...Well the virtual version anyway!:p

Wizitch Tower (http://maps.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.7rdn2pzcp8fj_Wizitch%20Tower_Wzrds%20Firs t%20VE%20structure%20-%20made%20in%20trueSpace%207.6___&encType=1)

Wzrds First VE structure - made in trueSpace 7.6. This is really my first attempt at exporting something to VE. It seems to have worked OK from this end without any difficulties - feel free to visit my tower which is located in the virtual version of where I actually live.

I'm not necessarily after feedback about the modeling or anything - I'm just curious if other people can see it which would let me know I've set it up correctly.

not sure it is working Wiz...took me to the right place but nothing seems to show. Does it perhaps need to be approved?

Hmmn - The model is not huge and hard to see when looking down on it. You need to zoom right in close. The model is in the same 'collection' as the push pin (which should link to a photo of the River).

I would presume that if you can access the photo you should also be able to see the model.

(Shuffles off to re-read manual.)

Ok maybe this link (http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTSN&cp=-43.515778~172.670423&style=h&lvl=18&tilt=-89.875918865193&dir=0&alt=495.63391108159&cam=-43.515787~172.670423&scene=-1&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&cid=44D6C4A19DCCB5A0!101&encType=1) is the one you need. (Note to self - read what the manual says not what you think it's going to say!).

The manual also says "there may be a slight delay between you being able to view the object on Virtual Earth and others being able to view the object. If someone is unable to view the object soon after you published it, they should try again a little later." - which is partly helpful but not very specific with regard to defining "a little later". Shrugs.

Please try this second second link and see if the results are any better - while you do that I'll run outside and start waving madly at the sky!;)

I think it must've been the link as that is working.

I added the last one to a collection so let me check it

Aha! Excellent - thank you Brotherx - it must have been me waving in the driveway that did it!!;)

For anyone else out there wanting to try this - posting their models on VE you just need to follow the directions as written in the manual - that's all I did (eventually anyway:o).

Pretty cool! Nice modeling.

As a curiosity, I was playing with the menu on the right hand side and was able to also dl a Google earth kzm file location for this... kinda odd considering this is MS version :D I was not able to see the model on Google Eaarth though, just the location.

Neat stuff.

Hi all,

Yes you have to grab just the right link for sharing your 3D objects. There are three locations you can do a "share" or "export to" but only one works with the 3D object that I know of! Other results are the user sees just a pushpin, the right place, the right bookmark, but no 3D object.

I'll be "bitesizing" the VE process today, so we'll see how far I get! I'll start sharing those videos covering the various VE export items you need to be aware of.

Meanwhile, that tower is really good! Came in nicely to VE, thanks for sharing!

HTH!

Thanks Rich - that's pretty cool. The Google Satellite image is slightly higher res then the VE one and was taken in summer. The VE shot was taken in winter and so you can't see the trees along the riverbank so well.

Actually I've spent part of the evening with Google Earth open on one screen and VE on the other, comparing photos of various places. Good fun, you can see the world but not need any nasty jabs or malaria pills!

@Tom - The manual was pretty good on the VE export process. I just followed along with it (except the last bit about using the right sharing link!). All the info is there though and pretty straight forward.

@Stienie - LOL - I couldn't manage a whole castle Bob - just a tower which I made for an earlier animation;).

So come on folks - load up a model in VE at your address so we can come check out your place! All you MMC participants using tS7.6 are halfway there already.

Very nice W!ZARD, first link I wasn't able to see your tower, second link was good. I had to load the beta viewer too. This can lead in such possibilities, whole communities could be built by many folks.

I have not tried this yet, but is it possible to have the camera fly down to the location and do a fly-by? That would be awesome! Google Earth can fly from above Earth to your location and model but no fly-by that I am aware of :)

Cool stuff... so we can make our house look very big and beautiful than? :D Ohhh baby, I might have to play around with this some :)

Thanks for the inspiration.

I'd love to try it but as I noted in my blog (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/blog.php?b=251) Virtual Earth has updated itself into a non-functional state. No amount of uninstalling/reinstalling has resolved the problem. 2D map mode works but 3D mode reveals a plain gray globe. Thus, no 3D models. It used to work, I guess it was fun while it lasted!

How about a nice screenshot of what it's supposed to look like?

You can do a simulated fly by in google earth by clicking and drag on the terrain, and then release. Depending on how fast you do this, it causes the earth to spin, and thus you fly over the landscape. You can record the effect with camtasia.

A second way, is go to destination 1, and then enter destination 2, but it does cause you to fly out into space.

PS: have you tried changing your view to space? Google earth has probably all the hubble telescope photos mapped, and if you zoom in some of those nebulas can be very pretty to look at. You can do the spin the earth type fly by in space too, and watch galaxcys fly by. You can get different speeds too, just move your hand slowly as you release and make earth/space spin.

I forgot, you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard in google earth to fly over the landscape. Use the tilt control to adjust the view to be more like what you would see from an air plane.

I believe such flybys are possible I've not explored that far yet.

I do agree that it's quite inspirational though - I'm thinking about erecting a wizard statue next to my tower at some point!!

Google Earth has a cool Flight Sim feature that's a bit of fun - it's a hidden Easter Egg type of thing. Can't compare with MS Flight Sim of course but you can take off from various virtual versions of real airports including my local airport here in Christchurch which means you can go and crash into the Southern Alps if you want!

I know competition is good for development and so on but I can't help thinking it would be cool if the best features of GE and VE were combined into a super Google Virtual Earth. Actually combining this with astronomy software like Celestia (which is free and so much fun it should be classified as a sin!) to create a super-duper-uber Virtual Universe.....

Hmn - too many coffee's this morning.

Some technical info...

The tS VE-Setup Scene (as taken from the supplied tS Scenes library) is 568 KB in total

The Tower - which I basically just grabbed from one of my own RsObj Libraries - weighs in at 4.26 MB with just over 4000 Poly's.

I used the WorkSpace Boolean Union tool to simplify the hierarchy - the final Tower was just 2 sub-objects.

In the VE Export dialogue I selected Compress for the Geometry (as described in the manual) and .jpg for the Textures.

Here's a couple of screenies - the first shows the Tower just before Export to VE - the 2nd shows it as it appears in VE.

Personally I think it's totally cool!!

Don't forget that with the new Gallery category, everyone has extra opportunities to win prizes with VE 3D collections and objects (hope you'll be entering this one Wizard!). Read more here:

http://www.caligari.com/Gallery/VirtualEarth_Gallery/Announcement.asp

To make it easier to enter I'm working on some Bitesize videos about going from tS to VE, the first of those is out now:

Thanks!
