It is PC World, probably the largest PC outlet in Britain...but yeah, the staff know nothing about the technical stuff normally. |

I have to say that an XFX Geforce was the one I had issues with under vista...they do funny things to the board to squeeze extra performance out of them. they've probably resolved it in the new models. |

Asus boards North and south bridge get really hot.
My Asus Formula Maximus also has problems with 4gigs or beyond in
some Linux situations, I have to disable Memory remap feature in BIOS then im left with 3.2 gigs. (watch out for this one) was a HUGE headache
i think a handful of other Boards ( at the time) are this way
ATI 3870 is pretty good...nothing to compare to at the time,
But looking at the GPU through Catalyst ...while do some stuff in truespace
i notice it uses at lot of the GPU... more so than other programs ive tested, which is cool
so Nvidia may have an edge at this.? --- Physics
Decide on your CPU first. it helped me decide were to go from there quicker.
Try and stick to motherboards guild-line for RAM
After all that deciding. Google each component...and read reviews Pro's | Con's
I just started to learn fly fishing,
reminds me that every component can be better or worse for the overall performance |

I agree about the north bridges getting rather hot on ASUS nVidia boards. To overvolt mine to 1.57 volts I had to install an aftermarket active copper heat pipe cooling solution to it. So I've got aftermarket coolers on both my CPU and Northbridge. Then again, I'm running an 80% or so overclock, so I guess it's not really surprising. lol... :p |

Having found a good home for my XFX 7900 GT should I need to, I just reserved a XFX 9800GT 512mb at my local PC store for £99.
They seem to be a re-invented 8800GT but with a few more bells and whistles and 'double' the piplelines of the 9600 (112 vs 64).
Anyone familiar with these boards and would they represent a huge leap from the 7900GT.
In case you wondered, I have a case, mobo and memory spare-add a CPU and the 7900 and my daughter gets a new PC..:D
Unless the 9800GT is not so good in which case, I am leaving it,
Store close in an hour if there is any quick advice....:D
Ta in advance...:) |

I picked the card up for £99, not noticing that they are selling the Radeon HD4850 for £30 more.
I hear that card is very nice.
Anyway, I can return it for a full refund if I decide not to go with it.
Question is though, would tS see any real benefit from the DX10 support/shader 4.0 and PhysX?
I did promise myself a Radeon next time but the new drivers and physx support for the Nvidia also seems nice.
Oh well....will give it some thought tonight and see what it will take to complete my daughters PC.
Any thought very welcome. Cheers in advance guys. |

I think the main things about the 4850 was that it had 1/2 power requirements over the 9800 GT. Also it is dx10.1 and the only card that will support it when launched - event the new 2x0 series nvidia stuff.
performancewise it's a touch faster than the 9800's overall.
The main down-side is it runs hot...like fry an egg hot...80c is the idle temperature - my old 7900 GT extreme used to idle at about 50 and flat-out at 60...
It fixed all my video problems so i love it. I can run games now, before it wasn't happening in vista. The 7900 was a fantastic card for XP...sucked in vista. |

I decided to go with the 9800GT after all. It just fitted in my rig and runs perfectly so far. The Ati card was a good inch longer and would not fit in there so no choice really. Also, I got the latest drivers with the added Physx and the demo's look amazing!!
Most demanding game I play is Bioshock nowadays and it looks gorgeous and smooth with everything on max so I am happy.
As for tS7.6, well I turned everything on max, now have 8X AA, put bloom and sampling on then loaded the church scene.
Absolutely eats it for breakfast-no slowdown at all and looks lovely. I would love to try a scene that brings a PC to its knees to see how it copes!!
I found a new home for my 7900GT (cheers Stoker!) so I am well chuffed. This card is a nice upgrade until I need a new rig in a few years and everything runs fine so far.
Highly recommended really.
Cheers for all your support guys and gals, helped me a lot...:D |
