Quick question about still images; If I model and setup my scene only using trueSpace but export it to another package for rendering, does this still constitute a legal submission?
Thanks |

If you mean another full 3D app, then no. If you mean V-Ray for example, then yes. Since rendering is such a main part of making an image, rendering it outside of tS products would disqualify the entry.

Tom what about using Kerkythea or other stand-alone render engines? |

im pretty sure that the use of other renderers should be ok, I dont see how its fair that we should be limited to like 2 renderers, I think it should be that Truespace is the Primary modelling package used for the image, i.e. model in truespace, but render elsewhere if need be, |

Tom what about using Kerkythea or other stand-alone render engines?
If it were not it would close its door to future development !
And Dribble ?

I think that what Tom is saying is that if you model your scene using truespace but then export it to a full blown 3D app like 3ds max and spend a whole lot of time tweaking your material, your lighting, your texturing and maybe doing a bit more modeling while you're there seems to defeat the purpose of using trueSpace as your primary tool but on the other side, if I already own another rendered (either stand alone or part of another 3d app) and would like to use it, why shouldn't I? |

If you read Toms post he said FULL so I would read it that non full
packages that only do renders would be OK ???? !!! Or do I misinterpret ß

Dunno if this is still relevant but in the past Roman has asked me to submit pictures that were rendered in Vue - the key was that all of the modeling, the UVing and much of the texture work all came from trueSpace.
This meant that the images showed trueSpace's capabilities which is what was wanted in a trueSpace gallery.

And rightly so IMO Ambrose - I was well outclassed that month! |

Yes, when I submitted my pictures last month, all the modeling and texturing was ported from TS, then I used vue to render with. Except the grass in Stonehenge. That was instanced in Vue. |

hi Tom
rendering in another full 3D app doesn´t imply "rendering outside tS products"?..i don´t get it

You can render in an external render engine, so long as it is just a render engine. This makes V-Ray, Dribble, Virtualight, Kerkythea etc all valid.
You can't render in an external 3D app that also features modeling and creation tools, as then it is not a standalone render engine.
The first can be counted as "rendering inside trueSpace" as it is rendering with a render engine that is compatible with tS. The second counts as rendering outside of trueSpace as you have moved to another full 3D application to do it. So rendering in another full 3D app does imply rendering outside tS products, that was indeed the point :) That's what you are not allowed to do with your entry to the contest.

This is then presumably a bit of a murky area for 'landscape' apps like Vue and Bryce? Not that it affects me, but understood that modelling in TS and rendering in one of these apps had been allowed before...? Or do these not count as full apps as they are primarily for landscapes and not for 'full modelling'? |

Those have been previously allowed, but now with that new restriction in place we'd disallow rendering in Vue or Bryce and request rendering in tS (or related stand-alone render only render engine) instead.

Like I said before, I've submitted Vue rendered stuff built in trueSpace and it's been accepted but I always took it for granted that the Vue renders were not going to win me anything and were accepted because they illustrated how a modeling prog like tS could integrate with a Landscape renderer like Vue.
I also have LightWave 9.2 but I would never consider rendering atrueSpace model in Lightwave and submitting that - I mean why would I? trueSpace can produce awesome art without having to use other modelers. |

Ooops! Cross posted you there Tom:D. Thanks for that clarification. Realistically there is no longer a need for Vue renders though given the wide choice of rendering options we now have with tS 7.x. It was different before when we really only had LightWorks ( and Vitua out). |

Agreed Wizard. It was a tough decision, because in real-life workflows, you may well use several apps, even to tackle modeling and similar, but we decided it was only fair to keep it clear-cut in the ruling with minimal confusion, so now that there are a selection of stand-alone render-only render engines that tS can use, we elected to limit contest entries to those.
It's by no means a small list of course, like you say choices are now wide! Real-time from workspace, V-Ray, Lightworks, Virtualight, Kerkythea and Dribble, with post processing options available in Photoshop if you use Lightworks and PSD rendering - every chance to make very exciting and diverse work and achieve the render output you are looking for!

Cheers for the clarification - didn't actually affect me anyway as I only have old versions of Bryce and Vue and don't use them in this way, but could see that it might affect others like W!zard, Kena etc.
As a clarification - I assume there's no problem with me still submitting tS5 renders?! :o I'm already registered as far as the forums and a few previous submissions go, so assume that's still allowed? |

Sure, just set the time machine to forward, grab a copy, jump back and enter with your new-fangled software (don't forget to grab a machine it can run on while jumped ahead)!
Thanks!
