I almost never post because I have so little time to play with 3D art, but for once I have something to show. I'm working on a 3D model for a game (actually a tech demo for now) I'm working on that uses Microsoft's XNA Game Studio Express. The model is a fictional space fighter I've created called the YF-20 Tigershark. It is based upon the X-20 DynaSoar from the late 50s/early 60s. The idea is that the USAF has revived the X-20 program into the YF-20 to participate in SDI.
I'm currently working out the model details, and the image shown is the start of the payload bay and the International Low-Impact Docking System (ILDS, pronouced eyelids) port. In the background are inter-stage adapters for the Titan and Merlin boosters (Merlin is a fictional rocket booster I'm also working on). What I'm trying to do is have a detailed model with its interior fleshed out for artistic shots, and a simpler model for the game. The fun part is doing some CAD-like drawing to make it look like the YF-20 would actually work.
The texture is just a placeholder... I have to figure out how to break up the model and unwrap it so I can texture it in Photoshop.
The second image is an earlier version of the model as seen in my tech demo. |

Cool idea! I always liked those early test models like the X20. The aerodynamics of the shape of those winged spaceships looks like a cross between a teardrop and a paper dart!
Please keep us informed of your progress as you go - I for one, will be very intewrested to see it progress. Looks like you are off to a good start. |

Finally, I get some time to make an update! It took me awhile to figure out how to make the cutouts for the payload bay and the docking port bay, and figure out how the ILIDS (international Low-Impact Docking System) would work. Then I had to figure out how to make the doors, but now it is working. Here, the YF-20 is shown with its doors open, ILIDS extended in ready position, and the start of the combat payload. The combat payload has extra fuel for the fighter and 6 space-rated AIM-120D Slammer missiles. Now if Microsoft would only add animation support to XNA, I could use TS to animate the doors and docking system...

I've had TS since version 5 but learning to use it has been tough due to limited time. Nice to see that I'm slowly improving my 3D modeling skills. |

Another picture, this one in game. I had to change the textures so everything would show up.

Finally got to update the Tigershark this weekend. Here is a closeup of the textured docking port. Part of the fun is figuring how how to use Photoshop to do the textures.

Bro, nice model but I believe you are a bit late with the name "F20 Tigershark". There actually was a plane called the F20 Tigershark. The F20 was a prototype made by Northrop sometime in the 70's I believe. The F20 was a variant of the venerable F5, and was to be a competitor for the F16 but the Air Force wanted new technology. This was unfortunate because the F20 had the capalbility of going from turning on the power, to lift off in one minute versus twenty minutes for the F16, it was just as manuverable, just as fast and just as deadly. I just jumped into this thread and have not read it completly, so if someone has already posted this poop,:o Doh! Good scenery, more please. |

hm... I guess I need a new name then if that's going to be confusing (though it is a game in an alternate universe) F-19 Saber mabye. It's supposed to be a top secret fighter spaceplane in answer to the MiG 105. |
