Hi Guys,
Well with a new year comes a new project and a new challenge....
There has been some excellent head modelling in the forums over the last couple of months (Chrisj and shrike to name but two) and it has inspired me to try my hand at a portrait. I've modelled lots of heads before but I've never tried to make them look like anyone in particular so I thought I'd have a go.
The trouble is that after a while you tend to lose your objectiveness and start to doubt if your model really looks like who its meant to be....
So the question is who is it?????
The clues are its a male (obviously ;) ) and is a top US film star.
The first image is a standard, generic male head that I used as a starting point and then pushed, prodded, dragged and edited the mesh into the head you see in the second image along with a player view of the mesh.
This is pretty much the finished mesh before adding clothes and textures but like I said I could be way out...
So please, any comments and crits are most welcome.
ATB & a happy new year

With that thread title I got all excited thinking it'd be Judy Garland related, then you said male so I assumed it'd be James Mason as he was the other star of the film of that name and then you go and stick pictures of Mace Windu in there to really confuse me!
Excellent job so far Mr Mouse. |

Ha! I didn't read the whole post to start with and only scrolled down to the first head and thought 'oh no, I don't recognise it' but then went back and finished reading, saw the second picture... doh!
Was then instantly relieved - blatantly SLJ. You've captured him really clearly - really looking forward to seeing what you do with the textures on this - assuming you're going for realism? Could have some fun though...! |

Well for the longest time I thought it was Judy Garland....
But you all convinced me Samuel Jackson and Mace Windu are the same person!
So I'll go with option 4... "good ol what's his face" |

It's motherf***king Samuel L Jackson on a motherf***king (3D) plane!!!
Steve you've captured him brilliantly - once again your attention to detail is nothing short of astounding IMHO. Your work always leaves me feeling like a fumbling amateur - wait! I AM a fumbling amateur!
The force is strong in you, young Madmouse! :D

Good likeness. I knew who it was right away. Good subject to model as a first try, as his features are all very strong, and there's plenty of reference materail available. Keep it up. Must go back to my Charlize model, and finish it sometime. |

Hmmmmm!
Must admit that I'm a little disappointed :(
Its actually meant to be Tom Cruise ;)
Well if everyone thinks it looks like Samuel L Jackson then I guess I'll say that's who it meant to be :D
Thanks for the comments Guys:-

An award winning, competition beating, cover artist kind of fumbling amateur ;)
By the way, where'd you get the generic head model?
It started as a poser 4 male head and then I seriously reworked the mesh to make it more adaptable for other models. If you want it let me know and I'll upload it.
Well here's a quick update on the clothes. It will be SLJ as mace windu BTW but if I like the skin textures enough I might try a pulp fiction version to (anyone know a good afro modelling tutorial ;) )
Thanks again ATB

I made this Roman Bump Map in May 06. Had actually applied the Roman face texture map to a poser model, but can't find it now. |

I would very much like it. I've wanted to model a whole mess of people but always get annoyed after about the eyes and never finish. It'd be a relief to just edit a decent existing head model. I'd really appreciate that, thanks!

No problem mate. it's a little rough in places but is is only meant to be a starting point...enjoy.
Really good work here mouse. Are you using ts for modeling? Usually I pretty much only every use TS for my work. But just recently I've discovered Silo (which if you don't know is a modelling program) It does a similar jobs to TS point edit with some very nice extra bells and whistles but it just does it Soooooooo much better. (Sorry Caligari but you cant argue with the truth :( ) TS will always be my primary tool but Silo is a great addition to anyone's box of tricks. |

Another Quick update on the clothes.
The textures are very rough and there just to separate the layers better. I'm not sure that I'm entirely happy with the look of the clothes so any comments are most welcome. I'm toying with the idea of losing the clothes and just doing a tight close up on the head?
Any ideas?

FWIW I favour keeping the clothing. It instantly identifies him as Mace Windoo, who is a totally bald character, rather than a model of Samuel done by someone who doesn't know how to do 3d hair!! (Of course we all know you CAN do 3d hair - who could forget your Woad Warrior and his whiskers?);)
Interestingly I've been having a bit of a run with Samuel lately - last weekend I watched the hilarious 'Formula 51' and this weekend had a Star Wars festival on local TV, all the films except the most recent one. As a New Zealander I never get tired of watching the scene where Mace Windoo decapitated Jango Fett as Jango is played by New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison who got his start in early NZ soap operas. There is something that stirs the heart of all true New Zealanders in the fact that somewhare far, far away is a whole galaxy full of Temuera Morrison clones! It's a bit like finding a whole hidden planet full of Ken Barlows! (Ken Barlow has been a character on Britains longest running soap, 'Coronation Street' for so long he must have set world records for TV longevity!).
Getting back on topic, have you considered modelling Maces hands holding his light sabre up by his head? Just a thought.... |

Very nice MM. Sam Jackson was my first thought. I knew there was something else than truespace in the game to alter the model. I just started to use silo myself a few weeks ago, no regret. Great modeler. Keep the clothes. |

Yep, I wasnt planning on doing hands but I'm thinking about having his light sabre in the edge of the shot casting a nice purple glow on his face
