on sales of trueSpace for its profit :) And trueSpace is of course already being put to use on projects, with more to come, so there are plenty of ways in which tS is generating both value, and even just regular old profit.
HTH!

Great questions in this thread. Great answers too...very interesting that Microsoft "owns" (?) Caligari now, so to speak or literally, whichever it boils down to.
I'm curious as to where Microsoft will take it (tS Home, tS Premium, tS Ultimate). Just kidding. Or am I? ;)
I bet userbase will grow exponentially now and become THE core tool for games developers and other suitable 3D applications. If anyones work deserves to be taken to the next level like this, it's Roman's. A visionary product is apparently heading to a new plateau within the software industry. When Microsoft comes knocking, you know you've got something going for you.
tS is coming together so wonderfully. I'm truly impressed with what this last evolution has brought, especially in terms of solidifying what already exists. Outstanding work Caligari! Great job!
I just got through installing tS 7.6 and the new VRay on my aging P4 2.66MHz Fujitsu 64MB dedicated video with 1GB RAM (because I just couldn't wait) and I've got to say it even runs beautifully on this old machine.
Anyway, I'm going to start fiddling around with it more now - I can just feel it is so much more powerful. It's incredible...really!!! |
