I made a nice 3D cloud using SSS on a quick model, tweaked the settings some and used Global Illumination as well as depth of field. Another method I tried involved putting "fur" on the object, but that was too render intesive. The image is attached for those who are wondering how it turned out. I feel this could be extended into cloud shapes, you know where you see a cloud and it looks like something. If anyone finds other methods please do share as at the moment I'm not entirely satisfied with what I came up with. |

PyroCluster http://pyrocluster.com/introduction.htm was (and still is) a great plugin for older trueSpace version. Great clouds and effects.
It may be difficult to obtain though, and is not fully compatible with newer tS versions. |

I used spheres booleaned together and then subdivided for my Little Cloud project but I did want a distinctive look rather than trying to recreate an actual cloud. I then copied the cloud in PS offset each layer (about 5 layers) and blurred each then changed the opacity. Tedious I guess but it was not about speed...;) |

You can use a lot of spheres with transparency shader but it is long to render. |

If i remember, the mountains was made with Bryce. Because i need this image for a movie in Truespace. i do a background with the image and i do the clouds with simple spheres (more than 100) with texturs and transparency shader. You don't need plugins but it is very long to do. |

Another idea: if you want to move the clouds, create an animated texturs for the bump and move and rotate (slow) the spheres. It is longer to do than a plugins but you can do exactly what you want. I prefer quality than win time. |

All of these are greate ideas! I'm not particularly concerned with render time, I was just wondering if anyone had found a particularly effecient method. I was considering pyrocluster but if I recall correctly it doesn't work with Vray. I think the main problem is the fuzziness or like thin whispy clouds. I think SSS helps to capture the coloring well without having to mess with lighting too much. I could always use alpha mapped planes with some displacement for more distant clouds I guess. If the camera is above the clouds it's not much of a problem since way up high the clouds do tend to have more defined edges. Thanks for the suggestions though! |

Here is how i made the exaust cloud..
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=69558&postcount=231
A png texture with alpha..
Even you could create your own cloud textures.. Go outside, try to find one of those clouds with a blue sky behind and take a picture..
Use photopaint or any picture editor and using keying or croma erase the blue of your picture and there you have.. a simple and effective way to make your own cloud textures... For free and in High res :)
Hope that helps! |

Thanks Prodigy! That image of yours on the other thread is amazing! Your idea is really a good one, I was thinking about it, but you brought it to a whole other level! |

Just found this, rather interesting http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials_3/jussing_clouds/creating_clouds_3dsmax01.asp
Could probably do something like that with trueParticles and alpha mapped planes. |
