Howdy y'all

I hope everyone had a safe and satisfying New Year celebration! I know I did :D

Seeing as my new computer is much more comfortable with hi-poly counts I've been playing with making stone walls using real geometry rather than bump maps alone. I wanted to capture the finer nuances of shadows on a rough stone wall. My experiments have mutated into this project.

I've rendered the same scene with minor variations under different lighting setups as shown in the montage: Top left is sunrise, top right is late morning.

Bottom left is moonlit early evening and bottom right is starlight.

The bigger image represents sunset.

It's all my own modelling and uses tS 6.6, the GIMP and Makehuman for the fat guard character.

I'm looking for any suggestions, critiques or remarks as to how I might improve the scene and which time of day works best - I quite like my torchlit variations for the play of shadows on the wall but I'd love to know what other folk think.

Thanks in advance :)

I think this image looks very good. My one comment is the light glow around the flame on the right is alittle strong and could be a gradient that goes to transparent further from the flame as now it just sort of cuts off and is quite bright.

I like how you handled the lighting. My eye caught two things that don't look right. The chain looks too small (needs bigger links) and the bosoms looks too big! (first time I've ever complained about that!!!)
The rock work looks great!

Humbled as always by the work I see in this forum. I really like the image, but I agree the guard may have a bit much on the chest :-)

Hi Stephen,

Another great image. The torchlight version is the best IMHO. I think the others have covered the couple of little improvements that could be made so I'll just say happy new year mate!

zomg...he has moobs....:D

other than that...nice job!!

"Moobs"?! Is that short for 'man boobs'? I deliberately gave him 'man breasts' because I wanted him to look really big. One third of all westerners (and one half of all Texans) are either overweight or obese but that's no reason not to include bigger people in our art.

I used to work with a guy with 'moobs' like these - one of his party tricks was to grab his breast and wobble it at other folk. Not the most attractive habit!

Anyway, glad you liked the rest of the picture. :D

Woah what sort of parties did you go to?!! ;)

Anyway I like the image and choice of character. I think we should have great variety in characters, not just the 3D special of the impossible thin waisted, large chested femal. I think Shrek proves that characters of all sorts are appealing and interesting!

So, moob away!

Thanks!

Tom

Chuckle! Any party I could scrounge an invite too! I think the best way to spend your youth is to miss-spend it!! (Within reason of course!)

Thanks Tom - That was sort of the point I had in mind really. True beauty is always on the inside IMHO. Additionally, anyone who thinks that only skinny waisted, big breasted women are sexy has obviously never seen large Samoan women dancing - Whew!

My tubby guard character was inspired by a story I read recently that mentioned eunuchs and how often they became really large after their ...er ..operation.

Oh and by the way, thanks to Revan5743 for introducing me to a great new word! Though it can be a tricky one to use in everyday conversation!!!;) ;)
