I have been looking for a camtasia/screencam equivalent with a less expensive price and came across this:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/

It is actually pretty good and also generates SWF as well...

Thanks Brotherx

I'll give it a try later when I get a chance.

Saw this before: from their website:

Due to an internet-wide leak of the Camtasia Studio 3 software that was intended exclusively for PC Plus readers, this offer has unfortunately been withdrawn. However, we encourage you to test out a free 30 day copy of the latest version, Camtasia Studio 5. Thank you for your understanding and interest in TechSmith

I use CamStudio and Camtasia. CamStudio isn't as useful when it comes to capturing windows (you have to draw to select it I believe, rather than just click the window), but still does a fine job.

Camtasia I still use for the editing afterward and turning the screen cap into a final WMV.

All the screen capture videos I do are done with CamStudio. Including the Organcis course. It's the only one I've found that works well with Vista x64 and doesn't cause TS to behave oddly. Camtasia never worked well for me after version 4.1 or so and CamStudio being free made the choice rather easy. ;)

Windows Media Encoder is available from Microsoft for free and can be edited with Windows Movie Maker. At least I think this is more or less the same as CamStudio (never used it).

CamStudio is screen cap software - it grabs what is happening on screen and saves it to file. I don't think either WME or Movie Maker do that step. They should let you then take the AVI from CamStudio and recompress it into something web friendly - generally you capture to AVI with a lossless codec like Lagarith or TechSmith, which gives files way too large to post on the net, and you then compress those captured videos to WMV or smaller lossy AVIs.

Note that when capturing screens with large amounts of detail changing each frame, eg when I do my Virtual Earth fly throughs, I've found that the lossless codecs can't keep up in frame rates and drop down to 2 or 3 fps, while using a lossy compression with Windows Video 9 will keep up much better (but loses color depth). I find the higher frame rate but lower color depth preferable in those cases.

Either way, you'll still need something like CamStudio to do the actual screen capturing :) You pick in there what codec you want it to use while capturing, and away you go.

Actually, that is what WME does. You can either define a rectangle on the screen or just use a certain window and capture to file. A problem is I think it only supports .wmv which may be an issue for some uses. Also at high quality the files get pretty big. When I learn to do new things with software I've taken to capturing with WME since otherwise I'll forget what I just learned.

Windows Media Encoder is very useful. That's what I was using to convert the lossless AVIs from Techsmith to WMV codecs before I purchased Sony Vegas. Since getting Vegas I haven't had to use WME anymore. Vegas handles all the editing and encodes directly to WMV.

I use Snagit and Camtasia studio.

Snagit is the down and dirty version, saves in AVI format. But has tons of other options for screen capture. Can save Web pages with links and images, time delay captures, etc.

Both are TechSmith products.

Jack all those encoders area jungle for me !Those i want to use dont work

because i probably always dont have the right sizes like the div X codec....

the techsmith are to big ...my mpg 4 cries its a trial thats over and when

I use something in the long list of codecs that works and I take

the filesize down to what i can post I get pixelart !

Could someone guide me to an overall best solution for smallest size

versus best quality and the setting ...

I use virtual dub and as a screen grab Camstasia 3...

Here's a webpage from TechSmith on reducing file size. Very thorough.

This DirectShow filter works in Virtualdub and will allow you to use pretty much all the modern codecs:

http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

(It'll also play most video and audio formats in WMP)

WMV and H264 are the best codecs for compression size vs. quality. But you still need to store your originals in a lossless format like CamStudio's, Techsmith's, or Lagarith or you can't go back an edit them without out significant video degradation.

Here's a link to a great free H264 encoder/decoder:
