Yip IK,

Next 4 nights - gigs and stuff. That DIMDIM Collab System has possibilities. If you happen to have two PC's on a network you can roadtest it. Just log in / set up meeting on one, then when in the meeting up top is the ROOM NAME with your alias probably, click the alias to copy a URL to send as an invite to people. Go to the other PC on your network and pop this URL into the browser - now log in on that machine as someone else .... try out the features that way!

Heres some more to try out:

http://epresence.tv/

Also in DIMDIM their is Voice so maybe SKYPE not needed ... one less bandwidth eater!

Ill be reading here and watching progress after gigs

Cheers

Aidan

Hi Guys,

Had a session tonight over at the Realsoft 3D IRC, one of the guys their into this also. We tried out the DIMDIM app. Very nice AND it has voice - so no Skype needed. One big disadvantage though - when sharing the screen it seems to have a prob with OGL/DIRECTX. He could see the Model side fine in old DX, but when I switched to the Workspace side - he could see the icons etc around the edge but not the workspace itself - greyed out.

We also tried it with Realsoft. Same thing, in OGL mode you couldnt see the workspace but when we switched to GDI mode ( Wireframe ) the model appeared. Maybe one for the TS inhouse guru's :)

If DIM DIM could be got to work it would be alot simpler than Yugma - no software to install etc - just give link out and anybody with a browser and flash plug installed can join in.

Now one thing - it could have been his vid card also, so any messing with DIM DIM and if a success please talk about it here,

Cheers

off to gig ( wedding )

Capturing real-time screen image from 3D can be tricky, and some apps don't do it from in games and in tS. Sounds like that is what is happening here, that those apps simply won't work with realtime displays like the workspace.

At least you have one app that does though!

HTH!

with screen grabs and screenrecorders I sometimes had the problem with active and not active windows sometimes it just need a tap on them before

you record to make the window active.

Just a thought that was always wrong when mine failed..

I think I like yugma/skype. Can you have video of each other and

the screen capture at the same time?

waht.....I'd have to install a flash plugin in my browser? That doesn't

really sound simpler. The yugma to skype plugin was real easy to install.

Hi Tyler,

What I meant was that DIMDIM uses flash, so the standard flash plugin that you need in your browser to watch flash content and sites on the net is all you need. Chances are your browser has this already, without it any flash content in a web site would be unavailable to you. I wasnt talking about a special flash plugin.

Also DIMDIM does not have any client app to be installed AND it has voice built in - you do not need a VOIP app at all. With Yugma you have two seperate client apps - Skype and Yugma, possibly more bandwidth needed.

Finally to use DIMDIM you just sign up ( 2 seconds ), start a meeting and send the invite URL to whoever you want. The other participants do not need any special software either - its all done through their browser.

Cheers

Looks like we have been beavering away at the research in parallel Aidan:p

Ok some other apps with promise

YuuGuu

Mikogo

Yakkle

ScreenStream (all one word)

(Aidan grab these 4 when you get a min)

NCH free toolbox.. Not sure this option seems a bit clunky Includes various seperate apps from telephoney , screen stream, and other bits n bobs.

Apols for not supplying links, need to get more organised in record keeping.. Do a quick google they all come up at 1st page.

Some of em allow session recording. Some of em have annotation capability.

Some have built in voice, ALL are free, All have screen stream. One of them is almost like a substitute for a messenger type app all integrated into one chat, voice, screen capture, annotation etc all rolled into one.

Have dloaded em all, all straightforward very small dloads, fast setup (less than a minute)

Guess we need to run em through their paces.

As an aside I have unearthed a load of free realtime screenstreaming apps that only support a max of 3 users, some of em are great quality, just not capable of supporting the potential no of users we might need.

Have also downloaded the DIMDIM opensource server (1.5 gig) will need to get that put through its paces when the opportunity arises.

PS One of the apps listed above specifically mentions that it DOES support Dual Screen! All 4 look to have fair potential to be contenders though. Am discounting NCH as too techy for average user.

Tyler at the minute we are avoiding webcam type capture running in parallel with screen streaming simply because it eats up more bandwidth.

Some of the apps we are testing will support webcams etc, it's just not a criteria that for us is important, as our search is for hi res screen stream with minimum TS interferance, and minimal realtime delay, capable for approx 10+ users. Obviously security and ease of install ( if there is one) and use are among the criteria too.

Of course once any of these apps are installed or registered theres nothing to stop having 1 to 1 sessions with a friend where bandwidth for a webcam as well as screen streaming isn't as big an issue:D Just not on our list.

Hope that helps

IK

PS I believe the YUUGUU app can also be installed through skype, though not a requirement. (Possibly ScreenStream as well) As yet we have not had time to test these all these apps. Am reasonably sure we have now unearthed all the main contenders. Lots more testing and evaluating to go before we can be sure that we have a stable app that does what we want (for free)
