Hello Folks

Sorry for the delay in getting another animators club together. I will be holding it this Saturday, August 23, at 12 pm pst / 3 pm est / 8 pm uk time. It will be held in the scriptorium. You can get there by following the links on this page:

http://www.caligari.com/BirdsOfAFeather.asp?SubCate=S2BOAF

We will be covering creating walk cycles with an ik rigged character. I will do a short demo step by step and explain the poses. I noticed there has been some discussion on the forum on this topic, so I hope it will be useful. Anyone else with knowledge of this area is welcome to make a presentation as well.

Hope to see ya there.

Thanks

A quick outline / summary of last night's animators online collaboration meeting.

Many thanks to 3DFrog and all involved. Learned some more and had a laugh doing it too.

The posted pic shows a couple of rigged characters we brought along. Wizard also brought along his new Walkatron 3000 walk cycle aid/jig (out of shot). Paul brought along a childrens playground roundabout model which we keyframed in realtime collaboration mode. Trying to KF a walkcycle with a model ON the turning roundabout proved to be a sure way to get seasick DOH.

Ok the summary for creating a walk cycle. Rough copy and paste of (hopefully) the useful bits.

------------------------

There are basically 3 main poses for a walk, the first is contact pose

Most people use ik for legs and fk for arms, but not a rule.

The other poses are one in between the first contact pose and the passing pose, that is where all your weight is down and it is where character is lowest

pose 1 ....Contact

pose two ..Between contact and passing all weight at lowest point

pose3 ......Passing one leg almost straight, other leg up in air passing it

pose 4......Where character is at his highest almost as if he will fall over leaning

pose 5 ....Contact again, where he catches himself, the second time you make your contact pose it is reverse of your first one

But to start out for beginners just go with contact passing contact passing contact. Then when you feel comfortable you can make the poses more extreme by varying things and make it sneaky or sad or happy

Referring to Wizard's new walk cycle aid......

Using the Walkatron 3000 there is no need to go into the FCurve editor

The walking jig has linear interpolation so runs at a constant speed - just matching the feet does the trick, its always nice when you dont have to adjust curves, it just saves a bit of running around between editing tabs. I do use the Story and DopeSheet tabs though (Wizard).
